Default Seniors and Michaels

Tuesdays used to be senior discount day in Michaels; so I asked about it at the register. The clerk said that now every day is senior day, and the 10% discount includes regular and sale priced items. I wouldn't have automatically gotten it if I didn't ask though - even though I am clearly a senior. When I got home I checked online : AARP Advantages Discount

Nothing was mentioned in the store that I needed an AARP card; so I take it the discount is being applied to any senior.

OK, since you can join AARP when you are 50, does that mean Michael's will allow anyone 50 or over to take the discount?

Most places, the senior discount kicks in when you are 55.

It does say "simply present your AARP card for the discount" so let's hope!

Well darn wouldn't you know the car broke down and now we are sharing for while so now I can't sneak over to Michaels. I hope anybody that uses or attempts to use the discount will let us know how it went.

Whoa, baby! I was debating whether to renew my membership, but that discount will easily pay for it over the year. I can't believe I missed that!

Default Michaels Senior Discount

What membership? I did have a Michaels card for a couple years that did not give me a discount, but they did send some extra promotions. They discontinued it last year. If there is a membership card for Michaels I have not seen any advertising for it. More info please!

I was at Michaels today and only bought 2 clearance items and one item 40% off...clerk at the checkout said the new policy is to offer seniors a 10% discount every day. Said to just remind clerk you are a senior or show your AARP card.

I was at Michaels in Langley BC Canada today, was going to ask if there was an everday seniors discount, but I didn't have to ask.
There was a very prominent sign by the cashiers that said 10% Seniors discount everyday on regular and sale prices.
That answers my own questions about if the discount was for Canadians too , and great news it is!!!!

Sorry for the confusion - I did mean the AARP membership. I think I had read about the Michael's discount in some of the AARP info, but I just kind of glanced over it. I assumed that it was only on regular-priced merchandise, and their stuff is on sale for more than 10% off so often, it wouldn't pay. But 10% off even sale items, that I can get behind

Thanks I didn't know this !!

In fact I have never asked for a Senior Discount at Michaels . I forget to ask most businesses .

I wonder if I can bring in my old receipts back to 1990 and get a recto active discount refund LOL

Only kidding --

I disagree with AARP politics so it's AMAC for me. I'll have to see if they have the same arrangement. I don't know why they couldn't just check your driver's license.

LOL Barbara Jay. This is a new thing for me too and I'll have to start paying closer attention. ;)

I think that's a great idea. Make sure you have lots of receipts, indicating your loyalty over the many years and try to go when there's a really long line. I'm sure they'll just give you a couple of bills just to get rid of you. Oh, and don't forget to borrow a cane!

I have shopped in the US Michaels for years and have never asked, either. I did get offered (without asking) the discount in the Langley store here in Canada tho. Must have looked particularly old that day!

I have a feeling that you will not have to use your AARP card, probably just your drivers license. I am from Canada but will be at the Bellingham Washington Michaels in a couple days and will check there. They allow us to use our Canadian Michaels coupons at this store even if they have different promotions, usually the sale dates are 1 day difference and we are allowed to use both US and Canadian coupons at the store as it is close to the border. I will report back on Friday about the seniors discount requirements.

I can't imagine that Michaels would make you join AARP to get a senior discount. I agree with Nancy that I don't like AARP politics and won't be joining. But I will be asking at the register for the discount! Thanks for this info, I, too, forget to ask for Senior discounts anywhere!

I guess it all depends on whether it's an AARP discount or a Michael's discount, kwim?

A little off topic, but did you know that Kroger offers a 10% senior discount to 55 and over? I just asked for it and they gave it to me no questions asked. Hmmm. Maybe I don't look as good as I feel.

You know, I think I'll be 65 (a long time away!) before I remember to check for this stuff! Haha... another ten years, and I'll have forgotten again ;) .

So what age do they give the discount in Canada? 55 or 65? If its 55, I'll have to take my husband shopping until I get to 55.

I was at Michaels yesterday and used a 40% coupon and asked if I was also able to use a senior discount and the associate only asked my age. I left one happy stamper. I don't belong to AARP since it is a political machine.

PLEASE check out AARP politics before you join them just to get a discount at Micheal's, because 10% off at Mike's is NOT worth it if you don't agree with AARP politics!!!!!

And YES you need this card for the seniors discount a drivers licence will not do. I work at Mike's for a year and a half and my manager refused all diver licences as per Corporate

YOU DEFINITELY DO NOT NEED TO JOIN AARP to get the discount. Just ask for the seniors discount and they will probably give it to you or you will have to show drivers license or some other proof. I asked for it yesterday and saved an extra 6.00 and everything was on sale already. Just make sure you always google for better then 10% discounts, today there is a 20% off sale and regular items on RetailmeNot and its good til Mar 27, so that would be better then the Seniors discount, and you can still use a 40% off coupon on 1 item at the same time. The more we save the more we can buy other items!

So upsetting that Michaels cannot have a uniform policy...the clerk at my Michaels said AARP or just say you're a senior. Different Michaels have different policies for accepting coupons also. UGH!

I just came from Michaels. I asked for a senior discount and the clerk said, "ok." No questions asked. I also had a paper coupon and my phone app. She took both 40% coupons, divided the order in two and rang up 2 transactions. What a sweetheart.

Michael's has a smart phone app. It contains the discount coupons as well as the weekly sales. Hobby Lobby and Joann also have one. When you check out, you show the cashier the coupon on your phone. Very handy.

I'm not familiar enough with AARP to know about their politics.....will have to look into that. But I did look on their site and the Michael's discount is specifically listed on there.

Soooooo......if Michael's "signed up" with AARP to offer this discount, then isn't Michael's guilty of their politics too?

My thought is that AARP is a business, for profit. Their members pay a fee to support them, and their politics. I think AARP probably solicited businesses who will offer a discount to members, and that Michael's does not pay AARP for this. Therefore, Michael's is probably not supporting AARP financially = politically.

You do not need to be a member of AARP to receive the Michaels 10% off Seniors discount. I am from Canada shop about once a week in Washington State and have never needed a AARP card for discounts in shops or restaurants, sometimes just need to show my Drivers License.

I was at the Michael's in Scottsdale, AZ this afternoon and asked for the Senior discount. She told me that it was only on Tuesday. I told her that there had been a change and it was every day. Manager came over and I told her about what I had read on this forum and she said she knew nothing about it. She was very nice and gave me the extra 10% but she honestly had no idea what I was talking about. Wonder if I should contact corporate or is it only in some areas of the country.

It sounds like they need to have a store standard, because our Michaels will not give anybody the senior discount without the AARP card. I also disagree with their politics and refuse to join. Hello, Hobby Lobby and local scrapping stores!
