Default New 110 lb paper at Michaels

For those that like to use Recollections 110 lb cardstock for card bases, they are now carrying several mixtures of colors. I bought Coffe and Cream, which has creams, brown and black, and a rose one with creams and soft pinks. I know they also had a blue mixture and primary color mixture.

I like having the option of using different colors for cards. Also, the cream in the mixtures is a real ivory color, not the manilla color of their new cream 110 lb cardstock.

Shoot, I just went to Walmart and bought some white 110 lb paper made by Georgia Pacific. But I will check out the colors at Michaels.

I bought the 110lb cardstock in white, black and kraft a few weeks ago. Love how sturdy they are....perfect for the pots of gold treat boxes I made for St. Patty's day. Glad to know they are carrying more colors in that weight. Thanks for the heads up.

I saw that last night and picked up the assortment with the greys. It's on sale this week for 40% off, but I got a coupon in my email today for an additional 15% off total purchase good this afternoon/evening, so I am heading back. There's an assortment called Rose Gold (I think) that almost made me weep for joy.

I was at Hobby Lobby earlier and noticed they have a "heavy" card stock. Unfortunately, it didn't provide any weight info on the package. Does anyone know how heavy it really is? And have you tried stamping or coloring on it?

4 colors of blues, 4 shades of reds, 4 primary colors, 4 shades of grey. A package called Ocean with aqua and maybe tans. The package with cream and pale pink has those 2 colors and is named something sweet (wedding or baby theme). $14.99 per pack of 100.
I have not bought any yet, but the pink & cream is really nice.

That's at Michaels. I think the pink & cream is Rose Gold.
I bought HL heavy white, but have not opened it yet. I think it's not 100 or 110 lb.

Thanks for the heads up. I have the white but want the black for sure of the 110 lb. I am in Canada. Not sure if we have all of the colors you mentioned. But if not, I do go to the States so can get it from a Michaels there.

I discovered this heavyweight cardstock a year or so ago now it is about all I buy. Its some of the heaviest I have found. I always buy 10 packages when it goes on sale for 50% off. It is awesome you will love the quality!

I don't think the Hobby Lobby is quite as sturdy as the Michael's 110 lb (just based on how it feels to me), BUT it makes a very nice sturdy card base and to me, the white of the Hobby Lobby is whiter than that of the Michael's. It stamps nicely, but I haven't tried coloring on it yet.

Thanks for the heads up, ladies! I stopped by last night at michaels and bought some of their new heavy colored card stock. Also, I bought a pack of white as the batch they have now is not the Grey blue tone from before.

They do! I saw them yesterday in a Michaels in Mississauga On and without incriminating myself they may or may not be in my craft room:shock::cool:

I haven't seen them yet so I wonder when they will get them here in Calgary. I just got the Hampton Art stamp positioner thingy a little while ago with the 55% off coupon they had. I'll have to wait for a good coupon again to get the paper (not that I need anymore paper - I'm going to have to reinforce my floor joists soon). The packages are either 19.99 or 20.99 here-can't remember which.

I've loved the white, black and cream 110 lb. paper and will definitely have to check out the colored cardstock. Thanks for the news.

Teresanoh, Thank you so much for the info! i got one of each color at my Michaels, (8 packs). I think it just makes the card when the base is made of heavier cardstock. I have enough for a few years now! Yay!!!!

I'm glad my post was useful. I just saw the pack of mixed grays at my Michaels and that will be my next purchase. They will be great for masculine cards, sympathy cards, wedding cards with some pink and cream, and I was enjoying making gray and red cards for Christmas this year. I agree, a sturdy card base really helps make the card.

Cat Woman - I saw the new cardstock colours in Edmonton today. Very pretty and I had a 50% off coupon but there was already a 30% sale on them, so will wait for another time. Regular price was $22.99 CAD

I'm a big fan of Michael's 110 paper and thanks for the information on the new color combos. I think the Hobby Lobby paper had 100 lb that I saw the other day.

Love that I can use my 40% coupons on these.

I took my 50% off coupon today only to get some of the 110 lb. They were already on sale though for 30% off. I used the 50% on a stamp set. I was thrilled to get 4 colors in one pack: black, cream, gray and brown. I was thinking I was going to get a large pack of just black and I would never work through it all. This purchase was perfect.

I stopped at Michaels in Airdrie yesterday and saw them there. Didn't get any because, yes, they were $22.99 with 30% off. I guess if i had to order paper online, this wouldn't be considered a bad price, but the price on paper has jumped so dramatically at Michaels, I'm relunctant to give over my money when I already have soooooo much that is going unused. But I do like the fact that they have them in different colours now. I could branch out and do something other than a white card base now (if I ever got that brave )

I know, I hestitated buying them at only 30 % off, and probably normally I would wait. But I just decided to go for it. And I was able to use my 50% off for a new Hero Arts layering bird set I saw that they had.

I have always been about trying to save money, but right now, it was just not worth it to wait. I am glad I got the c.s. because I already made a card on Sunday and was able to use the brown in the package of 110 lb. It seems to me like it is becoming a waste of my precious time, to wait for a 50% off and then tear over to Michaels and find I can't use it. I was not willing to wait for whenever the circumstance presented itself. I wanted to have the c.s. ready to use. And I am glad that I did.

