Warning: Simon Says Stamp MISTI Grid Transparency Overlay

I purchased one of these, and it's great for getting everything lined up perfectly, however....

If you use the wrong side, the grid wipes off. There is nothing on the package, the website, or the transparency itself to indicate this. I've emailed them, but in case anyone was considering it, I thought I'd give a warning. All I used was a wet absorber - no chemicals.

That happens with all printed plastic - unless you laminate it or otherwise seal it. I use those clear quilting guides and the same thing happens - the pink grid comes off - I just write with a sharpie on the non-printed side to remind me not to rub the printed side.

I've never used printed plastic, so I had no way of knowing. A simple disclaimer on the package with a little mark on the grid is all they need to warn people.

Oh wow, I've used the pink grided plastic quilting guides ever since I got my MISTI and I have never had it wipe off. If I'm using Archival ink I always clean the plastic guide with alcohol too..But I will say before I got those MySweetPetunia had a link to download a grid you could print out on your transparency and that for sure wiped off.

I'm using the pink quilting grid for about an year and it's finally starting to wear away. I don't pay attention to which side I'm using I just know it's fading away.

It's easy to find a grid online, normally a free resource for teachers etc. and can be used by anyone. Just use printable inkjet acetate and make sure you print on the rough side so that the ink absorbs. x

As Crafty Pixie says, there are many online. I LOVE this site:INCOMPETECH.
They have all sorts of graph paper, in a huge amount of sizes & shapes. Also journal pages, ledger pages, manuscript sheets, all free download/printables. Used it many times, it's a safe site.

I never followed up with this. SSS offered to replace mine, even though they implied that I must have used the wrong chemical on it to clean it. I only ever wiped it with water, but I thought it was nice of them to at least offer to replace it. I never took them up on it, because i didn't follow through, and I'm still using my smudged one.

Very nice of them! You can also use the free download from MSP and print your own. I prefer to buy them because the cutting is more accurate than I tend to do but it's a great option.

Just something that came to mind this morning. I use transparencies in a class that I teach and use the color laser printer at church for printing. One set of 5 transparencies is used to fill in boxes in tables with a fine point sharpie. I have to use alcohol to clean and after four or five uses, the printed lines are starting to fade. My home inkjet printer would never have lasted like that. That ink bleeds with water.

Maybe if one prints the grids with the laser printer...on transparency film meant for the laser printer...there would be better results?

I had mine laser printed onto transparencies at an office supply store. I did label them with a sharpie so I would always use them printed side down. I cut them into three different card front sizes from the sides to preserve the center cross grid. That way I can lay one on a 4.25 X 5.5 card front for instance and center and line up a stamp in my positioner. I'm not finding that I get any ink on mine using them that way.

I would suggest what Lydia said-laminate.

You can get clear, single sided self adhesive laminating sheets pretty cheap now. Just cut to size and apply on the vulnerable side. You dont need a machine to do it. I have been using this forever-heck I am old enough that when I was in my teens and 20s we had to provide paper/hardcopy ID stuff so I laminated all of it. Working papers, SS cards, a birth cert, etc. It's peel and stick. Easy peasy.

I'm going to use to make bookmarks with it now.
