Default Montreal Canada Visit Question

Hi Ladies--I have always gotten great advice in the past when I have posted questions about cities I am going to visit--so here I am again.

In two weeks, I am going to be in Montreal, Canada, to tag along for a convention and will be staying downtown. I will have time to explore on my own, but will need to use public transportation as we are not renting a car.

So--what do I need to make sure I/we see for touristy things? First time visit for me. Are there any restaurants anyone recommends that we need to be sure to eat at?

Now--stamping related! Are there any stores that I would be able to get to--either by walking downtown or with buses, taxi, etc.? I am hoping the weather will be nice to be able to walk around as much as I can.

Anything else anyone wants to recommend to me?

Thanks in advance for your help---Barb

Hi, I'm not sure how far away this place is.... write email/ them first or look through their online cattie first to get some ideas about the store.
Try here first to look for a supplier etc. or listings,'

Thanks--I am not sure I can tell if they have a brick and mortar store, but I will email them to see.

Hopefully you'll be able to take in a playoff game

We've only visited Montreal once. We did go up Mont Royal (mountain in the city, cool view). I'm from BC though, so it seemed like a hill to me!

Have fun!

OH! I almost forgot. I recently learned of this company because they are opening a store near my parents. It sounds like they are kind of like a Michaels. http://www.deserres.ca/en-CA/

Default Giving it a try...

Hi Barbara,
I live in the suburbs but since I see no replies I figure I could suggest a few things:-)
Since you'll probably be downtown, shopping on Ste. Catherine street is an option. It all connects underground too. If you get tired walking you can get around through the subway (we call it the metro).
Our festivals start a little later unfortunately but the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is wonderful (use to go often when I lived in the city)
The Planetarium just re-opened as well.
Sightseeing: I highly suggest a visit to Old Montreal..cobble stones...horse drawn carriages...cute bistro type restaurants where the staff are pretty welcoming to tourists. The Cathedral of course (where Celine Dion married) is pretty.
Not as familiar with restaurants in the downtown core as before but an old stand-by if you venture out on St. Laurent street: Shawartz Deli for our famous smoke meat sandwiches. Schwartz's - Montreal Hebrew Delicatessen - A Montreal Tradition Since 1928
A classic favourite here is the Poutine. Fries/Gravy/Melted Cheese Curds...really good depending where you go.
Since I don't venture into town much anymore here is a site that can give you some more ideas: Traveller | Tourism Montreal
At the hotel they can suggest the best restaurants walking distance got a lot of variety and varied price points.

The more important questions of stamping ..lol
We don't have many brick and mortar shops and the ones I know of are located in the suburbs. But in town we have Deserres. A "Big Box" type at Place Montreal Trust:

Place Montral Trust
1500, avenue McGill College (Qubec) H3A 3J5

You can see the website to see if it's worth a visit: Home | DeSerres

Here's hoping someone better informed can chime in..lol

Wishing you a great convention and bonne visite!!

Terri

Thanks Terri. Are there some stamp stores that are in the suburbs that you might recommend that I check out if I have time? Maybe the Metro is close by or I maybe can taxi.

Barbara,
Scrapbook Centrale is very popular but for sure is a Taxi ride. May be worth the trip if you need a fix

Scrapbook Centrale

Staff is bilingual so you can call if you have any questions

I live on the south shore so I don't go often (it's on the West Island)

There is a Michael's in Lasalle:
6855 Boul Newman
LASALLE, QC H8N 3E4
(514) 363-6161

You can take the Metro to Angrignon Station and take a bus the rest of the way.

Since the chain only opened here about a year ago not sure if they would have as much selection as in the US :(

Just in case you feel even more adventurous, my local scrapbook store is in LaPrairie (over the Champlain bridge):

Passion Collimagination

They just moved into a bigger space and very friendly staff:-)

Unfortunately, it's all I can think of at the moment but I hope it helps a little:-)

I was only in Montreal once, long ago -- the year the Queen Elizabeth Hotel opened! -- but I remember being impressed with the Montreal Botanical Gardens and the offerings of many French pastry shops. Enjoy!
