Brother Scan and Cut Machine
Just received an email from Brother about a new machine they're bringing out in October that scans and cuts. They say "The world's first home and hobby cutting machine with a built-in scanner."

Brother are generally a very high quality manufacturer, so this looks interesting. However, I will be waiting to see what the pitfalls are- What will it cut, what is the software like, in other words, just how user friendly is it going to be? I will be very surprised if its cross compatible with files from other systems! Everyone is out to make money out of crafters these days, it seems, when it really is possible for all the machines to be compatible, but thats not in their financial interests.

I got this post today about it from a blog I subscribe to. May Flaum has one and used it for her daughters birthday party. It does not connect to a computer. Apparently all it does is cut out pictures you scan into it.

At first I just wrote this off. But now that I've thought about it, I wonder if it would be worth the purchase to cut out pre-stamped and colored images? That would save me money on buying matching die cuts.

I'm not convinced this is better than any of the other machines already on the market. The one video that Arizona posted doesn't show how they actually get the image lined up to cut in the right spot unless its scanning the entire mat and basing the cutting on where the image is on the mat. I'd like to see more specs on the machines capabilities - particularly the cutting force. It seems to me its kind of a hybrid of a Cameo and a Cricut. It will be interesting to see how this one fairs against the other machines. I suppose there will be people who will like it and use it.

I agree. Maybe if it could link to a computer it would be more tempting. Looks like you'd still need a Cameo or similar to do plain , non-printed, cuts.
Maybe they'll bring out a Cameo with a scanner. I can dream!

I saw a demo of this today at the quilt shop. They have a model that cuts either fabric or paper. Being a quilter as well this was awesome! When she demonstrated all that it could do I was amazed. I hear that there will be a special on HSN for the machine. But that version will be paper only. So scrapbookers watch for the HSN deal. It is pretty awesome.

It is not two different machines. One just includes more features, that's why it costs more. The basic unit is 399 the upgraded unit is 599.
This machine is good for people who don't like being tied to the computer when crafting. LIKE ME. I rarely turn on my Cameo because I am using my computer for watching movies while crafting, not for cutting. Also the scanner allows you to skip the printing the registration marks step on the Cameo. |

I picked up my ScanNCut yesterday......... I have used it for about 3 hours...... I have NOT opened the manual..... you can read about my out-of-the-box experiences here:

I am really enjoying my new ScanNcut...wonderful for stampers. I stamped these images ran them through my SNC and was able to cut them out and include a margin. So easy to do.

I just got mine last week so I'm still playing with it. I haven't tried it using colored inks yet...though I think I have seen an example from someone else where they did. As far as coloring in the image first, I haven't done that either, but again I saw an example from someone else that did that and it worked. I have cut out colored clipart I printed it and it cut that fine. I am going to test this and see for myself. I will let you know.
The machine cuts really well and is super easy to use. |

My sister works for Brothers and has brought this machine home to test it out. We had the best time. I'm into scrapbooking and do a lot of paper piecing. You can scan your image, then break it apart to cut all pieces. It's amazing!! I can take anything now and paper piece it together. So excited...

Can you choose how close you want to cut round an image, ie right on the line or with a white edge round it? If you choose right on the line is it accurate?

It allows and offset (variety of distances) or not..no negative offset though. If you choose no offset, it is accurate. You will see a bit of the outline it cut on. |

I have fussy cut from paper with success. I haven't tried this a whole lot though. I need to play with that feature some more. |

No registration marks...it saves a step. I have a Cameo which I bought primarily to do print and cuts and I hate the registration marks step.
Also the SNC allows you to stamp an image on paper then feed that paper through and cut it out. I know the Eclips has stamp2cut, but the Cameo does not. But with the SNC you again skip that registration marks step. |

Whoa - hefty price
I've got a Silhouette Cameo on my wish list which is pricey enough for me. I want to create my own images for use in my homemade cards and fussy cutting is difficult for me as my hands don't work that well. I'll even be able to make my own embossing folders for use in my little Sizzix Texture Boutique. I've already downloaded the free software and started designing. I just can't see paying that kind of money for the Brother.

I am interested in this too! It sounds really great however, I have never used an electronic cutter. Seems easy from what I hear. This is the best price I've seen and comes with a warranty for 3 years.

I have a Cameo ,which I love ,and really wanted to make die cuts for all my stamps but didn't think it was possible without the Designer Edition but I read on a thread here that someone had posted a way to do it without DE. A woman on youtube (cleversomeday) posted a very easy to follow video. I tried it and now can make all my own die cuts!!!
So if you already own a Silhouette Portrait or Cameo there's no need for the scan and cut. If you don't then I can see this machine being a fantastic thing to have. If I didn't have a Cameo I definitely would be wanting the scan and cut!

I have a cameo AND a scan n cut. Cutting stamped images and doing print and cuts is so much easier and faster with the SNC. No registrations marks to fiddle with, no need to turn on the computer. Just stamp your image on paper and run it through the machine.
Is it perfect? No. There are certain types of stamps it can't detect...like ones with a lot of open lines..but for many stamps it is great. It has definitely made me use my stamps so much more.
