Last night I couldn't sleep, and my mind turned to what it usually does, stamping. I got to thinking about all the trends, tools, and embellishments over the past 25+ years of my stamping jouney, and wondered what ever happed to some of those. I made a list of all the things that were once so popular in card making, and now you rarely see. If you can think of any more, feel free to add. Here is my stroll through what I call the stamping graveyard:
mulberry paper
velum
glossy card stock
crimpers
rainbow ink pads
stickers
slides
paper clips
staples
photo corners
background stamps
8.5x11 dp
handmade paper
embossing powder (You embossed everything)
decorative edge scissors
tea bag folding
quilling
pressed flowers
solid stamps
metal stencils
tea dying
marbled paper
webbing spray (I still have 2 cans!)
chalk
corner punches
scented cards
I think if you wait long enough a lot of it comes back around. I see all these a lot:
vellum
glossy cs
embossing powder
quilling
solid stamps
chalk
And Tim Holtz and Stampin Up have reintroduced the staplers...
I would have added fibers to the list...but they're coming back too.
What I find interesting is that the embossing paste that is so popular nowdays was brought out by Dreamweaver (one of the big makers of the brass stencils) to use with their stencils. Another way for us to use those brass stencils.
One thing that I do see is that much of what went "out" comes back "in", just used in a different way.
Let's see - I still use embossing powder, background stamps, metal stencils (for zentangling though - it's hard to even think about how much we used to emboss with them) so I guess I will have to add light box to your list!
I have a flat light table I use now, but remember that bulky light box we used for embossing? Gah - everything took up so much room!
I have and still use most of what's in your graveyard! I even have marbled vellum! Not scented cards, which I never purchased, and I never did quilling or tea bag folding. Everything else is still there and used but, as someone already said, in different ways. I'm influenced by trends in materials because I don't like doing the same thing over and over and love learning new techniques. But I resist trends in style that conflict with my own inclination and taste, which don't change much over time. So pretty much everything I bought ten years ago or more still appears on my projects.
Fun list. Most of those are not in my graveyard yet.
I used photo corners on my sample card for the WT challenge today.
And embossing : I spill enough embossing powder that I keep a small hand-held pet vacuum cleaner up in my attic to tide me over in between when I am energetic enough to haul the big vacuum cleaner up.
Background stamps are my go-to stamps, I buy very little DP.
If I could find a cheap source of glossy cardstock I'd use it way more!
I agree on the mulberry paper and am guilty of that.
Love vellum!
I don't use brads much these days - and since I just knocked my container over when I'd finished my sample for the TLC this week I know exactly what a surfeit I have , since I had to sort them all back into their compartments.
Webbing spray I never had!
Chalks, yes, and I don't use them much.
Still use my corner punches. Never had scented cards, don't go for the artificial scent.
I wish my crimper worked - I'm pretty sure (when I see the results other people get) that mine must have been faulty from day 1.
Beads - I haven't used beads on my cards for a long time, so that's my personal contribution to your graveyard. And I rarely use my watercolour pencils - they were my first colouring medium.
I love background stamps. I just order 2 from Stampin Up recently. I did not know they were "out of date" Really???
But I have not used chalks, in years. They still look new. I bought a ton of different colored staples. Tried them once and hated them. Never again. I still keep eyelets "just in case".
Vellum and glossy paper, and embossing powder are fun to play with, still have those in my supplies.
How can you make a Christmas card without some glitter embossing powder???

The OP captured my life in one list! I have stuff from more than 15 years ago that seems too good to toss. I still emboss everything and use and love my bog box full of powders.
I recently threw out a load of punches, just too dated to look for a buyer. Did anyone mention wheels? I miss them but I may be the only one.

Why, Lidia? Any particular reason? I want to try those fluffy mulberry paper bears. Lol!
Hehe! For many years, I was in denial about being a clean and simple stamper - and I tried fuzzy things, torn edges, etc. I was terrible at it! Now I'm freeeee!!! No more fuzzy torn things!
Oooh! I got something for the graveyard... those fancy parchment paper/vellum pierced cards! The only ones I've seen (on screen) that I like are those from Jerri Kay (A Touch of Grace Blog).
There are items on that list that I never did try, some that have gone to my crafting graveyard (which means my kids inherited them when they were young) but there are a few on there that have either made a comeback with me or I never stopped using them. I've always used my corner punches and embossing powder, never stopped using those. Background stamps and solid stamps have made a comeback with me, in fact most of My Favorite Things background stamps are on my wishlist, along with some from SU. And I really enjoy stamping with solid stamps now that there are some decent dye ink pads available.
I hope that mulberry paper and decorative edged scissors stay buried permanently.

I was using stencils for awhile back in the late 1990s and early 2000's and had another stamper tell me that stencils were so 'out of date' and not 'real stamping'. Well, I am amazed by the number of stencils that I see being sold by so many of the big names in stamping. So, I agree, things do come back into style.

