Default what does this sentiment mean?

I was looking at recently uploaded cards this morning and was puzzled by a sentiment. It said "more cowbell." Am I totally dense? I don't understand what that means. Can anyone enlighten me? Maybe my brain just hasn't caught up to my body and is still asleep? LOL The script was cool on it, and the card was colorful and adorable. I just was wondering what it meant, or maybe it doesn't mean anything at all??

It's a reference to a Saturday Night Live skit with Christopher Walken. I don't remember all the details, but I remember that it was a parody of those "behind the scenes" documentaries. Walken was a record producer and his big idea was to always add "MORE COWBELL". I'll bet you could find the sketch on YouTube.

Your post made me so curious that I searched for it on google. Here's what I found:

Needs More Cowbell is a catchphrase originally quoted in a Saturday Night Live (SNL) sketch featuring Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell. This expression is typically used to indicate something needs more emphasis--or literally, when it needs more cowbell.

I guess I'm out of the loop. I had never heard the phrase either. If you search online there is more info.

I've been hearing that phrase, too and you got me curious, so this is what I learned:
More cowbell:
Something everyone needs more of
a remedy
(from Urban dictionary)

where it came from? An SNL skit in 2000
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_cowbell (loooonnnngggggg explanation and background!)
clip of the skit: https://vimeo.com/55624839

I'm so glad you asked. It been one of those things I've wondered about but never remembered once I was in a place to find out, and now I know two things: what the heck it means and better ... there's a STAMP of it (and I have a fabulous large stamp of a cow, a pig and a sheep in a sort of can can line and a friend who's soon to retire. How perfect is that?!)

ETA: Holy Schmoly! when I first read your question, there weren't any responses. You asked a great question, didn't you?! lol!

I encourage everyone to track down the skit and watch it. It was so funny, that I almost couldn't breathe from laughing the first time I saw it.

Will Ferrell is playing a cowbell as they pretend they are the band Blue Oyster Cult; they are 'playing "Don't Fear the Reaper"'. He's banging away on that cowbell like his life depends on it. Christopher Walken, the record producer stops the band, comes out, and I expect him to say something about toning down the cowbell. Instead he says "needs more cowbell". Words can't describe how funny it was to me....I worked in a record store in the late 70's.

Oh Victoria, I'm sure your memories of a record store are top notch!! That would have been my dream job!! I still have my old 33's and 45's and my kids think they are abolutely hilarious - warp speed forward to tiny CDs .... yeah, yeah - ROFL!

I agree - the FUNNIEST skit!

FABULOUS stamp - captures the essence of happy times on a card!

Good grief! I have never heard of such a silly thing... I am also not a SLN conneseiur.

I guess I am pretty traditional in my style of sentiment.

Just watched a whole marathon of SNL last weekend. It was a documentary-type thing with each hour highlighting a different decade and cast, with interviews and clips of skits and musical guests and hosts and it was FUN!!! The cowbell skit was one of the highlights of that hour. Apparently the skit wasn't working until Will changed his shirt (watch the skit to see why it matters...) The Gilda Radner/Steve Martin/John Belushi days were, of course, my faves (because I'm old), but there have been some amazing casts since then - Tina Fey, anyone...?

The shirt....yep! Best part of that skit! Will Ferrell is definitely not afraid to make a fool of himself now, is he?

Here's some more funny history on that. I live in the Sacramento area and our NBA basketball team is the Sacramento Kings. In the early 2000's, there was a huge rivalry with the LALakers, especially after their coach Phil Jackson said Sacramento was just a big cow town - nothing to do there. So after that, everyone brought cowbells to the games. Coaches have been complaining to the NBA about how loud it is when the cowbells are being used. Now, in the 4th quarter, they show that skit on the jumbo screen and everyone gets going with the cowbells.

So, if you have friends/family in the area, they will identify with "we need more cowbell"!

I have to admit...I am stuck in the old SNL...maybe because I was just the right age for it at the time...Samuri, Blues Brothers, the loud family, the big bottomed family, roseanne rosanneadanna (sp),....I just never liked another generation as much.

Chris Walken is huge in this house. This skit, the commercial where he is dancing....

On the other hand I think Monty Python's The Holy Grail is the funniest thing I have ever seen.

That's pretty funny about Sacramento!

Anyway, back to the point-that stamp set is in my wishlist!

Let's not forget Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo and Billy Crystal! (I, too, am OLD, and fond of the early years of SNL) As I am too old to stay up that late anymore, I'm going to go look at the cowbell skit.

I'm still a sucker for the Bass-O-Matic. I fall apart, laughing until I cry when I watch Dan Ackroyd do that one!

OMGosh, the Bass-o-Matic! A classic! And remember the Julia Child episode where she cut herself?! I don't think I've ever laughed so hard. And yes, I am old, too! But those things are still hysterical. Thanks for the chuckle today!!

Wasn't Dan Ackroyd wonderful?

I love silly- the water ski scene in Weekend At Bernies also makes me laugh until my face hurts.

I was with my sister (she's 6 years younger than I am) and we came across some coasters for Land Shark beer (shaped like a fin). I was cracking up , but she didn't get the reference at all... ("Candygram...")

First thing that pops into my head when Saturday Night Live comes up is "Ohhh no, Mr. Bill!" . Next is "Roseanna Danna Danna". Now I have to go google those to see what year(s) they were. I'm almost afraid to!

The Coneheads

SNL News with Jane Curtin & Dan Ackroyd- "Jane, you ignorant ****"

Eddie Murphy as Gumby?

Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat (Buh-wheat & the Du-preams)

I may have to look for The Best of SNL, so much of this bears watching again. Hm.

Default More cowbell!

Check out the new stamp set from SU! called Labeler Alphabet. It has 2 sets of fonts for letters so that you can spell out your own sentiments. One set has duplicate letters for double letter needs--"more cowbell" would need two o,e, and l letters, but you could do it! It is one of my favorite sets from the new Catalog that came out a few weeks ago...You could also write "landshark", "it's always something," or any other SNL catchphrase you like; but "cheeeesburger" takes a lot of e's!

Thanks for posting the original skit; I laughed until my ever-present cat thought I was really coming unhinged! I also sent the video on to my husband and 22 year old daughter who are huge SNL fans!:
