Default MIX191 Burning Leaves

Challenge Title: Burned Paper Bag Leaves
Hostess: MariLynn
Keyword: MIX191
Gallery:MIX191

This week it is my turn to be the hostess. With yesterday being the first day of fall I thought it would be fun to make leaves using burned paper bag technique. I made a video for this technique several years ago. I had all these plans to make a new one to update it with a different twist. Well, I had computer issues so I had to give up on that. If I get a chance later today I will try and put the new video up.
Burned Paper Bag is an old technique. How it was first done was take a brown paper bag, spread glue over the paper and burn the glue over a candle. You can do it that way if you choose, but you can do it by using a heat gun. I made leaves using heat gun and candle and I couldn't tell any difference. I also tried different types of glue. I used Aleene's tacky glue, cheap white glue and gesso. For me the white glue gave me the best texture.
Materials:
glue (school, Aleene's tacky glue, gesso...)
brown paper bag
heat gun or candle
leaf die (or fussy cut with scissors)
black acrylic paint or sharpie marker (black)
metallic rub or metallic acrylic paint
Steps:
1. Spread glue over surface of brown paper bag
2. Heat glue until the glue bubbles and pops. (lots of texture and it loos like leather.
3 make sure glue is dry.
4. die cut leaf shapes. If you don't have a leaf die you could stamp a leaf and fussy cut it out. Or you could freehand draw a leaf and cut it out.
5. Cover leaf with black acrylic paint or color with black sharpie marker. (personal preference for me is the marker because it was less messy)
6. Use metallic rub like inka gold or metallic lustre to bring out the texture. If you don't have metallic rub you can use metallic acrylic paint.

I look forward to seeing what you do with burned paper bag leaves.

Ooooohh, this looks so fun, and I just eked out a few minutes of playtime this morning. Hopefully I can pull something together later after work.

This was fun to try, thank you MariLynn.I'm not sure why the glue didn't bubble for me as much as it does when I do heated pearls. I'm going to go back and look at a couple of my uploads and see what I did differently. Anyway, I was able to rescue a brown bag from the bakery out of the recycling and use part of it that was clean. And I love the way the leaves came out. I tried Aleene's (maybe I was too frugal, LOL), and then I found some white glue and tried that and there wasn't a lot of difference.

This must be a case of "what's old is new again" as I had never heard of the burned paper bag technique. Thanks, Marilynn, for the challenge - it was loads of fun - though it does take some patience to not rush the process . . . . and I got some lovely leathery leaves to show for it. Here is my card:

Sharpies may be less messy but I can't tolerate the smell of the smell of them.
I'm going to try this later today. Thanks for the challenge.

Sorry I am late to the party. This took ages to dry, but I had so much fun making this. Thanks for a terrific challenge MariLynn.