Hmmm. I think the only thing I don't have on Gram's list is the webbing spray.
I'm really hoping you all don't come up with a great reason to have it! LOL!
I never stopped using embossing powder. Or background stamps.
Mulberry paper! When I started I bought all sorts of mulberry paper. I finally just got rid of it all. Like Lydia, it's not really good with my CAS style.

No blog for me. My gallery chronicles my card-making successes and mishaps.
I love
Embossing powder especially white, gold, silver and black. Gives such a perfect finish to a stamped image and soooooo good for watercolouring.
Love vellum, even more so as people are doing vellum flowers. So soft
I love glossy card stock as its fantastic with alcohol inks squished all over it.
Love big background stamps.
Rainbow stamp pads, there are some brilliant ink pads out there with the multi colours or multi tones.
So much we see in craft goes through a cycle. I think it all depends on what the producers find they have left on the shelves and some very clever marketing to re introduce to us, the spenders. Look at fashion. How many of us say if we had kept what we wore as teenagers it would be in fashion now.
I love vellum! I don't think it has ever gone out of style. You just have to be creative in how you secure it to your card, since you can see any adhesive through it.
My friend went to India recently, and she knows how much I like to make cards. She brought back tons of handmade mulberry paper. I used it with my feather dies, and have to say they turned out pretty cute! (even if she thought they were leaves and not feathers!)

I also bought a ton of different colored staples and rarely used them. About a year ago I took them to work and I have to tell you it makes me happy to see the silly little staples. For some reason at work I appreciate all those colors.
I still have almost everything on that list except webbing spray, scented cards and quilling - and I still use them. I'm in charge of a Card Making group that meets every other week and I did a class on crimpers last month since so many had them and never used them. I did a search for crimpers in the gallery here and got lots of ideas and made a dozen cards showing the ladies different ways to use their crimpers and we were all excited about using them again. Did a second class using solid stamps and showed the kissing, rock & roll & thumping techniques. I really hate to get rid of stuff!
Wheels, bought them, never used them, same with stencils. Threw out the eyelets long time ago. Never got into the staple thing. Chalk, watercolor crayons/ pencils, fancy edged ruler and crimper. So if I haven't use these things in years why can't I bring myself to get rid of them? Hmmmmmm
I am still using all this stuff. I have always loved vintage and kitschy things, ROFL!
I think mulberry paper is pretty. I always need vellum and glossy cardstock. Crimpers rule. Ask any modeler to part with their crimper and they will cry.
Stickers! Stickers in the graveyard? How can that be? So says the girl who bought fifteen packs of stickers last week. Has a wish list a mile long.
Paper Clips- Need them for the Filofax craze. I am always using photo corners. Crazy about background stamps. Bought 8.5 x 11 paper two weeks ago.
Still make handmade paper. I am an art journaler.
Decorative edge scissors are making a comeback. We were having a discussion about that on 2Peas before it closed. We do think it will be a hot trend at January's CHA. That and fibers.
Love metal stencils, corner punches and chalk. I love polymer clay. I buy a lot of chalk. I scent my cards.

Krista, please show us your mulberry feathers. They must be gorgeous! [Lidia, there is still hope! ]

Thanks for your interest, but I gave the set of cards to my friend, so I can't post. I used the feather die from PaperTrey. The only thing I would do differently is sew (instead of glue) down the feathers down the center, to make a rib. This would have made my feathers look more feathery.
I think this same effect would work with fall leaves too.

*note to self to suggest a Mulberry paper challenge
Don't people make Tear Bears with Mulberry paper these days? I remember Michelle aka MilwaukeeMommy here on SCS making one. Just found it on her blog HERE - and wow, it was in 2010! Where does the time go?? I had a look at EBay and they still sell Tear Bears for putting on Scrapbooking pages so they must still be "in". I think they're pretty cute.
I STILL have Mulberry paper in my stash! And until recently, had the very early designer paper which came in A4 sheets here in Australia (that's a bit bigger than your American Quarto). Butt ugly in comparison to the plethora of paper you can get nowadays but I thought it was pretty awesome at the time. Lydia: can we have a mulberry paper challenge? ;) Japanese rice paper was also "in" years ago (in Australia at least) - and I only used it a few times. I still have it as it is so pretty but it doesn't serve any useful purpose :( Did you have that trend in the US?
And those decorative edged scissors - most of which never cut cleanly but I thought they were pretty cool at the time for making a scallop edge. Have photo corners - never used them. Eyelets - I have lots of eyelets but can't remember when I last used one. Anyone have any ideas because I just KNOW if I toss them, someone will find some creative way of using them and I will be very cheesed off?! At least they don't take up much room!
Funny how things come back like vellum and heat-embossing and stencilling - but what I really love is that when things come back into vogue, they are used in new and exciting ways. I used to use Embossing paste through stencils years ago to make Christmas cards and sprinkled find gold glitter on the images then removed the stencil and it looked gorgeous. And now, embossing paste is back!
Is Steampunk still in? I don't think I have come across a steampunk style card in ages.
