Default Fads I am happy I missed

We have the buyers remorse threads so I thought it would be fun to list the Fads we are happy we missed

I never bought buttons for the button fad
I have a sewing machine and sew clothing, but I never started sewing on my cards
I don't have an iTop to make brads and buttons
I missed the tinsel and fibers on cards fad
Only bought 2 sheets of Christmas stickers and used those on gift tags to get rid of them.
I didn't buy the Tim Holtz distress markers or paints.

So far I have not gotten into the foiling , but I am weakening on that fad if I can find an economical way to do it LOL

What Fad(s) did you miss ?

The whole sewing thing is a fad I didn't get. But I have been bit by a few fads.

I almost, but didn't get into the I-Top thing... no regrets and if I ever get the feeling again for fabric ones, I'll use the little tool that I bought years ago from the sewing notions aisle for making them...

All the WeRMemories Sewing/stitching stuff

I love foiling, but I was lucky to already have a laser printer and laminator and Joanne's had the Minc foil on clearance, so it turned out pretty economical for me. I wish I had missed the texture paste fad. I have two jars drying up on my shelf.

I have allowed the Copic bandwagon to pass me by :-) and I'm insisting with myself that I will also allow the foiling trend to pass me by as well. I only own one small batch of sequins, and no enamel dots at all. I will also not be participating in this recent nautical theme trend! I may cave eventually on the Zig Clean Color Brush markers, but just a tiny pack...

Oh It looks like I missed a few more trends .
I had to google enamel dots as I did not know what they were and I have no sequins or Zig Clean Color Brush markers either
I did join the Copic parade and I still like using them

I lived thru' the '80s, so the neon trend at the moment's kinda setting my teeth on edge...

Cricut, Copics, sequins, feather images, cutesy farm and woodland animals, owls come to mind right off the bat. I have made enough purchasing mistakes over the years that I know what I will use or not use and which stamps fit in my style or not. Still fun to look at the new stuff, though, just not buy.

I agree with you , Mary Beth - lots of fun to look at things that aren't our style, just no need to jump in and buy any of it... I'm really happy to be in the space I'm in right now, where I know what I'll use and what I won't. I've never known (or cared, particularly) what was trendy or a fad or whatever, so I'm still not sure what I may/may not have missed - how clueless am I?!?! I know I'm in my own little world, but it's okay - they know me here... ;)

I usually only know what's trending when all of my favorite blogs start putting waves and anchors on everything lol or I try to buy a 6 x 6 pack of paper and everything has a map or nautical print...grrr.

I'm not big on fads and some things I don't think of as fads when they seem to pass the test of time like Copics or die cutting.

The fads I didn't or won't join are some already listed a few more:

sequins & pom-poms
banners
feathers
foil laminating (that's retro for me as we did it years ago)
paper dolls
big-eyed images
headless images

Hee hee don't check out today's challenge... (I love sequins and I have not done a challenge in a while and was lured in with sequins)

As for fads I never got into Stapling things on my cards/scrapbook pages. And a boat load of techniques due to I love CAS.

Funny you should say that, Paula - the challenge was what spurred the thought! I agree with the "technique" thing - they're lovely to look at, but I don't feel the need to try most of them - too time-consuming and I'm a pretty simple cardmaker...

I didn't know know buttons were a trend! Hahahaha! I thought they were a mainstay, classic, use forever item. I must say I use them less now, but will continue to use them. Even Got some free during SU's SAB ;~}

Sequins-did buy one pkg. the in-color stars from SU. They are so cute. Sequins will probably go out before I get around to using them!

Feather images
Pom pons
Strands of sequins
I don't even know what foiling is!
Copics until last Christmas-haven't used them much
Cricut
Sewing
Enamel dots
Banner mania-I make some banner cards...I like banners, but they seem to be on every card I see!
Distress inks

Fads that I am glad I didn't buy into:
1. Markers of any kind... Copics, Nori...etc...
2. Julie Nutting rubberstamps
3. Misti Tool- I have a Stamp Positioner that I've had since 32 yrs of stamping and it does just as good.
4. The whole foiling thing- "What's Old Is New Again" right... I have the old foiling hot pen from 15 yrs ago and still have a roll of the small foil from Hero Arts... Oh, get a bottle of "Toner Powder" and use that... Saw the video over on Youtube from a gal over in the UK and how she used it... I bought a bottle and used it with a pack of the foil on my images...Works great.
5. Ranger's "Color Of The Month" colors (New Distress colors"
6. The whole "Mixed Media" thing.
7. Don't have to have all The Washi that has to be Washi tapes, a lot of Washi snobs out there and I don't buy into it. I like Washi too, but also buy a lot of the cheap washi and whatever else decorative tapes.
8 Buttons
9. Glitters

