Default Is anyone else "washi tape challenged?"

I love all colors and patterns of washi tape but when I go to make a card, I have the hardest time making it look good.

Any good websites out there for me to get some ideas????

Thanks.

The quality of the tape makes a HUGE difference in the ability to "make it look good". Some of it is very sheer, some very opaque, some very sticky and some hardly sticky at all, some matte, some very shiny, some textured, some smooth, some with saturated color, some with faded-looking colors.....and you can't tell until you buy it.
I bought the most expensive brand of black and white gingham, and could "make it look good" quite easily on cards on which I would otherwise have used gingham ribbon. The other spools I bought I just couldn't "make it look good", so I gave them to a child who loves crafty stuff.

Good luck,
Bahb

I've had washi tape since people first started talking about it here. I've decided it's just not my "thing" for cardmaking.

I googled, looked at examples, and just didn't like what I achieved with it. I found it kind of hard to work with. I don't like the "shabby" look with torn edges, so I always felt I had to measure and cut it. Now, if I need an accent, I just cut a strip of patterned paper instead.

I'm using up my rolls of tape to embellish the backs of my envelopes these days.

And, I think I'm about to feel the same way about the rolls and rolls of fancy ribbons I've accumulated. I seldom use them on my cards anymore, and have been using them to wrap packages. As the cost of postage keeps going up and up, the ribbons just add bulk and weight. I can achieve the same look with paper strips.

The only washi tape I own was bought on sale....like the other day I bought a pkg. of 4 rolls on clearance at Target for $1.20. I find it very useful for masking for one thing and since I paid so little for it, I don't mind using it for stuff like that!

I rarely use it as a design element, but I use it instead of sticky tape. I always have a roll of it with me as I work away at my desk. Very handy stuff.

On this particular card, I did use some Washi Tape as a design element, on the border. It is very pretty tape from Michaels....also purchased on clearance!

So there are times when I feel that it can be used as a design element...particularly if it is as pretty as the tape is on this card!

Pam, your card is beautiful. TFS

I'm not a big fan of washi tape. The only ones I seem to use are my black w/white dots and the red w/white dots. The rest I don't like once I got it on my card. I think I'll start using what I have like Bugga on envelopes. I won't buy it again.

I've seen some really neat cards made with it online, but not tried it myself. It's so expensive in the stores around here!

Instead, I purchased Kaisercraft's clear stamp set of decorative tape pieces. I thought they might look kind of fake since it's not the 'real' tape, but I love them! They're the cutest little accents instead of tape or ribbon and you can stamp in any color. They're a really nice alternative.

I can do fake stamped washi tape... but I can't do the real thing.

I don't like it. It is not sticky enough for me and it is too translucent...I much prefer the texture and body of ribbon. I have been mostly using the few rolls I have to hold chip bags closed..and really it is not strong enough for that job either.

I'm just avoiding it altogether. It'll be out of style eventually and I have enough patterned paper to accomplish the same thing. Some Washi tape reminds me of that pink hair tape, anyone remember that?

The tape strips and banners are being done to death lately, JMHO.

By the way, I've notice the Washi trend has spread to packing tape. There are all kinds of patterns on clear packing tape now. Also, many colors of duct tape.

Oooh, I do! I remember searching high and low for it and then eeking it out as it's so precious I used it to hold the ends of thread to the spools for my embroidery threads - honest - I'm not into pin curls ;)

I have not used Washi tape. I think it looks like my daughter's craft projects in first grade. I much prefer paper and ribbon.

Maybe you should look at it in a new way...I had a hard time trying to figure out what to do with it too until I thought of it like DSP. Here is the card I came up with:

A Work of Heart: Washi Friday & Storage Ideas

I put washi tape over a small scrap of paper and then used it to paper piece the coffee cup.

I have a son who found my clothespin chip bag closure so tacky. He insisted "chip clips" were the only thing to use. To appease him I used a Sharpie marker and wrote "CHIP CLIP" on a couple of clothespins that I use on my bags

I have a couple of rolls of washi tape that were included in a kit I ordered, but I haven't used it. I, too, prefer to use scraps of beautiful papers I've collected and can't seem to toss.

I like to use it on the card inside. Cute pleated with ribbon. Love it! And so do the ladies in my Gilda class because it is forgiving!

Like everything else, it has its place. However, if it isn't for you, then skip it. I love having a variety of things to create with. Some I come back to over and over, others not so much. I have seen such cute things done with it, but don't have any ready made, but make my own when I feel the need for it. Have some great stamps that work well to stamp my own. That way they match my project perfectly! Here are a couple using tape I made (stamped tissue paper on double sided tape).

Thanks. Coming from you that's a real compliment! It is not my idea to use tissue and tape, but came from a site on how to make your own washi tape. You can use permanent tape (or repositional to make it more like real wash tape).

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't 'get it'! I'm a ribbon, or strip of Dp person too. I also find I tend to avoid the 'latest' trend-unless I really fall in love with something. Hence I never got into the birdcage/moustache/cupcake thing either. They just don't do it for me, although I see some gorgeous designs made by others with them. So I think thats the secret, if an element grabs you, what you do with it will look good, but if you struggle with it, you'll never be happy with what you achieve? Maybe.

At our marching band's most recent potluck dinner, some of the other moms and I noticed there weren't enough serving spoons for the dishes. So I dashed home to get some of mine. I also grabbed a roll of washi tape and wrapped small pieces of it around the handles of my spoons to personalize them. None of my spoons "disappeared" at the end of the dinner, and the washi tape left no sticky residue when I removed it.

I have used the washi tape on a few cards. It's just kind of "meh" for me. It's not an embellishment I'd want to use frequently, but I don't have any intense dislike for it, either.

Today's Hope You Can Cling To challenge is to create a background for a card using washi tape. Maybe it will inspire some of us. Here's the link to the challenge details: HYCCT1313 Sticking by Your Side Chat Thread by Tenia Sanders-Nelson at Splitcoaststampers

I've seen some really beautiful washi tapes and could easily become a collector (OK, hoarder) but have never really gotten the knack of using it. Like some others, I tend to prefer using a strip of cardstock. Washi tape just seems so flat when used on a card. I wonder if that contributes to my discomfort with using it. A strip of cardstock has a slight bit of depth -- not much, but is that enough to sway my opinion?

I figure I'll learn how to use it well about the time it becomes pass.

Marking the potluck spoons is a brilliant idea :-)

I like layering washi tape on pieces of card stock and then putting that behind punched out shapes like hearts or stars. Anything that I can make into rainbows is fun for me! Love all the designs so I am definiately a hoarder...I mean collector...of washi because looking at the colors make me happy. It's also good to use for pulling ink off the ink pad and rubbing on paper for a watercolor effect to stamp on top of. And to hold dies in place if you are cutting out an already stamped image and want to hold the die on top of the image. As with most things in stamping people can find alternatives to the "real" thing to use what they have on hand like DP or ribbon or stamping on medical paper tape instead using of washi tape.

I never liked it either until I started backing it with similar colored paper. I do not use much of it, just the postage stamps, clocks and gears for my steampunk designs.
I was using the plainer Washi tape to hold down dies until I got my magnetic platform. Now I don't need it for that either.
Hubby used some as a painting tape edge! LOL!

I find the tape very useful for lots of things like sticking things together. Some of those pinterest ideas were fun.
