Default The flip side: What cant you stand?

We talked about what we cant resist....now it's time for the flip side!

Is there a kind of product or technique you cant stand, or just dont like, or it doesnt agree with you...or however you want to put it?

What would you never try to do again?

What would you never buy again?

Let's try not to bash a company per-se, but keep it to a particular product/style/technique

I'll start:
I am not a big mixed media fan myself. I know, it's huge now. Like Hip hop, I recognize it as a legit format, but just not my thing.

I would never make Shabby chic, but I do like some stuff I have seen in it.

Flock does not seem to like me although I like it. My critters look like they have mange. :(

While I would use Dazzles..I avoid stickers. It just consistently looks like I am 4 years old when I try to use them.

Flowers and I don't play well, although I admire them greatly on others' creations. Fancy folds make me twitchy so I don't go there. Loathe StazOn. Where I consistently look toddler-ish is trying to color stamps with markers, lol. Yeah - that's about it...

You ask such interesting questions!

I don't get the flamingo or llama fixation. Or jars. I use mason jars, love them in vintage decor... But not on paper.
Stickers! Ditto what you said!
I have not got on the comic band wagon at all. I admire what others do, but maybe I'm too lazy to layer colour like that. I still like a water filled pen and ink best for colouring.
Oh and the featureless little people. They creep me out!

I'm sure I will come up with more as people post! But that will do for now

You do ask great questions!

I am drawn to people who do the opposite of what I do. So I'm clean & quirky - but what I really like to look at is beautiful vintage, shabby chic etc. - stuff I'm terrible at.

I'm really bad at all that. I also don't like products that have a smell - so strong solvents are never going to be on my craft table. I am completely impaired at 3D projects and fancy folds but I love seeing other people do them.

Well I rarely like what's trendy so here goes..
Shaker cards
Anything with sequins
Big eyed kids and animals
3d paint and puff paint and liquid pearls
Eggshell technique...way too much effort Anything Victorian or frilly
Doilies give me the heebiegeevies

There is more i'm sure but I need to think...

It honestly took me awhile to come up with something, but cover your ears:

I HATE BLENDING STUMPS!

Ok, now I feel better.

Back to what I said in the other post- The pastel Staz-on pads, they're the most horrible pads I ever bought.
The Versamark Dazzle pads- just why?
Colouring- I just cannot get comfy with it, so it stresses me out.
I didn't get the moustache thing at all. Same with the flamingo's.
I admit I will generally avoid the latest fad- I may buy stamps and stuff later when it's waning a bit, to use sometime.
Sequins and buttons.
All those gimmicky cutting knives where the replacement blades cost a weeks rent!

Frilly stuff like gathered tulle, doilies, silk flowers, not big on glitter, not big on stuff I see everywhere like flamingoes, pineapples, birds, owls, tiny houses. For a long time I didn't like banners which have been big for a while but now I love them. So never say never!

I cringe at major hype and trends - sometimes I will follow when they start to die down, but in general I'm not on the bandwagon. I really don't enjoy heat embossing. I'm terrible at foldy projects. I don't understand washi tape. I don't really do Stickles either.

Side note on featureless children... my kids think they look like hippos.

Cool topic! The only thing I dislike in the paper crafting area is anything halloween and demonic in nature like skulls. I don't get the skull thing. Who the heck wants to look at something related to a dead person? Not me! It's just weird. I can tolerate the Jack-o-Lantern images if they aren't demonic. But other than that, I don't like demonic images on my paper crafting projects.

My boyfriend does not like the faceless stuff at all. I have a few of those stamps and I like them. I don't ever show him projects I make with them. And I just received one of the Willow Tree angels as a gift. He made a comment that the girl needs a face. LOL!

I don't know if these are used as much anymore, but I could never stand all the crowns and wings added to stamped images, vintage photos, etc. I am not "deep" enough to get what it was supposed to mean!

Hmm, tough. There's a difference between what I don't like working with vs. what doesn't draw me because it isn't my style.

Shaker cards with the hard plastic holders
Frilly and vintage (though I appreciate others' work)
Faces and people, mostly. Who are these people? I don't know them.

And about mixed media - there's lots of layering and "messy" mixed media happening. But when you use a few mediums together it's mixed media. So we can make clean and simple mixed media. Really! : D

This is a really great topic!

Glitter - I end up wearing most of it and no idea how. Even days/showers afterward, I will find a random piece of glitter in my hair, on my skin, clothes, etc. HOW?????

Eyelets/Brads - I bought so many and never ever use them. Ugh.

People with no mouths - I just don't get it.

I don't like skulls or moustaches or lots of embellishments. I don't like fantasy/arty cards (like you see in magazines). I personally cannot stand to use ribbon because my skills are so lacking. I don't like cutesy images, like girls with big/pinpoint eyes.

I don't like cards or layouts with 3D embellishments. Things that will make your item stick out. It is just impractical. Oh it looks lovely don't get me wrong, but I know I would be frustrated when some one closes the item and it gets crushed. But I also hate plain. I know it looks neat and clean but I like a little chaos.

I hated the chevron craze. Crazes... I usually stand back and watch them come and go.