I am definitely out of the loop. I had to Google Julie Nutting stamps to see what they were . They are stamped Paper dolls with stamps of outfits to dress them

I skipped Washi tape too

I'm not sure I ever really know what's trendy... I haven't stamped for that long, so I wasn't around for a lot of them (like stickers and fiber). And what one person considers a "fad," another considers a standard supply (markers for example). But I never got into:

Sequins
Dies for a lot of stamps (never did production work, so I could fussy cut instead)
Foiling! (I only recently realized that was a current trend)
Staples (not sure it was ever all that popular - I think many people found it challenging to use them)
Sewing (not good on it with fabric, wouldn't be good with paper either!)
Glitter (can't use it without getting it in my eyes - yuck

Stamp trends are a little trickier to call for me. Is it a trend or just something someone likes? Well, yeah, owls... feathers... cupcakes.... all have recently had their day in the sun.

But if you generally already liked owls and feathers, etc., then for you it isn't really a trend - you just happen to luck out in finding a lot of products and stamps with something you love. I'd never use a "theme" because it was trendy if I didn't already like it (I'd use owls, feathers, birds, nautical ... not cupcakes).

I find this thread really interesting - an education on trends.

I have resisted owls, stickers, various tools, border punches, (have about 3) feathers, Copics and Washi tape to name a few. I did get buttons, but I use them with needlework finishing. I already had a sewing machine, ribbons and fibers before I started paper crafting and am using my sequins from the 1960's!

I am getting more cynical and cheap and figure that half of new stuff is just put there so we will spend more money.

Hmmm:

Staples
Sewing on Cards
Never liked owls
Over the top vintage where you don't even recognize what the item used to be.
Not into neon colors etiher.

I'm sure there's more, but those bugged me the most.

I happily incorporate new ideas/fads into my cardmaking. If I like it, I like it. And those who receive my cards don't know whether these elements are in or out.

Fads I've passed on:
- Foiling - very pretty, but I don't want any new equipment.
- Stapling - don't care for the effect
- Mustaches - just no
- Copics - don't enjoy coloring that much
- Stickles
- Prima Flowers - I can die cut or punch my own flowers when needed
- Zig Water Color Markers - I must resist because I have too many coloring media already

Fads I will continue:
- Feathers - nice alternative to vines/flowers as focal point
- Watercoloring, including Distress Inks - so many options, artistic looking
- Sequins - something extra that is flat to mail
- Sunshine, rainbows, clouds - they make me happy and can be used for a lot of occasions

Fads I thought I would like/incorporate more:
- Hexagons
- Cricut - anyone interested in a machine/cartridges?
- Ribbon - I have a few go-tos, but why did I buy so much of this stuff?

I guess I missed out or skipped a lot of the fads. I never did:

brads and eyelets
feathers
moustaches
steampunk
foil
sewing
pearls
handmade/mulberry papers
"heavy" cards and pages
victorian style
buttons

Wow, mob - you dodged a lot of things that were "big!"

I saw this revived thread - from a year ago - in General Stamping. I got a kick out of the OP ... lots of those things were before my (stamping) time.

Phantom,

You wouldn't know I missed or skipped anything by the size of my stash LOL! I've got so much stuff, I'll never use it all up. I've mostly missed out because I'm not able to shop the way I used to. Being out of work has cramped my style. But, it's been a good thing to have to be more critical in my few purchases.

Sorry that you were forced to be frugal - but I agree... it can be a good thing to be more selective: Less likely to fall into fads and impulse purchases, or end up with more than you need . (There's a reason I said "dodged" instead of missed out on!)

Yikes!! I feel like I did not miss many fads.
Probably buttons and sewing and sequins.
Ooh I did avoid the mustaches
No idea what the stapling trend was.
Julie Nutting. Thought I'd give one a try finally but it was not in stock so that saved me lol

Although these darn shaker cards might soften my resolve on sequins - on the bright side those are pretty cheap where I live - at least last I checked which was...err ... wait 10 years back LOL

Almost skipped glitter but got pulled in to buy at least one pack of Prima glitter. still unopened.

