Where I work, they don't like us spending too much time on the Internet on non-business related sites. They monitor activity, and I'm sure they notice if someone is visiting certain sites a little too often and spending a little too much time at them!

Some sites I used to be able to access are now blocked. We can't check webmail from work either. For now, I can access SCS and Yahoo Groups and a couple other favorite boards, but who knows for how much longer.

Your computer jock must have discovered that there was a lot of traffic to this site from your place of employment. He probably knows "who", too. How, I don't know. That uncertainty kept me off the net when I worked, except for legit stuff. Everybody surfed the net at work, including my boss. I just couldn't do it. Part of it was the fear of getting caught. Mostly, it was for personal reasons.

I understand that, but most of SCS surfing is/was done during my lunch and breaks...I don't get it! I guess I'll have to get used to the horrible withdrawl symptoms I've heard about

Where I work, they have filters on all the computers that have internet access. The only internet access you can get is what is put onto the
tool bar. They did this because too many employees were on the internet for non business related sites.

A friend of mine is head of the IT department at a big company. He was really bummed a few weeks ago, 'cause one of the employees was surfing porn related sites (they DO know who you are, BTW) and was warned off the record several time to stop. He really never did, and finally my friend had no choice but to report him... This is a big company and if the IT department of the corporate headquarters who overseas my friend's IT department ever got wind that they didn't catch something like that, my friend could lose his job... Anyway the guy ended up getting fired and my friend was really bummed over it...

My point (yes, yes, I have one) is that they do know who is surfing what sites and for how long... so if you were on SCS alot, it probably got filtered for that reason... sorry, it sucks :(

My IT hubby says you can't fool the IT department by going through Google. Google doesn't protect you in any way from being found out. Not to mention, it is just morally wrong to try to sneak around company-set limitations.

Good, Kim. I want to hear from more of you. I know many have said you're on here while at work. Some one or two have said you nearly lost your job over it (being here with SCS) and still you persist. Your boss doesn't care if you're looking at porn, talking to your sick whatever or on SCS - it's all the same to him/her. She/he probably thinks you don't have enough to do at work. Then it puts all in a position to ascertain if it's during your break or lunch, etc.
I'd like to hear from more of you.

That is a delusion...every site that you visit, whether you have directly typed in the URL on the address bar or searched it through Google or another search engine becomes part of your history and can be tracked.

I'm backing up what's already been posted. MY DH is one of those IT Manager guys (did someone say 'nerdy' before?! I'll debate that in his case  ) Anyway.....yes, they can tell EVERYWHERE you've been, and also see EVERY email. Doesn't matter if its been deleted or not.

At his previous job one of his required tasks was to observe activites at other terminals. In otherwords check out their travels on the internet & the email correspondence. He knew who was where they weren't suppose to be, and who was cheating on who, and who was having a fling. Do not disullision yourself that there is any privacy when you are connected to a main server at your workplace. I know this stinks, but the employers have to have some type of safeguard to make sure actual work is taking place for the paychecks they are distributing!

HeHeee! Whatever you call them doesn't bother me! I remember when I worked before and we were frustated at IT we called them 'geeks', but I know our accounting department was called some less than complimentary names as well.

Isn't it true though how we all have those little sterotypes in our head of what we think different folks should look like in their profession like truckdriver.....librarian.....computer 'jock'.....

My DH now works for a consulting firm that does IT work for other companies. The man that started the business is 6ft 9inches -- a big big man. Definitely not what I'd call a nerd/geek!

I don't have any internet access at work, so I'm without SCS all day - even during lunch!! In a way I'm kinda glad - no temptation to be here when I should be working - which wouldn't be right.

A little story about companies tracking web avtivity...My husband is an engineer who works on programs with tight security. A few years ago he realized that someone was accessing porn from his computer at night. (He can track better than some of the IT guys at his work). He reported it immeditaely to security and to IT. They set up a hidden camera and caught his boss using his computer for porn and doing unmentionable things. HIS BOSS!!!!! And he was too stupid to cover his tracks on the computer on top of it!!! GROSS!!!! Freaked my husband out. This guy was married with several kids at home and my DH had respected him. YUCK!!!!!!!

