Hi, welcome to SCS. Lots of different ways and people will have different preferences. I like to sew mine on (with a regular sewing machine) and make the stitching part of the design. Otherwise, you can use things like brads and eyelets or you can stick an embellishment over the top of where your adhesive is (a Prima, ribbon etc). You can get special vellum adhesives but I haven't tried any of those so can't recommend one, sorry.
I don't have a sewing machine but that must be a great solution. I've tried a few vellum adhesives in the past (Wacky Tac is the only one I can remember the name of) and I had very little success I'm afraid to say.
Joanne has given some great ideas above (brads, eyelets and covering adhesive with an embellishment). I've done all of those - but if I don't want to go down that route on a card, I use my Xyron 510 machine. Xyron adhesive is great for vellum as it doesn't show through.
I've tried a few vellum adhesives and have not found any I like. I used my Xyron once, but then the entire piece of vellum was stuck flat against the paper behind it. It wasn't the look I wanted for the card I was working on. The other thing I have done is punch 2 small holes about 1/4" to 1/2" apart in both the vellum and the backing paper, threaded a ribbon through both holes and secured with a bow.

This is an age long question. There is really IMHO no good way to attach without covering it up. I have tried a number of vellum adhesives with no luck. If I use vellum, I usually cover the area where I used it with a flower or photo corner, or other embellishment.
After much trial & error I found that spray adhesive works best for me. Spray the back of the vellum & let it dry for about 10" & then apply. Don't spray too heavy. It will show through.
Ditto the vellum glue dots. I usually cut them into small square pieces before I peel the two layers apart and attach to the vellum. I find this way I don't overuse and waste too much.
Another vote for Glue Dots Brand Adhesives for Vellum.
Shuber - great suggestion for cutting the right size to save $$.
I also have a roll of 3M Tape for Vellum that I got at my LSS, but I only use that when I plan to cover up the obvious mark it shows through the vellum.

I also have no luck with "vellum" adhesives...besides the ideas already given, I have had the best results with Beacon's 3-in-1 Advanced Craft Glue. It is "crystal clear, instant grab, fast dry" and I use it ALL the time, especially for ribbons and other hard-to-glue items. You may still be able to see it a little but it's way better than the so called vellum adhesives. Also, another tip is to put the dot of glue under a word or decoration (like a small star or heart printed on your vellum), it doesn't have to be in the corners KWIM? Finally, similar to the brads idea if you don't want bulk, you can glue a "frame" (ribbon or paper) over the top to hide the adhesive underneath--this could be all the way around or just on the top.

I have tried almost everything and the best no-show adhesive imho is "Glue Dots vellum" The name of them makes it sound like they are individual dots but really they are sheets of microminibabysmalltiny dots that truly do not show through vellum. Magical!
Attached is a picture of the package. Scanner makes the package blue but in real life it's more of a light purple/lavender color. I always buy 2 or 3 packs when I can find it at my LSS.
I've found that the glue dots for vellum do not hold for long. Its like they dry out and are no longer sticky. I've tried several differnt kinds of vellum tapes and they all show through unless I don't press to hard and then it's questionable on how long the tape will hold. I usually put something over the top to cover the tape and I've been having some success with using tiny dots of crystal effects type products but I don't how they will hold over time.
I have used Zig Memory system 2-way glue pen with some success. If you use the small roller ball for a fine line and stick it right away it doesn't show too much. I usually just put a small dot in each corner or the vellum stick it down and rub so that the glue spreads, and is a very thin layer it really does hold and not show a lot. Or I put the glue under part of the stamped design. I just sort of have to play it by ear. I have also used my zyron with a fair amount of sucess if I want the whole piece to lay flat! Just keep playing with your scraps and different glues.

Great suggestions have been given for vellum. Have another idea to contribute that is worthwhile - tried something called Dry Bond which I found pretty good for vellum. I think it came from HSN or QVC - sorry can't remember. Have had it for quite a while and it works for me.

The trick is to apply the tape with it's plasticy paper to the paper you want to attach your vellum to and rub the paper strip with a bone folder until the strip comes off and then place the vellum onto the tape. Try it and see what you think!
I recently used the flowers from the "Together Forever" set. I stamped the image onto the vellum, turned the image over and used the white gel pen to give the flowers a little dimension in the center of the flower. I then put a glue dot on the middle of the flower and attached it to a piece of cardstock for a layered look. It didn't seem to show through!
When I use the 3m vellum tape the other day it showed through, does it make a difference if the vellum is patterned or not?

