TLC 589 ~ Everything Old is New Again - Faux Cloisonne {06/06/2016}
Happy Monday, everybody! It's the first Monday of the month again, so it's time for Everything Old is New Again! It should be Judy's turn this month, but she kindly swapped with me as I will be away from home in early July.
Today we are re-visiting Faux Cloisonn.
It was first featured as TLC48, and then again as TLC159 - and I still have the card I made for that challenge and still love it!
Cloisonn is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects, in recent centuries using vitreous enamel, and in older periods also inlays of cut gemstones, glass, and other materials. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonn. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments (cloisons in French) to the metal object by soldering or affixing silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel or inlays, which are often of several colors. (Wikipedia)
You will need.....
Outline stamps Magazine/calendar glossy pages Versamark or gold pigment ink Gold embossing powder
(If you prefer to use another metallic colour for stamping and embossing, that will be fine. Traditionally the wire used for cloisonn is either gold or silver).
Find a magazine picture or calendar photo in colours suitable for your chosen stamps. Stamp directly onto the magazine/calendar page. Gold emboss the image(s) and cut out. For those who wish to use dies, I am sure that will work fine, although it will leave a slight outline around your image; there weren't many matching dies and stamps around back when this technique first featured!
Another option which I think would work is if you have a die with a delicate outline frame, cut it from gold or silver metallic card and inlay it with pieces cut from the magazine. There may be a problem resulting from different thicknesses of paper, though, and I didn't have any suitable dies to try it with. The idea of using magazine pages is to give the slightly glossy finish of the enamels used in the real thing...so you could use regular papers coated with Glossy Accents or something similar.
:arrow: Remember to use the keyword TLC589 when you are uploading. It's helpful (to the hostesses for sure!) if you come back and leave a link on this thread .
If you're not sure how to link your card on the thread here, here's how:
1. Open 2 windows or tabs: one window for your card and one for this thread. 2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link. 3. Go to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www. splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on) 4. Click EDIT. Click COPY 5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE.
Happy Monday, everybody! It's a holiday Monday here and yesterday was our wedding anniversary so if the weather is good we might take a short trip out somewhere. And if it's not, then I get to play with my new stamps :mrgreen:. I hope you have fun with the challenge.
This is too funny! Just last night , I used a teacup, and teapot I had made using this technique on a scrap page I uploaded! I think it is same technique. I had those in my stash from doing it several years ago, and finally used them. But your card wasn't using a magazine, Sabrina. Your card is gorgeous!
Terrific challenge, Sabrina, but I messed it up. Used a matte catalog page...next time I'll buy a magazine with glossy paper to have on hand for this technique. Thanks.
Oh, I love this technique and haven't done it in ages! I've taught series of technique classes and this one is always a huge favorite with class members. Now, my biggest problem is I don't subscribe to any magazines anymore except Time. Will have to do some searching around here to find something to use : )

I cannot believe the only glossy magazine pages I have are in craft magazines and craft catalogs! So I used the suggestion of glossy accents...turned out okay, but am now drumming fingers on desk waiting for it to dry!
My double-layered cloisonne' card for this challenge. I stamped my chosen SU stamp on a National Geographic page showing an ice cave, and then on a second page that had a flower with a black background. Fussy cut the butterfly out and positioned it over the black version using Stampin' Dimensionals. Hadn't done a card with this technique in 3 years when I used it for a swap card at Convention! This was a fun technique. I don't have any magazines but I located some that I could use where I work. Thanks for the fun challenge and happy anniversary!
Hope this links to the card. It is Tangerine Tango if this only goes to my gallery //www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/2726547?&cat=500&ppuser=34361
