MTC also has a forum with some of the top die cutting experts in the industry. They will help you find a good machine for your needs. I have said this a lot. Buying a die cutting machine is like buying a new car or sewing machine. You need to get the right one that fits your personality and crafting style. Some machines like the Zing for example can emboss leather. The Cameo is best for cutting intricate files. Some machines handle heavier cardstock better while other machines are made for thinner cardstock.
Do lots and lots of research. I know it's tempting to buy the most popular machine out at the moment. In theory you should with die cutters. A die cutter you will want to have a great helpful community that will guide you through learning your cutter. The worst is buying a cutter and no help community. It makes you feel like your alone in the woods. Don't ever buy a cutter because it's the most popular. A lot of Cricut users learned the hard way doing this when the Cricut didn't turn out to fit their needs due to limitations on the cartridges, no SVG support, etc...
The most popular cutters right now are- KNK Zing, Sizzix Eclips, Silhouette Cameo & Portrait, & Bosskut Gazelle. There are a couple of other machines. The above ones I listed have wonderful customer service, lots of helpful tutorials, & frequent updates on their software. These three things I find are critical in buying a die cutter.
I have a Silhouette Cameo, Bosskut Gazelle & my modified Cricut. My DH & I took one of my old Cricut's and tweaked it to make it run like one of the high end cutters. We are geeks. I really enjoy the technical aspects of die cutters.
Newbie needing advice: Best Cutting Machine and SVG program
! I never thought about changing out the step motor on a Graphtec machine. That is a brilliant idea. I keep modding out the Roland machines. DH did make a new blade housing for me to replace the sucky one that Silhouette should be ashamed of themselves for providing.
