TOUR HISTORY "Great moments in the history of the Tour
The line between insanity and genius is said to be a fine one, and in early 20thcentury France, anyone envisaging a near-2,500-km-long cycle race across the country would have been widely viewed as unhinged. But that didnt stop Go Lefvre, a journalist with LAuto magazine at the time, from proceeding with his inspired plan. His editor, Henri Desgrange, was bold enough to believe in the idea and to throw his backing behind the Tour de France. And so it was that, on 1 July 1903, sixty pioneers set out on their bicycles from Montgeron. After six mammoth stages (Nantes - Paris, 471 km!), only 21 routiers, led by Maurice Garin, arrived at the end of this first epic.
Having provoked a mixture of astonishment and admiration, le Tour soon won over the sporting public and the roadside crowds swelled. The French people took to their hearts this unusual event which placed their towns, their countryside and, since 1910, even their mountains, in the spotlight..."

The YELLOW - "... the Yellow Jersey worn by the best rider in the general ranking."
The GREEN- "The green jersey was created in 1953 for the 50th anniversary of the race. It brought a new interest to the race, the yellow jersey not being the only jersey at stake any longer. The first green jersey in history was held by Swiss Fritz Schaer. It is worn by the leader of the points classification."
The Red Polka Dot - "The King of the Mountains classification was created in 1933 for the best climbers (first winner: Spain’s Vicente Trueba). But the polka-dot jersey only appeared in 1975..."
The White - "It was created in 1975. In 1988, the jersey was abandoned, but not the best young rider classification. The white jersey was reintroduced in the peloton in 2000. It rewards the best-placed under-25 rider in the overall standings..."

Fabulous challenges, Lela! You come up with such great ones! Don't know how you do it.
BTW we were in Paris when they came through on the Tour de France, over 25 years ago! We were in the bleachers on the Champs-lyses, before they went through and it was so hot that we went back to the hotel and actually watched on tv in French! LOL

You were there?! That's AWESOME!
This really wasn't the VSBN I had planned for this month actually, LOL, but yesterday I saw the start and it got me interested ... so I started looking into it and thought it would be a fun theme, with a little history thrown in for interest ....
It's why I put it ends 07/23 ... cuz that's when the TOUR actually ends ... ;)

Lela, another awesome challenge. I've just said to my hubby that I don't know how you ladies think up these themes. My hubby is a big fan of the Tour...in fact any sport...LOL. I will give it a go.
I did create a double page LO yesterday but still need to finish it and used a sketch from last month. I will see if I can work something into it to make one of these challenges stick...
Thanks for this and looking forward to seeing everyone's LO's. Happy 4th July.

Here's my LO for stage 1. I chose Stashbusters from July 2014 and used the following:
Page map sketch...p57
Patterned papers and bazzil out of stash and had them for several years
Rickrack....made using paper and wavy scissors..unfortunately you can't see much of it but there is a strip on there
Bakers twine
1 eyelet
I also used a stencil and paste I've only had for a few months but I'm sure when the cyclists ride, they have something new with them...my excuse...and I had to get it on the LO somewhere..my new thing..LOL ;)

Hi everyone, here's my LO for stage 4. I chose challenge 2 - Fan Favourite. There were so many beautiful pages to choose from but I had the soccer photos sitting on my table and wasn't going to scrap them, until I spotted a lovely LO by Joyce Ann and thought it could somehow work with my photos. Unfortunately it didn't come out as well as the original but it's the best I could manage after a frustrating hour or 2......you will know what I mean when you read my description. I sometimes wonder why I make things harder for myself...LOL
It will be added to our boy's album and hubby says he will love it.

Lela originally specified that the challenges ended on July 23 when the Tour de France ended, but since there are no prizes, you can probably still work on and post challenge entries until the end of the month.

Thanks Cheryl, I will keep going. Happy day

Here's my LO for VSBN challenge Stage5 & 6......I'm double dipping even though for Stage 5 I didn't use one of the phrases, but this LO is about an awesome feeling and day our youngest son had when going to watch his beloved LFC play a game whilst visiting the UK many years ago Maybe I can get away with this...LOL.
I think it will qualify, however, for Stage 6...either a page on sport, or WIN
W: White background & chipboard
I: Inks and inspiration
N: I'm sure I've gone over 9 items, but there's the tape on there that looks like netting
I'm also submitting this LO for other challenges.
TFL. Happy day
