Ready for a new Mix-Ability challenge?!! We hope you're having fun with these! Our goal is to make mixed media, easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it!
For this week's challenge, use the technique of reverse or mortise masking.
Usually when we mask an image, we're covering it up to fill in areas around it. In reverse masking (also called mortise masking), we want to fill in the area insidethe image, so we cover up the areas around it. Here's a quick video explaining how it's done.
You can focus your reverse mask on a large open area of a stamped image, or create a focused background area by using the negative area of a die cut as a mask.
Create a reverse mask for that area and fill it in with two or more of the following:
sponged or stippled ink
brayered paint or ink
stamped images
stenciling
sprays
Zentangling
Remember, for your project to truly qualify as mixed media, you need to use at least 2 different types of art media. You can click HERE for a list of supplies you could choose from. If you want to start these challenges in the pages of an art journal instead of a card, or on scrapbook pages, or on 3D items - please know - ANYTHING is welcome! We want you to learn and enjoy!
Please remember to put in the correct keyword (MIX68) when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos. Then come back to this thread and paste a link to the card in your gallery so we can all ooh and ahhh! Go forth and create!
This is so funny, Dina. When I was browsing the other afternoon for TLC ideas I was reading a great masking tutorial; it was the first time I'd ever seen it called mortice masking, so it caught my eye. And while it wasn't really suitable for my needs, I really wanted for my own fun to try reverse masking with a background stamp instead of sponging as I would more normally do. Now I have no excuse not to ;-). Thank you!!
I don't know why my mind struggled so much with this challenge. It's really straightforward and easy, but my brain wanted to make it hard. I smacked my muse and told her to stop being such a difficult drama queen, and managed to make this card.
MIX68 CAS Poppy Thanks
Not what I was thinking of, but since I can hardly keep my eyes open tonight, a quick CAS card is it from me for today.
But I did use not just one but two reverse masks!!
I'll be back ;-)