For those that purchased these, were your packages made in China? I bought several. I used a couple of sheets from the pinks and it cracks when folding. I scored with my Martha Stewart board and, on another sheet, used the scoring blade of my SU trimmer. It still cracked but was less noticeable than on the sheet scored on the MS board.

I like the colors but this is not good news for cardbases.

What have your experiences been?
I haven't tried my newest colors, but when I use the really heavyweight cardstock - be it Michael's, Hobby Lobby's or Gina K's base weight, it is definitely more likely to crack when folding. Gina K had a video back in the day about scoring hers - you need to go over the score line with the scoring tool more than once, and with more pressure than you use for lighter cardstock. I usually use an embossing stylus instead of the tool with my Martha Stewart board; if I score with my Scor-Pal, that tool seems to work ok. Also, make sure that the "dent" you make when scoring is on the outside of the card, be a little gentle when you fold it, and then go over the fold with a bone folder.

That whole procedure sounds unnecessarily complicated, but it doesn't take much more time than scoring once and folding, and the card feels so much more substantial with the heavier base.

Thanks for replying, Cheryl.

Other than using a stylus with the MS board, I did everything you mentioned. I am used to using heavyweight cardstock (usually Cougar 100#).

I plan to re-check my white and ivory ... but those are older USA-made packs. There might be one from China. I will also check another pack of colors. I haven't used any of the 110# from China for bases before.

I cut, scored and pre-folded some of each of the new colors from the Coffee and Cream and Roses packs and didn't have any trouble with them cracking.

I use the large Martha Stewart scoring board with a different bone folder than the one included with the board. I also put a piece of scrap paper over the card bases when using the bone folder to flatten the card bases to avoid getting a shiny line.

I wonder if humidity/dryness in the air would have any effect on this?

All of Michael's "heavyweight" is now made in China since last year. Here in Arizona where I am wintering the price of that paper is $ 16.99 so with discount a good buy if you like it. I used to buy the 110 originally made in Texas and now wish I had stocked up had I known they were going cheaper, more grey and not as thick as original.

as well, our tombow refills in Canada at Michaels are $17.99 for package of three. In AZ the regular price of these is $9.99 with 40 or 50% off a definite saving so I load up here on that item.

I have a ScorPal scoring board and a small Martha one. The 'bone folder' that came with Martha's is WAY to sharp. I have had it actually cut the cardstock when I was scoring it. I don't use that tool for anything now. The ScorPal bone folder works with Martha' board.
Yes, it makes a big difference when you score into the 'right' side of your card base then fold it the other way. I still have some problems with textured cardstock breaking at the fold, so I hardly ever use it for a base, just panels.
On another note, I sure hope that the China factory has figured out how to cut a real square corner. The USA pack I'm still working from is not cut on the square. I often have corners that are not perfect when the card is folded after scoring (like SU MFT and PTI always are perfect.

Didn't have a chance to play (was organizing a bit instead for a play date later this week!) but I appreciate the comments and feedback. I will try again, being sure to score several times using a stylus and to fold correctly then burnish well.

My hope is it was user fatigue and I didn't actually do all the steps I normally do.

Me too. I bought that the other day; and, when I was in there today, I bought the Rose Petals.

Had a play date with my BFF and scored 2 sheets each of white USA-made white and China-made rose petals (the color that makes up about half the pack).

One sheet of each color was scored 4x (down and up twice) using the scoring blade and SU trimmer. The white came out great but the rose was cracked. Each was folded with the bump (or mountain) on the inside and burnished with a bone folder and copy paper.

One sheet of each color was scored using the large MS board and the tool it came with. I placed the cardstock a smidge below the top so the tool wouldn't "poke" the cs and ran it down using the side (vs the point) 4x top to bottom. This time the rose came out nicely but the SU was cracked. Both were folded and burnishdd as the white.

I'd still like to hear what results other people get.

Tina, on the way home, I stopped at a Michael's and bought the Rose Petals pack. Now I have the Ocean, Coffee and Cream, and Rose Petals. As we saw today at your house, they score really well with the MS scoring boards and tools. BTW, I had lots of fun today! Thank you for your hospitality.

Jeanette ... I'm glad you had fun too. I think the next pack I will get will be the one with brighter pinks (I consider the Rose petals to be "blush" pinks).

I'm happy that these beautiful colors for sturdy cardbases can be successfully scored with something I already own.

Shopped at Michael's today and bought a pack of the Rose Petals and a pack of the Ocean. It was hard to decide which colors to get. I had a 50% off coupon, but couldn't use it since the card stock was already 30% off .... but I wasn't surprised since I have a feeling that Michael's is seeing lots of papercrafters coming in to check out these new colors of their 110 lb card stock.

Just wanted to share that the darkest color in the Ocean pack works well with Memento Luxe Teal Zeal.

Has anyone else found ink matches for other colors.

The darkest color in the Ocean pack is the color that really appealed to me the most, but I don't have the Momento Luxe color you mentioned .... thanks for telling us about how well it matches!

I went off to Michael's yesterday with coupons in hand, not even sure if they had any yet. Lo and behold they had Rose Petals, Pink, Grey, Red , and Blue. And they were on sale...buy bone get one free. I couldn't believe it. My Michael's didn't have any Coffee and cream, maybe another time. I was certainly excited with all my goodies.

They were B1G1 free today, but I really don't have room for any more paper.
