I went through a MAJOR HOARDING phase of chipboard years ago - the bare kind that you paint and embellishment. I easily have two huge storage tubs of it that I moved into storage. I don't know what to do with it! Do you have any ideas on what to use it for? I don't really see it used on cards anymore. I used to scrapbook and would use it for pages, but now it seems like so much work when you can buy things like Thickers in different colors, fonts, and materials. I have alphabets, shapes, and so on. I tried donating it to my friend who is a grade school teacher and she didn't want it, lol. Do you have any suggestions on how to use it, where to donate it, or if you personally are interested in any - I will gladly put together boxes and fill them to the top if you'd just be willing to pay for shipping. Any ideas would be much appreciated!!!

do you have a church youth group or local after school program? I still use mine on cards all the time...paint with Gesso and then ink/paint/emboss on it..
I used to use chipboard shapes and letters/numbers in scrapbooks, but probably haven't touched any of my stash in 4 years - I think mine's going in the recycle bin!
Some thrift stores are non profits benefiting a charity. Some shelters accept arts and craft materials for chldren. And sometimes googling "where to donate art craft supplies" will do the trick.
I would be using it....if I could figure out how! I don't 'paint' so I looked at applying paper, but couldn't find clear instructions. I would use it to die cut and put on cards, just because it's thick. I've got some Tim Holtz stuff that's flexible, and don't have any ideas for it, either.
I don't know what Thickers are.
OMG - yes, yes, yes but not on cards. It's amazing for mixed media. One of my favorite companies is Dusty Attic. They have a ton of samples to give you ideas.

I put some on banners. I made one for my daughter's baby shower and painted the letters that spelled her name. Everyone loved it! I would be interested in some depending on what it is as I have to make another banner.

Ah...so sorry. I think with some things they just don't speak to us. I despise sequins and will never be able to use them to my satisfaction. ;)
My daughter-in-law and I made some Post-It note holders for her co-workers at Christmas. We used chipboard sheets, covered in patterned paper, for the base of each holder.
I still use it. usually paint it or ink and wet emboss it. When I discovered I could also dry emboss it in my Big Shot a few years ago, I started using it even more. It takes Distress embossing powder for rusty, grungy looks well.
Harvestmoon - The way to get paper on it is to run the chipboard through a Xyron and then apply the paper to it. If you run the paper through the Xyron, I find that it often rips when you try to pull it up. It's also much harder to place sticky DP onto chipboard without creating air bubbles or creases than it is to place DP onto sticky chipboard.
I have been able to cover chipboard with very thin wrapping paper this way and then die cut it.
It's also possible to brush a gel medium on it and put the DP on top, but since the medium is water based, it can distort the paper. The Xyron adhesive doesn't. But for small pieces the gel medium will usually work fine.

I have a bunch of it. I have made my own mini-albums with it. However those Dusty Attic lay outs are amazing! It would be fun to use on some cool scrapbook pages. I'd like to see more tutorials on how to use chipboard creatively!
I've been able to use up some of my chipboard pieces as "dimensionals" - adhesive on both sides and put below piece instead of foam to raise up parts on a card. Will also be using as picture frame, back, and embellishments for group craft project coming up soon.
I cut a bunch of it up to make dividers for my boxes of dies, unmounted stamps, and stencils. It is nice and sturdy so makes it easier to find what I'm looking for. I've labelled them with my label maker, using rough subjects like flowers, snowflakes, stars, sentiments, etc.

a xyron machine is a good way to put dsp on chipboard. then I will use those pieces in my sizzix , cuttle bug, or spellbinders machine and it works very well. I also like to use chipboard boxes to make albums. I like to use chipboard for 3d projects. for multi media projects, it makes for good layering. I save most of the boxes that I empty from the kitchen and can use it in my crafting for something. glue layers together and then die cut for beautiful ornaments. even layering for sturdy jewelry pieces. and like everyone has already suggested, if you're not using designer paper, then gesso and paint or color it however you wish. I love my stash of chipboard and add to it frequently. hehehe hugs, patty

I have made little stand up picture frames or just decorated with a Bible verse. The chipboard is cut into 4" squares, cover both sides with coordinating DSP, round the corners, sand the edges lightly, punch two little holes on inside edges and then use twine to tie together so pieces will stand up. I will stamp a verse and put it on one side and some embellishments on the other side. Or I have used a verse and a picture along with some smaller embellishments. Sorry I don't have one made right now to send a pix with.
I have made them with my 8 year old grandson and other non-crafty friends. They make a nice little gift for someone needing some encouragement with an appropriate verse.