I get 2 packs of vellum whenever I am low and I cut one pack into strips lengthwise.
then as I need to add sentiments I add the vellum ribbon over a layer and around the layer with the glue on the back.
or
I wrap the whole layer in vellum to get some depth,
to protect fancy cuts or to so I can add loose flowers or confetti. (like a shaker but not *as* shakeable)
or
I use a tiny smidge of mono/snail under each letter or image so that the blotch is just like a distress mark under the inky bit.
but yeah,
mechanical joining
-staples, brads, special folds, photo corners, punched slots ( sewing, as mentioned)
or masking
-paste on a flower or other image or embelishment
or other hidden adhesive
-like my folding stuff to the back as I explained, or frame the vellum like in a slidemount or in a metalrim tag...
are all better than adhesive alone unless you get an applicator system that puts the adhesive all across the whole surface (like xyron)
I find the "messy look" comes from the difference btwn the sticky and non-sticky bits.
(why is all adhesive either snotty looking blots or blocks...?)
if you use the xyron you lose a bit of the translucence but it is something you can design around.
remember to give yourself permission to 'design in' glitter glue swirls behind an image or hot glue channels behind a sentiment or at the edges like stained glass lead.
(I use lots of gold hot glue at christmas!)
depends what you like, of course.

Kimbe, I tried your suggestion and WOW! What a difference. I tried it on both light and dark cardstock and you're right, it works great. And to think that I had pretty much given up on 3M vellum adhesive! It is a cheaper alternative to the glue dots too. Thanks so much!

Do you use the Sew Crafty machine? I haven't tried sewing the vellum, but would like to try now that you've mentioned it. I've thought of buying a Sew Crafty but am not sure if the quality is good.
One of my most successful vellum attachments was on a card that had a layer. The card was Pink, the 5 1/4 x 4 layer was white cardstock. I cut a piece of vellum 5 3/4 x 4, folding down at the 5 1/4 mark. Essentially, I "hung" the vellum by attaching the 1/2 inch piece to the back of the layer. Once the layer was attached to the card, the vellum was free from the layer on the front, but still attached snugly by that bit of folded over vellum that I adhered using whatever adhesive I was using for the card at the time. Obviously, there were no "adhesions" to show thru. My ladies liked it a lot. (Of course I stamped the vellum before attaching it)!
i haven't tried it, but since "crystal effects" is such a great adhesive (found out by accident) and it dries clear, i wonder if that would work? might have to give it a try later, and let you know my results.
Just did some wedding invites and used mono adhesive tape to adhere the vellum announcement to a backing of C/S, I then cut out a butterfly (theme of wedding) and attached above with dimensionals. Looked great and you can't see the adhesive.
The only thing I have found for attaching vellum without it showing is the UHUstic. It is a glue stick that can be found at most craft stores. It rubs on purple but dries clear. There is also one made by Avery. Hope this is helpful.

Try putting the vellum tape on the bottom surface...not on the back of the vellum. I know that works best with Scotch Vellum Tape. Doing it this way allows me to burnish to ensure that the layers do not separate.
The best adhesive I've found for Vellum is called "Vellum Adhesive Runner Invisible BOnd by Therm O Web". It's been a while since I've bought any--good luck!
I'm wondering out loud, but, has anyone tried the idea of attaching blue painter's tape to the vellum BEFORE running it through the xyron machine, so that only the edges of the vellum piece actually gets the adhesive applied? I've noticed too that running the whole piece gets the whole thing stuck, and you sort of lose the free-flow of the vellum piece, but, on the other hand also, I find the xyron adhesive shows the least.
Scotch/3M makes a blue painter's tape for delicate surfaces, supposedly with a low adhesive and works on smooth surfaces.
Of course, the down side is that all that expensive xyron adhesive will be wasted, so there is no win-win situation here.
So if you have blue painter's tape (for delicate surfaces) laying around, it might be worth a try. I will be trying this method for mother's day, but it is a way off project for me. I want to try my hand at dry embossing vellum and attaching that as a card front........
I am trying to adhere wax paper (looks like vellum) to c.s. w. Wacky Tac Vellum Adhesive . Does anyone know if the sheets dry out in time? I have two pkgs. I think I ordered from QVC or HSN. It will not stick when I burnish it on. It is a tree with swirly branches so needs to adhere in teeny tiny places.
I think part/most of the problem might be the waxed paper! If you think about it, it's quite similar to the release sheet that comes with the adhesive, and it's a much more slick and shiny surface than vellum. Last time I used my Wacky Tac, which is at least 6 years old by now, it was still ok so I don't think that's your main problem.
I'm not sure how it would work, but I think I'd try sticking the waxed paper to a self-adhesive sheet before cutting. Those sheets tend to be pretty sticky!
I'm with Sabrina on this one, it's not the adhesive that's the problem, it's the fact that it's wax paper - that stuff is almost impossible to stick! Is there a reason you have to use wax paper? Something like Glossy Accents will do it but it will make the paper pretty much transparent in the areas that have adhesive on them.