Hey guys, let's give Sue the benefit of the doubt and not make assumptions. She is probably talking about pop-ups that plague many internet users.
Nobody in our house has ever "invited" these sites into our computers, but they sure manage to create havoc.

OMG! True story - this happened to me! I have internet access at the office, with a fairly liberal policy. Can use during breaks and lunch for shopping, email, travel (check flts, etc). Anyhow - I was trying to find some options for playground equipment for our yard - new house, has nothing - anyhow...I did a search for residential playground equip and scrolled thru the options and clicked on an innocent looking thumbnail, and up pops this HIDEOUS porn site. I never moved so quick in my life! Nearly knocked over my water glass to exit off that site!!

I was looking around and even had to LOG OFF and log back on because I felt so DIRTY!! Anyhow - I called down to the IT dept because I wanted them to know that I truly was doing an innocent search and that is what came up and they already KNEW about it! He said I wouldn't believe how often that happens. He said most people exit out REAL FAST when that happens, but not always!

Moral to the story? I now search from my home computer!! LOL!

I'm really glad I'm retired and can visit whenever I want. When I worked we blocked sites for security and to protect the integrity of our computer system...ie. to keep the virus's, worms, etc. out. Oh, and also to keep employees from temptation. By the way there's no way to hide where you've been.

Guess I should have mentioned that it is OK to surf the web while we are waiting for more work to come in (data entry temp job) so I wasn't doing anything morally wrong. That remark offended me.

I sometimes struggle over the difference between morally wrong and ethically wrong. I think ethics refer to situations at work or at one's profession. First it was TV and now the internet.

I figured somebody would say I offended them. hehe Doesn't take much these days, does it? If you'll reread what I said, you'll see that I was referring to the idea of trying to access sites that are blocked by an employer by some other means. If you ask your IT dept. to grant you specific site access, they sometimes will, especially if you aren't abusing Internet privileges.

I think I'm jumping in on this conversation a little late...

I AM one of those IT geeks! Yes, just like others have said, nowadays any even remotely decent IT department will be able to, and already does, track every site you've visited and knows (or can easily trace down) who's been where, when. And yes, if your IT person wanted to, they could read each and every email you've sent from and received at work.

For the poster who mentioned accidentally hitting on a porn site and then hurrying off of it... unless your IT person is a total jerk, he/she understands and you'll never hear about things like that. It can't hurt you to call them up anyway and reassure them that it was a mistake.

For the record, though, no matter what the acceptable use is conveyed to you by your boss about being able to surf during lunches or downtime, most companies have internet and computer use policies that state that all computing equipment is for business-related use only. Period. Using your computer for other purposes could easily come back to haunt you.

Hi everyone! I was quite surprised by all the posts after I got home...thanks Love6Kids for defending me. I am a 1st grade school teacher and if you have, or ever HAVE been around 6 year olds, then you KNOW that all I have time for ARE my breaks!! LOL! My 'so called' 30 minute lunch only ends up being 15 due to various unforseen circumstances. Needless to say, they keep me pretty busy (and young, thank goodness!). As for the "less than desirable sites" I was referring to earlier...I was curious since they've blocked SCS what else they might have blocked. As you all know, you can basically type any topic into google and many questionable sites will be listed. Anyway, I guess I'll have to live with it Alas, now I may never get to see/be what comes after insane embellisher LOL! But on the bright side, I haven't tried the sites patstamps or....just kidding. Good night.

I was briefly in charge of our IS department at a previous job and the VP of Operations wanted a report showing the top 10 websites visited, who went there and how much time they spent at that site. He said he had asked the previous manager and she couldnt seem to get it done for him.

I had a programmer create a report (it took him all of about 30 minutes) and noticed that one of the sites was an xxx site and our controller was the one spending all the time there, about 10 hours a week.

As a side note, he was having an affair with the old IS manager.