Love chipboard items...use lots of them on cards, layouts and mixed media canvas projects. You can apply most any medium to them, ink, stain, paints, embossing powder, modeling paste, gesso, ...it goes on and on! I purchase from Dusty Attic or finding more in other locations these days. The Tim Holtz pieces I use to die cut shapes that I don't have. Check out uses by searching for Finnabair (Mixed Media Artist from Poland, living in Ireland) She develops Products for Prima Marketing.

I don't know what grade your friend teaches but try a kindergarten especially if you have alphabets, numbers or basic shapes. I promise they will be able to use them. Or just bring them to the school and ask the secretary to put them in the art supplies room and let whomever wants them take them. I can think of a million ways a teacher could use them so I'm sure they can think of even more. If it wasn't for the shipping, I'd offer to take them!
You might also consider cutting other shapes from the larger pieces. Especially if you have some steel rule dies. I love the idea of using them as dimenaionals. I use quite a lot of fun foam so I could repurpose some chipboard that I don't like anymore.
Sadly, when I tried donating high quality and mostly unused art supplies to schools in our area, the response was uniformly no. I even left my name/number for art teachers to call me. I did figure out where/how to donate items so none ended up in the recycling bin or trash, but it took a little sleuthing.
I was surprised, but reasons one person explained made some sense. Apparently people dropped off sets with missing pieces, unsorted items, dirty items, mostly used supplies (like paints), and sometimes just junk tossed in a box. These days there's also the question about someone unknown putting something dangerous in a box. I'm sure it could be different if it's a parent who knows a teacher. Or maybe it depends on where you live. We're in a big metropolitan area. Sorry to be a downer - this was just my experience.
BTW, an LSS near me gathers paper craft supplies for a senior center that has a large arts and crafts department. So nursing homes or senior centers might be another possibility.
Sorting items and putting them into clear plastic bags can work well if donating to non-profit thrift stores. It takes very little time but the people working there may really appreciate it, since they get mountains of unsorted stuff.
i had forgotten about the Gentleman Crafter until I stumbled across a video of his today. He uses chipboard a lot, and not always in a multi-layered mixed media way. He even uses it for cards.
The video I noticed (again) today was how to make a bellyband card out of chipboard but there are lots of others - mini books, frames, etc. Yell if you want to see that one and can't find it.

Do you have full sheets? Or just letters and such? And if you do have full sheets, what size are they, how many do you have and can they be cut? I'm looking for something to use as dividers for my photo boxes.

I'll die cut it to layer under a die cut to raise die cut, card fronts, tags, journal covers/backs...
Thanks for the suggestions. Anyone use cereal boxes to cut out shapes? Wondered how it would work for embellishments. Would think it would be easy to paint!
I use cereal boxes all the time. Though they are not acid free, they can be used for all kinds of applications: templates, mock ups, models, boxes, gift bags, baskets. They work well for embellishments as they can be painted, covered with paper, glued and glittered.
I still use chipboard but I cut the shapes out on my die cutters. I don't have any pre-purchased shapes.
I hope this is ok because I am trendy scrapper but I haven't seen bare chipboard for many years in the industry. Wood veneer is really popular right now. That is the new raw chipboard shapes.
Chipboard pattern embellishments are still popular. You could turn your pieces into cute pattern belli's. Cover them with pattern paper, washi tape, attach banners, use Tim's tiny attacher to add elements, add some enamel dots for example.
I can't remember where I saw it but I saw some cute Fuse chipboard embellishments too.
Using washi tape is such a cute idea - I didn't even think of that. I have some cute doodlbeug washi tape that I could wrap around some pieces... like the chipboard hearts and stars!
I have a friend that uses chipboard (what she gets from cereal boxes) all the time. She uses her dies---flowers, flourishes, leaves, butterflies, you name it---to cut out the shapes. Then uses either the positive or negative side (sometimes both) as a stencil and/or mask. The mask piece is often also used as an embellishment on top of the finished stenciled piece. Wish I had a picture to attach. Sometimes she just die cuts something out of the chip board and attaches it as is. Her trademark colors are Black and Kraft, so no coloring involved!
Ohhhh I love chipboard. I have tons of chipboard shapes and words, and once in a while I will actually use them. Sometimes I paint them, sometimes I cover them with paper, sometimes I'll cover em with glue and spread a thick layer of glitter over that. I've used them on cards, albums, and ornaments. I love em!! :-)
