April 2013 Mission-CARDS FOR A CAUSE
2013 Cards for A Cause APRIL MISSION Stamp from the Heart!
ORGANIZATION BEING FEATURED: St. Baldricks Foundation
Description of Organization:Since its inception in 2000, St. Baldrick’s has raised approximately $150 million for the cause. Worldwide, 160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year and despite tremendous progress, cancer remains the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.
If you have been touched by a child with cancer you know the urgency for finding a cure. As childhood cancer research is severely underfunded it is essential that we take a stand for these young lives.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation awards more grants for childhood cancer research than any organization in the world, except the U.S. government. Expert researchers receive funds to search for new cures and less toxic treatments. Young researchers receive funds that will enable them to flourish into the leading experts of tomorrow. Experts at more than 200 institutions where kids are treated for cancer receive funds from a multi-million dollar cooperative research grant. This will help give kids everywhere the best hope for a cure and long, healthy lives. Here is a link to our website: www.stbaldricks.org

What a wonderful organization! I love all the smiling faces on the website I am guessing cards for children and teenagers?
Kathleen, have been involved with childhood cancer for several years, if fact, my wonderful husband shaved his head for St. Baldrick's last month. Several children were honored during the event... ages range from infants, young children, teens and some young adults.
I have been a member at SCS for a while, but I've never participated in a group, or posted anything for that matter, but Avis Matsuda at St. Baldrick's sent me a link to this thread and I would very much like to participate. My son, Michael, passed away on Nov. 1 of 2012. He did not have cancer but he was a three time shavee for St. Baldrick's and our family and many, many of his friends have continued to support the Foundation in memory of Michael. I would love to combine my love of card-making and my support of St. Baldrick's in such a fun and constructive way. Thanks for doing this.

My heartfelt sympathies to you as you mourn your sweet wonderful son. He had to be very special to shave three times for St. Baldrick's. Sending much love and hugs your way.
Wow! Thank you for another great opportunity to contribute to such a worthwhile cause! I'm so in! Am shooting for a minimum of twelve cards and will post when they go out.
Y'all have a lovely day!

First of all, thank you va.sunshine and caterinafmig for your kind words of sympathy!
I'm not sure how many cards folks usually contribute, but I was gonna try for one a day! And am I correct that Birthday, thank you, thinking of you, encouragement - are all suitable sentiments? Is it ok to leave inside of cards blank? And, one more question - I assume CAS and one- or two-layer cards are the best; wouldn't want to add anything that might increase the postage required to mail a card.
Let me know if I'm off base and thanks again for doing this for such a worthy cause.

you are very welcome!
Yes, you have all the details correct. One a day is very generous, thank you! I usually have a stock pile and always grab some of those to go to each months "cause". Please don't stress about the number of cards, many hands make light work! Together we can support St. Baldricks in a mighty way!
Any of the cards you mentioned are great. Yes, leave them blank on the inside. And, yes CAS is great too, makes it easier when mailing.
Thank you!

I have some questions about cards for this challenge. I have a Cricut machine. Is it okay to use it to make images for the cards like owls, cats etc. (Create A Critter cartridge) or teen/women cards (Forever Young cartridge)? Is it okay to use google eyes on the cards and other embellishments?
Do people use their Cricut machine or Cuttlebug to do these challenges or is this frowned upon?

Well, of course you can use your Cricut. Embellishments are fine, just like with any recipient, discretion should be used by the giver. I know the months we send to our troops we do not use glitter or sparkles for their protection.
thank you so much for your willingness to help, I hope you will join us each month!

This is the first time I've heard of Cards for a Cause, and I don't understand. Are the cards to be given to young cancer patients? Blank inside? Or are they for St. Baldrick's fund-raising? If they are for patients, will someone who knows them be adding a message inside? Thanks for your work in this worthy area for card-makers!

Having recently involved with a St. Baldrick's event, the cards can be sold at the event, auctioned off or given out to kids and their families. The ones I took to the event in Baltimore were blank inside. Hope that helps and thank you so much for your willingness to do this. St. Baldrick's truly is an amazing organization... my husband was a shavee one month ago and is hair is starting to grow back. :-)

thank you for your interest to help. Most months we leave the cards blank, they are given to patients, families, friends care givers, just about anyone. We give the cards with no expectations. There are details in my original post, some places do not want scripture or they are sending just thank yous or birthdays. Each month is different and you will have to stop back by each month to see who we are spotlighting and get the details. Please let me know if you have anymore questions.
thank again!
