I find tons of fonts that I love on Pinterest but am so gun-shy about downloading anything that is "free". Have you ever downloaded any free fonts? If so, did you have problems?
Do you know of any sites that are safe to download fonts or if you buy fonts, where do you buy them and is the downloading easy?
As I try to get into some more digital designing, I find I want different fonts than I have.
Any experience or advice you can give me will be most appreciated!
I have literally downloaded hundreds (they aren't all installed).
Have used them frequently for scrapbooking titles and journaling.
two top sites I've downloaded from are: dafont.com 1001 Free Fonts - Download Free Fonts
I've downloaded fromboth sites mentioned plus another but can't remember the name at the moment. Some are zipped so you just need to unzip and save in the fonts folder.
I've never paid for a font, and only downloaded from "free" sites. Like a previous poster said, dafont.com is a great place to get fonts. Never had a problem and I've gotten lots of fonts there.
Also, I've found quite a few when blog hopping, and folks post the links for free fonts on their blogs.
Having different fonts has expanded my options for cardmaking. I type lots of outside and inside sentiments now, and don't have to worry about having the right stamps for every occasion.

Thank you all! My problem is that I have literally 500+ sentiment fonts and am always in the market for more. It just makes sense for me to start making my own with all the fabulous quotes out there and I want the fonts to that reason, as well as for digital stamping.
I really appreciate your responses and am on my way to getting font happy!
Like the other posters, Dafont, and 1001 fonts/ Also, Urban Fonts,FontspacePickafont,Iconian Fonts, a fantastic site for dingbat & icon fonts,Dingbat Depot, another great Dingbat resource,Fontpalace.com I use all these, never had any problems from the sites.
Also, a great program for keeping all your fonts manageable is either Font Fitting Room, or Printers apprentice. There are free trial versions, then buyable ones. they allow you to see all the fonts on your pc, keyboard maps, how your text will look typed out etc. Its wiser not to install hundreds of fonts into the Windows fonts folder, as every program, as well as the startup, has to load all those fonts, so you will slow your pc down. Better to keep them in a separate folder, and just install to the fonts folder as needed.
I love the free fonts and since getting my silhouette have been told of fonts that work well and how to use to make your own word cut outs. Thanks for the advise about how to store and just load when using, never thought about that.
I have literally thousands of fonts - all downloaded from free sites. I like font squirrel because they have a big selection of free commercial use fonts. I started way back in the day when the first cutting machines came out and I got my Craft Robo, so I've been collecting for about 10 years. I've probably downloaded from every site that's been mentioned here and have never ever had a problem.
I've purchased many fonts from scrapnfonts.com and letteringdelights.com. Never had an issue, got many for free there, they are in my account library for reference, and I use them for digital work as well as printing out sentiments for cards. There are also alphabets called "doodlebats" which use the letters to represent symbols. Those are great fun and work well for digi scrapping as well as card making. Those doodlebats can be hand colored once you make them the right size for your purposes. I've printed them out on cardstock and made card fronts without having to purchase such stamps. As a retired educator, I've also purchased a CD or 2 from those sites. Beyond those uses, there are many digitals to cut on the various machines. I've not had an issue with either company. Their graphics are excellent; I've designed toppers for candy bags and other gift items donated for a craft show. There is a sale for Lettering Delights going on now; most products are $1.00 or less and there's another promotion depending on how much you purchase. Diane
Ailhelen, thats why I love Dingbat fonts. Many of them can be used to create embellishments & icons for cardmaking/scrapbooking. If you have a silhouette, then this link might be useful: Fonts for cutting with a silhouette This blog has a huge list of links to great fonts that cut well.

Love ya! thats what I love about here. people always sharing. Off to check it out. thanks so so much
Thanks so much for the tip about storing fonts. I didn't know this and would have freaked if my machine started slowing down. That is going to save me so much frustration!
I have used Font Squirrel and DaFont for free fonts without a problem. Just be sure to check the licenses, if you plan on using the fonts for commercial projects -- some of the fonts on DaFont are only free for personal use.
I also purchase fonts from MyFonts and FontShop. You can find free fonts on both of these sites, if you hunt around a little. You will need to create an account to download free fonts.
when I have downloaded fonts in the past, I have saved them to a new folder and then used a programme called amp font viewer which allows you to temporarily install the font you want onto your computer to use. this way you don't slow your computer down by saving the fonts into your fonts folder.
like others, I have used dafonts and 1001 fonts many times without problem (I have Mac). I created a table of boxes in Word and I type the same phrase in each box - a combo of upper/lower case/numbers and the font name. I have these sheets printed out and in my reference binder. It makes it so much easier to flip through 5 pages when I am trying to decide on which font fits the mood of my card best. But I want to check out the programs mentioned above to manage/view all the fonts i have.
I am so excited about all this info on fonts. I've always been afraid to download the free ones because my computer always warns me that they could have viruses. I'm especially glad to know about loading the fonts to a separate folder so they don't slow down my computer. You guys are great - It's so much fun to have friends who share their expertise
I would like to remove many of the fonts from my fonts folder, since I don't use at least 80 percent of them. Does one of the font managers mentioned above allow me to move them out of my fonts folder and put them in a different folder so that I can call on them later if I want?
And has anyone had any luck getting rid of all the dozens of MS default fonts for all the Asian languages I'll never use? (Yes, there's 72 fonts...all Chinese, Japanese, Cambodian, Korean, etc...multiples of each...and they don't even appear properly in documents...I assume they're web-use fonts??) I'd love to have Office only show under 100 fonts to choose from.
I had trouble with zip files from dafont. When I opened one and added it to my existing fonts it seemed to take over and had the same font showed multiple times. When I tried to delete them, after the first few it wouldn't let me do any more. Like fionna I seem to need some advice on deleting fonts from my Windows laptop. TIA
This page may help you with moving fonts around. This one may also be useful.
Thanks. I did do some poking around. Some of the fonts can't be deleted. It says they're protected or something. I did go and restore fonts to the default settings. I have also checked the box that says something like "only show fonts associated with your computer settings." I thought that must mean that you wouldn't see the foreign language fonts but they are still there. I guess I'll just have to live with it for now. Oh, the joys of technology.
I use to run a font newsletter & board. I have over 100,000+ fonts, lol. Now, I just use dafont & fontspace now.
You will want a good font organizer. That way you can install when needed but still be able to look at your collection. Too many fonts on your computer will bog down your system.
You will probably find those protected fonts are ones which Windows needs to run properly. The foreign language ones are probably the same. Stops people breaking their o/s by uninstalling them, lol.
Can you recommend a good font organizer for a PC? Are any of them free? What should I be looking for in a font organizer? If this is too much off-topic, I can start another thread or contact you by PM.
Two that spring to mind- The Printers Apprentice, and Font Fitting Room. Both are available as a free trial version, then you can upgrade if you like it.Both are really good programmes, it comes down to which one you prefer, is all.

My favorite is AmpFont. The one Catrick just mentioned
All of them are free. No bad things. I have known Gizmo for 20 years. I was a contributor to the freeware newsgroup back in the day and did reviews. Hope that helps.
