They are using some kind of metalic paper that is more interesting to me than the folders. And they all seem to be shown on this type of paper, in various colors. What is this stuff?

I looked and OMG - $6 per sheet at Amazon. Of course, half that price at Scrapbookingpal.com, but still expensive. (I would have to love someone a lot to give them one of these.)
That must be how they are burnishing/sanding the raised image and getting the steel look on the top.

I looked in Spellbinders hoping if it was something they sell they would list it. Unfortunaely not...you probably did that anyway. I mention it because they did say something about needing a "grand raspberry plate" for this kind of EF which I had never heard of...I dont know if you will need it.
My limited experience with sanding foils is the thicker ones emboss and sand way better.
Just have to be careful not to cut yourself on the edge. There are a lot of them on the market so I'd look around. I got lucky and got some on a deep clearance sale at my LSS. But the finished look is way cool imo. I think the steampunks were using it a lot for gears, etc.
What I have seen of alcohol inks on the foils has been very beautiful.

I tried this technique and it looks pretty good � nothing like foil but still pretty good in a pinch:

Wow, just when I get all the stuff I wanted bought, they are now coming out with new types of embossing folders... I have fallen in love with that basket weave one! Put any colored fruit up against that, or a bottle of wine...
I have done this technique many times. Dry Emboss a thick card stock or thin chipboard in the folder, then run the versamark pad flat across the top of the raised area and heat emboss with favorite metallic embossing powder. Don't get carried away with over inking with versamark or having too juicy of a pad....it will glop up raised embossing details.
I tried to use the spellbinders and other thin dies with the shimmer sheetz and didn't have any luck cutting them. The only die I found that would cut it was one of the big thick I think they are from Tim Holtz dies, they look like a book almost? I think they call them steel dies or something. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I havent really tried to cut them with dies yet. I cut them to the size of the embossing folder and use them as full backgrounds.
What Spellbinders used for the stock photos on most of the older EFs were the foils they used to sell. They are since retired. They are called Premium Craft Foils and came in a few assortments. F-012 is Precious Metals, F-014 Delicate Pastels and I don't have the 3rd pack anymore. The foils are super thin and came in a variety of colors 6 colors per pack with the reverse side silver.
To get the two toned effect and to show off the EF details, they lightly sanded the foil on the raised portions and by doing that, it showed the silver tone thru.

I did do this technique, and really liked it. I have a ton of acrylics for Gelli play, so it worked out nicely. But it never came out to look like those product photos on Amazon - that paper made those embossing folders look fabulous.
It looks like metal sheets. Ten Seconds Studio has some in a variety of colors, or you can purchase it plain and use alcohol inks to color. It's then sanded after being embossed.
If you don't need to do very large pieces of it, you can buy metal tape at Home Depot inexpensively (in the HVAC area). It's self-adhesive and you can put it on cardstock and then run it through your embossing machine.

I did some comparison shopping for each folder, and 50% discount cinched the deal. Hated to pay over $10 for shipping though (a Amazon Prime member). I'm excited to get the folders and create some of those metallic embossed cards.
