Question Punches that are Jammed~

Hi~

Does anyone know how to fix a punch that is jammed? Especially the straight FISKARS punches? There is not paper stuck. Please message me if you know how...I can never get back to the same thread!

Thanks so much!

Well I can't help you with the punch but I can help you find the threads you have posted to or started.

Click on the welcome, username up in the right corner
then scroll down to almost the end on that page along the left side you'll see "subscribed threads" "list subscriptions"
click there and you'll see all the threads you have posted to, started or subscribed to

if banging and dropping dont work, which usually will LOL

take a picture of the punch and attatch to an email to fiskars warranty dept, explain that it is stuck and will not let go and you want it replaced.

within a couple of days you should hear back form them.

i have had 2 trimmers and a pucnh replced this way, no charges nor did i have to send defective products back!

I take a breath....and then bang the hell out of it till it comes undone, or I'm feeling better about how my neighbors let the dogs bark all day....

I burst out laughing when I saw this because it's the most effective way I found to unstick a stuck punch. An added plus is usually I'm a little frustrated since the stuck punch has probably also eaten my paper so throwing it on the floor let's me relieve some of that frustration.

Sticking the punch in the freezer for a few minutes also works - but, hey, where's the fun in that!

It's soooo funny to see how many other girls have found the same way I do to unstick
a punch. It happened last night to me and I slammed it on the counter. Good way to take out your frustrations!

I laughed at the throwing it on the floor, simple, easy solution. I usually bang it on the table, adding a few choice words while my dog barks. Love this thread lot of good laughs

Had a McGill punch with multiple small flowers that ALWAYS jammed. Tried different weights of c/s. Tried all the above mentioned ways to unstick the punch. The final throw down was into the depth of my garbage can - GOOD RIDDANCE! Couldn't waste the time to fiddle with it any more - tried sharpening it with foil, lubricating with waxed paper, sprayed with WD40 - left it overnight on newspaper and punched on scrape paper until no oily edges on the paper I could get out, used the items in a punch lubricating tool set. Nothing worked so send off to the metal recycling dump without shedding a tear.

I think some punches just don't work. This was a big button style punch. Yes, I used a 'punch buddy' thing and no luck.

I use my embossing stylus and push the parts back up from the bottom of the punch. I tried dropping one of my punches on the floor once, and it came apart. Luckily I was able to find all the pieces and figure out how to put it back together and it still works, but those springs go flying and I'd be scared to either get hit in the eye (its only fun till someone gets poked in the eye ) or losing a spring.

hi

handed my creative memory punch to my husband with a screw driver so he could take it apart. The punch stopped working after 3 punches and since I got it at a stamp expo and no longer had the paper work, I could not return it. I felt he could do no more damage.

He may have fix it. It took us both to work on it.

I guess you can only use creative memory punches or at least this punch, on paper, not cardstock and right side up so the paper does not fall into the punch and jam it. Had I been told this when I got the punch, not 6 months later when I attended the next stamp expo, I would not have wasted my money.

I did try a couple of punches, right side up, with paper, after my husband took the punch completely apart. I don't even know where it is now. I know he had it working. Since I can only use it right side up and on paper???????????

This is good to know !!
Although, after a couple of bad experiences with other brands of punches now I only buy EK success, Martha Stewart or SU ( both made by EK success) punches.

EK Success seems to be the only company who has figured out how to design and manufacture a punch that works on paper or card stock.

I knew this was going to be a Fiskars punch when I read the thread title! I would have bet money on it! It's exactly the reason I won't ever buy another Fiskars punch! As for how to fix it...please don't ask me...today I have had a laptop that wouldn't connect to the the internet, a desktop that wouldn't recognize an external hard drive and do a back-up and now this evening my printer won't print! I think I will just go to bed and the heck with electronics!

...and after you get it unstuck, punch some waxed paper. It will help lube it up and (hopefully!) prevent it from happening again.

I went to a crop last week, and one of the ladies at the end of the table had a problem with one of her Fiskars punches. My friend and I were sitting there, scrapping and chatting, when all of a sudden, we heard a dull "pop," much like the sound that is made when you blow into a paper bag and pop it. We turned in the direction of the sound and saw the woman holding the handle of the punch, which had snapped off in pieces. I'm just glad none of the pieces hit anyone. She was punching light-weight cardstock, and the punch was jammed shut. Please watch your eyes when trying to un-jam these punches, ladies. Don't try to force them, either. I find that tapping them on the table usually works. I have been known to throw a few on the floor too.

