My first post! Does anyone have any good tips on using the layering stamps? I recently purchased the Altenew Peony Set. I love it, but it's not easy to use. I use my MISTI and that helps, but it takes a long time to line up each layer and I don't always get it right. I'm practising lots. Would love to hear how others are managing. I tried using the search function here, but it doesn't seem to be working. Thanks.
I dont do the layering stamps but if you look down the thread list here, there is a dedicated thread for My Sweet Petunia all about using the MISTI. I am sure you should see stuff there. Also, if you go to the forum link, then look at the master list of boards...there is a techique board and they may also have discussions there about it.
Edit: Ok I thought it was a sub-thing but it seems to be a stand alone post. Which means there must be 100 of them by now. So we need someone to point to the one you want. Sorry.

I have used a Stamp-A-Ma-Jig for a long time and found that easier than Misti to line up layering stamps. With that I can actually see the inked image that will be laid down over the first image.

I swear by my MISTI. Polymer stamps and rubber stamps are a breeze. I use a piece of clear acetate to align my rubber stamps, they're easy to align. Better than a stamp-a-ma-jig, IMHO, because multiple cards are super fast 'n easy to do. Plus, I've never had a mistake if I need to double stamp.
Thanks all. Dina you are a talented artist. I went to the Misti thread and watched a video using acetate to help with positioning. I also remembered seeing a video, I think Jennifer McGuire's, where she used a matching die to help position a stamp. I've tried that and it worked great. I'm getting better at it. I stamped the outline and solid background and then placed the die to align. I then placed the inner detailed stamp, picked it up with the Misti door, removed the die, and then stamped. It worked really well. The inner detail stamps are the hardest to align as you need to find the correct angle. Thanks again.
It takes a little practice, and I agree - a lot of the sets have no wiggle room for placement, and can be hard to match up! I made a set of templates for the Impression Obsession sets, but I don't think those have been published yet.

Depending on how intricate the image is, it sometimes can be easier to use a positioning sheet rather than lining up the stamps themselves. I have a video explaining what I mean.

OMG I meant to quote HarvestMoon in my post below in reference to our liking the MISTI or Stamp-A-Ma-Jig. I've never had any luck with the Stamp-A-Ma-Jig, but have seen others use it with ease.

I was taught in person, which always makes things easier. We layered the set without a stamp positioning tool. (I wanted to be able to layer effectively before moving to a positioner anyway, in case I didn't have one with me or decided not to buy one.)
We were told to use lightest colors first. And over time I've found it helps to use acrylic blocks that are large enough to see what I had already stamped. For example, if a small leaf was on too small a block, my fingers and the block edge got in the way of the image. A case of the blocking block. ; ) Not too too big, just enough to see the whole image. Oh - and I stand up for all but the first image to get right over it.
But you have the big guns here to guide you so my relatively newbie hints are probably too simple. : ) Now off to watch Lydia's video. Good luck!

Lydia, wonderful video. I so wish I had seen it before I bought thick Grafix Duralar to use for something your quilting piece would be so much better for!
I keep stumbling across micropore tape on videos, blogs, etc. Do you - or anyone - find it more useful than removable tape, repositionable tape or washi tape?
Wow, Dina, your 5-layer (5!) flower looks real. Now that intimidates me. I'm more of a 3-layers after a good night's sleep person. I need to re-read your process when I have a 5-layer stamp to play with.

Since all my stamps are wood mounted (I prefer it that way), I use my stamp positioner. I love it and usually have great success. I know those that have gone unmounted love having a Misti, though.
Yes Jeanne, I've switched to clear stamps because I have discovered the Misti. I was a holdout and just got it a few months ago due to the cost. I live in Canada so it cost me over $100, but worth every penny. The more I use it the more I love it. I was not really a good stamper and held my breath every time I stamped to see if I got a clear impression. I was doing less stamping and more die-cutting to make cards. I'm having fun stamping and colouring again.

I just bought that same set and had to practice some before I figured out how to position the stamps (I used both Misti and blocks). What I am working on next is trying to figure out what ink colors I have that go together for these flowers! If you use the Misti, you can stamp with a lighter color 2 or 3 times to get it darker instead of running out and buying a darker ink! (wait, is that really a bad thing?!:rolleyes

I like the subtle look of stamping the layers with the same colour, but I did purchase the cube sets from Altenew. I really like the ink and the prices weren't bad for the cubes.

I just want to weigh in here and say that I feel your pain. The Peony set is one of the hardest to line up, but as you found, with practice you will almost certainly crack the code!

I did have to start with the hardest one, didn't I? The peony flower is the hardest to line up. The bud is much easier. Although I think that I've got a good handle on it now. So I've ordered the Dahlia Blossom set now. It looks like it might be easier. I love the look of the layers. Beautiful stamps.
I don't have any placement tips beyond what's already here but once I get mine lined up whether by misti or stamp position, I stamp lots to use later in what ever my favourite colour combos are. It only takes a couple more minutes and saves tons of time later. I stick them in the back of the package so they are handy for next time.

I just watched a great video on the Altenew website on layering the Peony stamp. Let me see if I can find it....in sort, she stamped the base layer, then the outline stamp, then the shadows. With the outline stamped, it was easier to Lind up the shadows.
This is great topic...I have been hand stamping the peony set..takes practice..still not
perfect but, working on it.

For that largest peony stamp, I had to stamp the outline first, then the next detailed. I found that you can stamp the solid image last and because you've stamped the darker outlines first, it is much easier then. Here's what my notes to myself say....
Stamp dark to light. Outline first in darkest, then details in medium and lastly the solid light. You also need to stamp on a mat or pad for a better image. Trust me. I played and played and was so frustrated u til I started dark to light. Just on the largest peony. Everything else seems to be OK whichever way you stamp.
I just got that stamp and have been playing around with it in my MISTI. I does take a bit of practice and fooling around with...use the printed acetate from the set to try and position it. Good luck!
I was having the same issues with the Hero Arts Goldfish (a gorgeous stamp). Changing the order of stamping, which is counterintuitive, to stamping the detailed stamp first, is the secret for me. I don't have a Misti, so working with acrylic blocks and the details really helps me line up the others. Thank you so much.

Jennifer McGuire (love her) made a video of stamping layered stamps on velum. Neat idea. I tried it and it looks good. The whole glueing layers of velum together is a small problem.
Thanks for all of the great suggestions. I've been struggling a bit with the Altenew Vintage Roses set. I've had it for a while and just don't use it because it's so complicated. I'll have to try some of these tips.
