I'm still trying to figure out from your description how painting white/black over a coloured background with tape lines becomes the grout? Maybe I'm still too tired from a busy week, but it seems to me that the masked part is the grout, as in your great photos which I used to make a super-quick CAS card. MIX69 CAS Faux Tiles
Imagine doing the entire card front with the colored bg then laying the tape over it leaving gaps for the "grout." Then you paint the white or black over the tape and when you remove it, the white is evident only where the tape was not. The project Ky linked uses this method and the photos make it easier to picture!
Both methods give the tile look, but the tape is serving opposite purposes.