I own several Fiskar punches, sometimes they work and sometimes they do not. I noticed on on one the reason it was jamming is because the metal design was cracked. What are the better punches out there??

At least with the Fiskars puches, if you email them a picture of the broken handle on the punch they will either send you a new one or a gift card so you can replace it - no questions asked and you don't have to send them the broken punch. I broke the handle off one of mine and they sent me a Michaels gift card.

For sticky punches, I've also read that using fine grit sandpaper will help. I haven't tried it yet myself.

if you don't want to risk them coming apart when you bang them around, the freezer trick works every time for me. Put it in there 30 to 60 mins.

haaaaaaaaaaa too funny

I'm currently having problems with a MS deep edge punch so may well try all of the above suggestions before I take it back for a replacement/refund.

Wanted to comment on jammed punches. My issue was a Martha punch, the shell design. It seized up. I tried the freezer and knocking it. Then I got out 3:1 machine oil and oiled every opening I could find: under the handle, slot on top of handle, the punch part, too. Magically it released my oily paper and started operating smoothly. Then I punched through foil and cleaned the shavings out of the punch with a toothbrush. I continued with wax paper, paper towel(won't punch thru, but absorbs oil), magazine weight paper, copy paper. Had to use the toothbrush every time. Oil is messy. Took a half hour. The punch now operates smoothly, good as new. I now use a toothbrush a lot and will lubricate any punch that seems a bit stiff before it jams completely. I broke a handle on a Fiskars punch also and avoid them.

cmagro..I love that MS punch..it is easily my favorite of all the many punches I own..recently while using it on my Easter Cards it broke! I cant complain though I think I wore it out because I have used it to make easily hundreds of cards already. I went out and bought another one...I was freaking out thinking I might not be able to find another one...lol
blessings.

Default fiskar punches

Thanks for posting. I've had Fiskars do that before. Next time, I'll notify the company.

Thumbs up Thank you!

My brand-new EK success triple-layer heart punch just locked up. I poked it, slid paper through it, wiggled the adjustment thingie ... nothing. So I looked to you ladies for advice and then threw it on the floor. Ta-da! Working punch. You guys rock.

Default Final Solution

We have all had this problem and I have done the banging, aluminum, freezer techniques until I figured out that I was using paper that was too heavy for most punches, especially the fiskars and MS. Now I use lighter weight paper for things that have to be punched. I use drawing or watercolor paper, 50 lb or less paper never sticks. Card weight paper, 70 lb and up will stick and ruins your punch. Light weight paper never sticks. Try it.

I realize this thread is several years old, but I've got a SU 2inch circle punch that is jammed. May be user error--I tried to punch a half circle on the fold of SU cardstock, so it was 2 layers. Had to tear my card in process to get the punch out, and now it won't work on even scrap paper, like copy paper. Add to the issue that I buy SU products from Ebay, as well as 2 demonstrators, 1 in town and 1 out of town. The new catalog still has this punch available, but will it be less hassle for me to go to Joann's or Michael's with a coupon and replace it, and then not try to use it on more than one layer? I did NOT try throwing it on the ground, or putting it in the freezer. But what do I have to lose?

I've got an SU punch that I love, and it's no longer available. It goes with an older stamp that I'm extremely fond of, so I won't give it up. This punch sticks Every.Single.Time. I use it. I drop it on my kitchen table until it unsticks, then I start over again. When my husband's home, I make sure I warn him before the noise begins! I've never tried the freezer trick mentioned here, so I think I'll give that a go next. SU Customer Service is quite good, and since your punch is still available, I'd encourage you to get in touch with them regarding this.

I just saw a video about this I think it was yesterday. Put your punch in a freezer for an hour or so.

I will try to find the video.

I tried the freezer for several hours-no luck. Have reached out to a SU demonstrator for recommendations. It's almost as though the punch mechanism has gotten off alignment--it won't close to lock either. thanks for the suggestions/replies...

I have carpet, so dropping on the floor is not a choice. I don't want to damage my tables or counters, so slamming on those is not an option. I use my sturdy Kitchen scissors to push on the back side....really hard. Once it's back in place I punch on foil, or for simple punches a flattened pop can is a better sharpener. Next time I will try the freezer trick.
Every brand I have has jammed at least once.
