I have always liked this but have hesitated getting into the wheels. Someone has mentioned on their blog about unmounting and using clear mount cling foam from SU. I am wondering if I unmount it, will it be too long for an acrylic block? (I do have the biggest block in SU), so if it fits on the length of that I can order it.
If it doesn't fit on the block, you can use a plate from a Cuttlebug, or a stamp press, or anything that it will cling to that's large enough. I have a block from Close to My Heart that I use with all of my unmounted wheels, so that's another option, as well, if you have or can locate a CTMH consultant...

It will not fit. It's too long. People have also suggested that you can go to a hardware store and have them custom cut you a piece of acrylic. I think it's pretty cost effective!
I have the Apple Pie brand block, found it on GinaK Designs shop online. It is long enough and just BARELY wide enough for the wider "jumbo" wheels SU sells, but plenty wide for the regular size wheels. She sells it for $7.25, but you have to pay shipping of course.
I unmounted all my wheels after years of them going unused in a drawer, and valuable storage space being taken up by the bulky wheels plus the handles ( one regular, one large ) and all the little ink cartridges. I freed up THREE drawers by going unmounted with the wheels.
All the wheels measure about 7" long once you unmount them.
I have a very nice 2-1/2 x 8 inch block with finger indentations on the edges that is perfect for both standard and jumbo wheels when they are unmounted. Only problem is that I don't remember where I got it. I will go look and see if I can find it...
This might sound like a dumb question, but once you unmount the rubber from the wheel, how do you store the rubber portion that's now like a big, long stamp? I have lots of wheels that are taking up space and I find I don't use them because they're stuck in a bin out of the way...Maybe if I had a better system for the unmounted wheels I'd go back to using them again...Any suggestions?
I store mine in the DVD cases from SU. So far none of mine have been too long to fit in a case. I also bought an acrylic block at either ACMoore or Michaels. It measures 2 x 7 inches and all of my unmounted wheels fit it.
I put Tack It Over and Over on the back of them, and then store them on 8 x 10 acrylic sheets (originally intended to be replacement for the glass in picture frames, about $2 each at Lowe's) and I can stack many of them on top of each other in a drawer, and group them by theme.
I just piled all my unmounted wheels into an old clam shell style case from Stampin'Up. Don't remember what set used to be in it; but it's a longer case, the length is actually perfect for the unmounted wheels, bare rubber.
