How do you make a "flat" knot?

I know this is a dumb question but I have to ask. I am VERY bow challenged so most times I just make a knot when using ribbon. By dumb luck I have gotten 1 or 2 sort of flat but the rest are a little bulky. So someone please tell me how to make a flat knot so I won't worry everytime I go to mail a card. Here are a couple of examples:

i didnt make these card.. so i dont know the answer... but it looks like it was tied loosely in the middle.. and the ends taped to the back to look so flat.. you can tie it loosely and smoosh the middle down to look more "flat".

Here are 2 tips that work for me. I have 3 little girls, so I tie lots of bows--on cards and dresses!

1. On a card, try tying upside down. Turn your card around and tie a bow--seems to help!

2. After you have tied your first tie, form the loop with the ribbon that is on "top" of the tie, and use the ribbon that comes under the first tie to wrap around. I don't mean literally the ribbon on the top of the card, but the one that is on "top" of the tie. I don't know if that makes any sense, but if you look at it as you tie, there is definitely one that is "under" the first tie!

Maybe when pulling place your finger on the knot to try to shape it flat and not let it bulk up ????? That way you'll know when to stop pulling.

I think you hit the nail on the head! That is what it looks like to me too!

This isn't really for tying a knot... but a bow, and I'm not sure I can explain this well enough but here goes. My friend taught me this, instead of tying the bow like you would regularly, tie it "backwards."
Take the loop you make in your right hand and wrap the left loop around the left side and under. (Usually I would take it around the right hand side and under)
I hope that helps, and makes sense!! It seems to help me make straighter, flatter bows for me.

I think that this is how the flat knot in your examples is made. Hold one end of the length of ribbon in your left hand and the other in your right hand. Wrap the right end around your left index finger. Put the end that is on your right side through the loop that is on your left index finger. Pull the ends slightly until you have the size knot you want. Hope this helps. Suesmithstamps

I use a mini glue dot to hold it in place and keep it from twisting.
