Heart HYCCT1522 Tears Can Be a Good Thing Chat Thread

Challenge Title: Tears Can be a Good Thing
Hostess: ohmypaper! (Angie)
Keyword: HYCCT1522
Date: Thursday, 10/22/15

Tears are the noble language of eyes, and when true love of words is destitute. The eye by tears speak, while the tongue is mute.
― Robert Herrick

The journey of the breast cancer patient is an emotional experience with tears usually accompanying the process at some point; tears during the difficult times and tears of joy over favorable reports.

I have been doing a little research on tears and one of the things I learned is that no two tears are alike. Under a microscope, tears look somewhat like snowflakes! Another interesting tid bit is that emotional tears contain protein-based hormones that are produced by our body when under stress. It seems that our body gets rid of these chemicals through the release of tears. That might explain why we usually feel better after a good cry, so go ahead, it's ok to cry!

For my challenge, we are going to use water to release ink to flow over our paper to create something beautiful! Please use the WRINKLE FREE DISTRESS technique on your card.

TIP: The tutorial shows the use of more than one color family but feel free to experiment! With both of my samples, I used only two inks and stayed in the same color family.

TIP: For best results make sure to dry your cardstock in between the swishes of cardstock through the ink and don't forget to tap your paper on the last little bits of droplets to create fabulous water splatters!

Thanks so much for taking part in the challenges and MOST especially for MAILING your cards to MD Anderson! I can't wait to see what you create!!!

2. You may not combine challenges, but you are welcome to create multiple cards for each challenge.
3. Please remember to put in the correct keyword when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.
4. Please package all challenge entries with an envelope, protected with a clear plastic bag and mail them to our partner at the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center to benefit patients being treated for breast cancer and their family. Oh, oh - one of my all-time favourite go-to background techniques, ever since I had my first two distress ink pads, LOL. I have to make a card today!!And how fascinating about tears - I didn't know that!

I read the tutorial for the technique for this thread and I sure wish Lydia has posted a supplies list - I have no Ranger Ink and am not sure what's meant by a craft sheet...... Guess I'll punt.

Hi ladies!!! I am so glad you are here!! Lynn, brought up a great point. I should have added a couple of tips!

Any ink will work!!!

If you don't have a craft mat you can take a baggie, cut it open and stamp your ink on that OR Susie Australia uses foil for a craft mat for her incredible backgrounds!!!!

I can't wait to see what you create!!!

Lynn, I laid my colors down on a plastic pallette but you can use anything that won't soak up water. Also, use your dye inks if you don't have the ranger inks. It is water based. Inks like SU work well. And I tried the foam pads and the old style and you can use them both.

A craft sheet is just a non-stick sheet. If you have a silpat for baking or wax paper or acetate I think they will work just fine, too!

You can also use a plastic place mat.

The other girls have chimed in with all sorts of alternatives to a craft mat - I used to use a plastic bag. It doesn't have to be Ranger inks either - any dye ink will work fine, you just might get a slightly different result. The reason people prefer Ranger for water techniques is that the distress inks maintain more colour integrity when you wet them. You could even scribble water-based markers on a plastic bag and mist it, I'm sure that would work.

Water-based markers or any watercolor medium (paints, bars, powders, Gelatos, etc.) will work for this technique too. So much fun!

I only recently added Distress inks into my arsenal and I've been using a form of this technique for ages. I've used SU ink pads, scribbled markers and Gelatos for the ink medium. I've used plastic bags, craft mats, pieces of acetate packaging and acrylic blocks as the base on which to lay the color. This technique is REALLY flexible! When we were discussing this in the hostess thread someone reminded us to dry the paper in between "dips" into the color to keep the look more distinct and the colors more separate.

The thing I like about HYCCT is that all the challenges bring out some techniques we don't use often or have never used. I have never done this one before. I usually use baby wipes with reinkers instead. So thanks for making me think outside the box.

I was so tickled when I saw Ann's card and on top of that they sit right next to one another in the gallery!!

Again, this proves how unique this technique is. The backgrounds are not the same!

Again, this proves how unique this technique is. The backgrounds are not the same!
I love the different colors in Ann's background!

I have never tried this technique before but I don't own any distress inks so I used my SU inks. I actually made 2 cards since I thought this technique was so unique and different. Here are the 2 cards I made: Friendship's Journey and Shimmery Snowflakes.

Angie, my friend, I'm taking my inky fingernails to the gym to sweat. And maybe cry-- Dunno, after today's very generous lunch!

Here's my distressed Helen Keller card: HYCCT1522 vision
