Default Need sentiment opinion, please.

I usually put some type of sentiment on the front of my cards, but I see a lot of handmade cards that do not have an outside sentiment - just something inside.

I'm getting ready to make my Valentine cards and have come up with a design I like. It would be a little crowded to put "Happy Valentine's Day" on the front, and also then I would be stumped about what to put inside.

If I don't put a sentiment on the front of the card, to me it looks vaguely "unfinished" somehow.

So, what's the verdict on a Valentine card? Would you make one with no sentiment on the outside?

I make a lot of cards without outside sentiments. It depends on the design & a lot of times it isn't necessary. Feel free to leave it off.

Thanks, Paula. I tend to get in a rut, and always do things the same way I've always done them.

Bugga, I feel your predicament! I find Valentine's Day cards awkward sometimes too, for that very reason. But in thinking about it right now, I don't think it is necessary to put the sentiment outside especially if there are hearts, a little bling, some 'pretties' if you will. And then as you say, it can go inside I think you may have helped me think through this too, thank you!

Thanks, Joan and Cardmaker2! And yes, I don't have a problem with something like Happy Birthday. There are lots of sentiments that can go inside of those.

With the Valentines, I'm sending them to friends and family members, so just want a simple Happy Valentine's Day on the inside, nothing romantic or mushy.

I'll post my first card when I get it done.

I often leave sentiments off. After I have stamped and coloured and added bits and pieces I often find the card look just right with nothing on the front ad can save what I have to say for the inside. Go for it!

Most of my valentine's day cards have no sentiment on the front, especially those I make for friends. I have lots of "Happy Valentine's Day" stamps in various fonts and sizes and I use those inside. Plus no sentiment on the front gives me more room for hearts or other valentine stamps!

I make quite a few cards without sentiments on the outside as I sometimes just can't figure out where to put one or I don't have a sentiment stamp that is just the right size - but I certainly understand what you mean & I often WISH I could have added a sentiment somewhere to "finish" the card. If you feel your Valentine's Day card really needs a sentiment, do you have a tiny stamp that you could stamp on your main panel without needing to add a separate panel a bit like THIS ONE in my Gallery? Or perhaps diecut a small heart and stamp a sentiment on the heart or maybe XOXO and glue that on somewhere? Hope this helps

Jocelyn, love the XOXO idea! Thank you! That will work perfectly with my design.

Annette...so many cards are stunning without a sentiment on the front. I too struggle with a card if I'm making it without a sentiment on the front. So glad I'm not alone.

I used to make about 90% of mine without sentiments in the front, but when my sister sold cards for me, she said that those with sentiments sold better. Over the years I've probably swung in the other direction and now must of mine do, but I think that when you're happy with the card, it doesn't matter whether it does or doesn't have a sentiment on the front.

Sabrina brings up a good point ... people buying cards (at least the grand total of the two I allowed friends to pay for LOL) always look for an outer sentiment and either ask what the card is for or skip it completely.

However, since I currently do not make cards to sell, I let the creative process take the lead. I am also trying to build a stash so designs that are useful for multiple reasons will not have any sentiment until actually being used.

BTW, I also love the xoxo idea!

Fun topic

Your card is so sweet and adorable - I it. Really love the heart balloon too - that's a fantastic idea. I think that little sentiment panel just finishes it off perfectly and I'm glad that you are happy with your card now.

Your card is great -

Often I don't put sentiments on cards because several of my family/friends mat and frame my cards. Also, I make cards with no specific occasion in mind and then when I pull them out to send, I can add a sentiment if needed.

just wanted to share, I love using hearts all year and I make thank yous for our library to send out when they get donations, etc. I found a stamp that says
Thank you from the bottom of my heart @ h. lobby, and now I can use hearts all year from time to time for those cards.
I have another stamp (that I created and had mfg.) that says When I think of you it makes my heart smile.............I use that for thinking of you cards with hearts.

I love the look of cards with no sentiment on the front! I agree, it can be tough to let the outside say the major message - they you really are obligated to write a little note inside, right?

A card without the sentiment on the front really looks to me more like a little piece of art and I love it - don't hesitate!

you could go with love, amour, always, be mine or something similar on the outside and then the 'happy valentine's day' sentiment on the inside

Dont forget you can use those small font "wishing you..." or "sending..." Stamps on front and the larger sentiment inside. I started doing that and love the look. Gives more room for the outside design without clutter.

I do both and in the end it has saved me when I need a Sympathy, Retirement, Get Well etc. card. I guess you could say I keep bland/generic cards so I can use for all needs.

I need to make more cards without a sentiment on the front to keep on hand for occasions when I don't have time to make one.

I have in the past resorted to "peeling" the piece with the sentiment, like Happy Birthday, off the card and replacing it with something else, lol.

A lot of my cards are blank for exactly that reason. I can use them for any occasion and then find a sentiment that works for the inside. However, if I planned to sell the cards, I would put a sentiment on the front.

I do it both ways---or not at all. It totally depends on what works with the design. I consider cards art work, so if a sentiment/greeting works with the layout, then I will put one on, otherwise I will put it on the inside, or not!

If I'm doing a real "involved" card I generally do not do a sentiment on the front. I feel like then they can "frame" it if they want and use it for home dcor.
