Will vinyl stick to stained wood?

I'm trying to create some signs for xmas presents. I have some Cricut glitter vinyl and some Oracal 651 vinyl. The wood is already stained. I don't want to use a stencil and paint.

Does anyone know if the vinyl will stick to stained wood? Do I need to prep the stained wood before applying the vinyl (like a polyseal)? Do I need to seal after the vinyl is adhered?

From all my reading, acyrlic stains are best used for vinyl, so I've never tried oil based stains. Google the PVPP method using a vinyl stencil and it works great. Paint (stain)/vinyl/paint (mod podge too), then peel the stencil off. Also google the hinge method for the quickest and easiest way to apply the vinyl stencil straight. Stick solely with good vinyl (no Silhoueette or Cricut brand) and you should be fine. Lastly, use Glad Press N Seal as your transfer tape. It is truly a game changer!!! Enjoy!

So, I just went ahead and tried it. I used Oracal 651 directly on the stained wood and it stuck with no problem. I did give it as a xmas present so I hope it holds up over time. I wanted to make several but did not have enough material since I was planning on using the Cricut brand.

I do not recommend the Cricut glitter vinyl. It was easy to weed. However I had a lot of problems getting it to stick to the transfer paper. I ended up carefully pulling the design off the original backing and then applying it to the transfer paper. Even then, it still would not stick to the transfer paper. I used the glitter vinyl on a piece of painted wood and the Cricut strong transfer pulled up the paint after burnishing.

I recommend using the Oracal 651 and glitter vinyl from Expressions Vinyl (see photo). The cost is about the same and the colors are much prettier. It's so easy to use!