Did not avoid Washi tapes - got a lot but they just don't match with anything. But I am hoping...

I did avoid feathers except I just recently got a feather die LOL but hopefully one doesn't count, right?

Got the copics, got sucked in by the zig brush pens and foiling. Waiting for the stuff to arrive.

I'm no good at this post LOL.

I wish I had resisted Tim Holtz more. I have all the alcohol inks, and hate them. Never use the crackle paints either. And on and on. But one trend that's actually not a trend but that I wish I had resisted is die cutting machines and dies. Really, I never should have invested money in all these dies and the Tim Holtz machine. Not that they don't work marvelously- but they are not my style at all and I don't know what I was thinking! Ooh, a big sale coupon, gotta go shop!! Ridiculous, they sit dusty on the shelf, never use them.

Ooh I happily missed the Alcohol inks but got sucked into distress paints. Sigh. Dies I don't mind - I use them, I am just too lazy to die cut so now I am going to be organizing them properly and make it a point to use them.

Am I the only one who doesn't like craft paper? ;)
It reminds me of brown grocery bags.

Just thought of another one - dew drops. I made a ton of these in different colors and there is no way I can ever use them up. They need to go the same place as eyelets : )

Said I would never buy a copic, but now have over 200; love them; color all the time. I had forgotten how much I liked coloring, because I had tried with colored pencils (which I don't care for & have lots of that I never use). But got sucked in on Tim Holtz distress inks, have lots; hate them & almost never use. Almost never use my Cricut, buttons, all those little wood embellishments (too thick to mail), tons of stickers!!! (never seem to have the right thing in the right color). Missed (& glad of it): Steampunk, foil, mulberry papers, mustaches.

I'm not into feathers or mustaches or owls. I purchased a small bag of feathers at JoAnn's to use for embellishments when a challenge calls for them. Got them on sale for a couple bucks. No big investment here. I have a couple of Joleens stickers of owls in case I need them for a challenge, got them on sale too. Wish I had missed the clay thing. I have a bit of that and some tools and I just cannot seem to make it work. I need to clean out that drawer as I think the clay is hard as a rock now! Should have skipped watercolor crayons too. Glitter only for shaker cards. I still love all my brads, rhinestones, candy dots, eyelets, etc. I don't use them all the time, but love having them around when I need them. Never got into the Distress Inks either. Probably the worst purchase I have ever made was my Bind It All. I just HAD to have it, so DH got it for me for Xmas one year and I bought all the binding strips and stuff and have not used it once!! It still sits on my shelf in it's case and don't want to get rid of it and hurt his feelings. Maybe someday I'll use it...............................

Didn't miss all of this...
Sewing on Cards
Steampunk
Grunge
HUGE embellishments that can't be mailed
Feathers
Banners

That said, on "occasion" I do use a feather, or banner or fake sewing - just don't use them on every single thing I do. I think it is overuse, not use, that makes people cringe.

Your comment about mustaches -- just no cracked me up! Never was my thing either and I just didn't get it. Different strokes for different folks!

While I don't think that some of the things mentioned can be considered fads (e.g. mixed media, Copics, glitter) - since they have all been around and have been used for years - I am glad that I never was into torn edges. I tried it, didn't like it, and never did it again. Now when I see something with torn edges, it looks very dated to me.

I agree with Jeanette... it's really hard to call some of these things "fads."

I think a lot of these items are things that had been around in other places for some time, but just became popular with card makers/papercrafting, so it's new to that realm of hobbyist.

And I think it also depends on when you start stamping. When I started, there were buttons, Prima-like flowers, pearls and ribbons everywhere. To me, being new to the whole process, those were standard card making embellishments. Were they a fad? I have no way of knowing!

I have to say, I did use a lot of things that I gave up because they were no longer "me," and I'm not so sure I used them because they were trendy but probably because I thought they were just de rigueur for cards (dewdrops, buttons, ribbons, flowers, glitter, brads, eyelets, pearls, rhinestones, punches).

The "fads" to me are the foil, staples, sequins, enamel dots... things that were newly common to card making after I had been in it for awhile.

I guess I'm just saying that I think the idea of what's a fad can be really subjective and I think it has to do with when you start in the hobby.

I agree with The original post. I skipped all the fads and I'm better for it.

I like simplicity on my cards, and as they say-- Less is More.