I am with you with the flocking stuff. It never ever looked good to me and messy as all get out.

(psst I like the whole Halloween thing, and love doilies. I am ambivalent to mixed media)

This is a very interesting topic.

I don't get mustaches - no idea how that became a "thing". (I do like flamingos, but only since moving to Florida, LOL.)

Pineapples, or really, fruit in general. I've seen some nice cards with fruit, but I just can't imagine making one myself.

People stamps. I like to color, especially flowers and cute animals... but I'm totally intimidated by people stamps. And I have to agree that some of them are kind of creepy, LOL.

And... I have to admit that I have a problem with the color green. I've tried, and I do use some greens in limited quantities, but it remains a struggle. I'd be quite happy not to have any green inside my house. (Outside - grass & plants and such - it's fine; just not clothes, or furniture, or decorations... or paper, LOL.)

Coordinating dies for small stamps (ex. Lawn Fawn critters). I can never get them to line up perfectly. I've tried using the magnetic platform and various things to secure them (low-tack tape, post-it tape, even scotch tape) and the darn thing still shifts over slightly and gives me uneven results. It drives me crazy! Especially since I know I would get much more even results if I just used fussy-cutting. And it would be faster, too.

I stopped getting the coordinating dies a while back due to the cost- I'd rather pay for another stamp or more paper. However, I recently used a set that had coordinating dies and hated every second of it. It did not save me any time and it was more of a hassle than anything else. So, I'm glad I stopped buying them.

I may still consider them for super complex stamps, but I'm probably just going to focus on other dies - like MFT's blueprints and STAX.

Glad I'm not alone! I don't get the faceless people. I never liked mustaches or bacon stamps! And while I love the look you get with blending stumps, I hate using them! And dies that just won't cut!

Mustaches and faceless people - will never buy those much less craft with them.

I pretty much love everything (except the above). I will admit that I am terrible at folded projects. I can't tell you how many times I have to do "it" again because I measured wrong, scored wrong, or folded wrong. OY!

What I really dislike is when I buy liquidy things and they go bad/dry up/crack apart before I get back around to playing with them. Things like paint (I have thrown away TONS of little bottles of paint), pots of liquid shimmery stuff (all I'm left with now is a little dry glittery puddle at the bottom), and metallic paste (some actually went moldy and some dried and cracked and are totally unusable).

I love anything foldy, but I do admit to forgetting to measure twice so I only have to cut once!

I am definitely not a modern art type of person. I'm not sure how to describe it well, but those stamps that are collaged images of people/dolls make me cringe. It is just not my style. Stamper's Sampler magazine used to have a lot of artwork like that. Maybe they still do I just haven't look at an issue in years.

Elle-have you tried making a template with the die? You cut the die on a scrap piece, after you draw an outline around the die. (an extra tip I got from Local King rubber). Then you place the template over the image, line it up, tape it to the image piece. Then you put in the die, lined up to your outline, tape it in place, and it SHOULD give you a perfect cut. Should being the operating word there....you keep the template forever with the die.

I suspect the industry always struggles with giving us "masculine" images and moustaches are a part of that. Technically a woman could fish or do anything but we generally dont want a moustasche

Do I need a foley? LMAO. Um no...you DONT want one. They are a type of catheter amoung other things.

Beth-I'll have to take your word for CAS mixed media.

LOL! wavejumper, cross my heart. ; ) One definition: a technique that involves combining two or more artistic media, such as ink and pastel, or painting and collage, that are combined in a single composition."

Mixed media started around 1912 with Picasso and a couple others. (My guess: he brought it to the public's attention but it was around earlier.) The current uber-heavy, layered look is just a huge trend. It can be light and airy or crazy weird.

Oh, right about foley, didn't think about that. LOL!

For those that loathe blending stumps: I abandoned them long ago in favor of these: Swisspers Cosmetic Cotton Applicators

They have a pointy end and a wide, flat-ish end, so you can blend pretty much anywhere, you can toss them when you're over it instead of using an emery board or sandpaper, and they work just fine. You have to "fiddle" a bit when you first start using them to get the feel, but then you just carry on. I haven't used blending stumps for so long that I can't really say how they measure up results-wise, but I've been happy enough to not look back...

But other than that, I don't like demonic images on my paper crafting projects.

It might just be a southwestern thing - we love our Dia de los Muertos artwork down here in northern Mexico

I am 100% repulsed by blending st-s though. As much by the actual product and the horrid squeaking sound they make as I am by the name of them. I will never say that word LOL.

I do have the template for a few dies that are solid - that's how some of the early MFT dies I got were like. It's super useful for the solid dies, but I don't like to use them for the open dies -- feels like it's defeating the purpose of having an open die that's "easy" to line up. I may have to do it anyway, but it still feels faster when I fussy-cut...

I'm just frustrated at not being able to figure out why they're shifting. Is it something I'm doing? Something in the design? I have it in the back of my head if I could figure out the why, I could avoid it.

Or I'll just stick to fussy-cutting. I'm one of those rare weird people that actually enjoys fussy-cutting, so I might as well embrace it. ;)
