Recently I asked the question on one of the Cricut threads if anyone has a chart, formula, or method to determine how to create correctly sized envelopes for a variety of card sizes on the Cricut. There are a couple of cartridges that have envelopes. The Plantin SchoolBook is one of the cartridges that have two styles of envelopes. I have that cartridge and Design Studio.
If I could figure out a formula of how to re-size envelopes I would be thrilled. I have been trying variations for a few weeks, but I can't seem to be able to consistently make correctly sized envelopes for a variety of envelope sizes. I have looked on Youtube and there is a woman who says she finds it an easy process to do. She uses her Gypsy and guesses about how much bigger she needs to make the envelope. I just can't seem to get the hang of correctly guessing how to change the size of the envelopes. Does anyone have any advice?
While I can see how you might want to cut out some of those Cricut envelopes that have a decorative element to them, I would think it just simpler to get the We R Memory Keepers Envelope Punch Board for cutting basic envelopes. That is, if the manufacturer ever gets an ample supply of those suckers out to vendors!
The We R Memory Keepers envelope board is what really got me thinking about making envelopes. I am interested in buying one, but now hear we are looking at the end of May before more will be available. (sigh) I thought perhaps I could skip buying another tool.
Sewnmachine, I'm glad to hear you say that you couldn't really figure it out, either. I cut a bunch of test envelopes and I just could not come up with a good guess. Some were too big and some were too small. I know that Cricut wants you to cut the card and envelope, but I don't want to have to cut cards to their specifications. I would like to be able to say, ok my card is 4 by 8 1/2, put in a formula of some kind and have an envelope cut to fit my card. Seems like it would be simple......

Looks like it's not so simple, lol....WeR Memory Keepers messed up on the measurements on the chart on the first batch of their Envelope Punches! Not a huge deal in my book, as they have sent out corrected labels. But it lets you know that envelope measurements must be a fine science indeed.

I just don't think it's that easy with the Cricut. It made my head hurt trying to think about it with the Silhouette and it's much more flexible. Hopefully someone has tried it and has some insight for you.

If you have gypsy, could you just make a rectangle that 3.5x5.5 (Or any other size you would like) and put the envelope over it and resize it to be bigger than the card and then discard the rectangle and cut the envelope.

I don't have a Gypsy, but I do have Design Studio, and from what I can tell, I think they function in much the same way. As I have watched Gypsy videos it looks to me that all of the same features are on both, just that the Gypsy is handheld and the Design Studio is used on a computer.
When I was working to figure this all out, I tried your method and thought that would be the answer to my problem. For some reason it just would not work for me. I would have it looking perfect to my eyes, but when I cut the envelope it would not be the proper size. It looks like such a simple idea, but in reality I must be doing something wrong, because the envelopes still don't fit. By playing around and cutting many envelopes I can finally get a good fit and then save it. But all that work is only for one size card and I want to be able to make any size I want, without having to spend hours getting the right size. I just can't figure out why Provocraft has not created a chart to use with their cartridges?!?
Here's what I do in Design Studio or with my Gypsy:
First I measure my card, of course. Then I choose an envelope from a cartridge and put it on the virtual mat. Then I enlarge it, keeping the proportions balanced, until the rectangular part is just slightly bigger than my card. Since each box on the mat is an inch, it's very easy to do. It usually works very well.
