Paperthreads has a comparison chart. There are a lot of cutters out there that will do what you want and more. I recommend MTC; it works with a quite a few cutters.

I also highly recommend the Silhouette (I have the Portrait), with the designer edition software you can easily import svg and other types of files. Or you can convert them with Inkscape for free and use the regular software that comes with the machine.

I have the Portrait as well. I love, love this machine. I have 3 cricut machines (Cricut Expressions,Cricut Expressions 2 and the Imagine) ...I have not used either of them since getting the Silhouette for Christmas.

MTC is a cutting software for various die cutting machines (excluding Cricut). Here's the link- Make the Cut!™ - Offical Website - Greatest cutter software yet created!

MTC also has a forum with some of the top die cutting experts in the industry. They will help you find a good machine for your needs. I have said this a lot. Buying a die cutting machine is like buying a new car or sewing machine. You need to get the right one that fits your personality and crafting style. Some machines like the Zing for example can emboss leather. The Cameo is best for cutting intricate files. Some machines handle heavier cardstock better while other machines are made for thinner cardstock.

Do lots and lots of research. I know it's tempting to buy the most popular machine out at the moment. In theory you should with die cutters. A die cutter you will want to have a great helpful community that will guide you through learning your cutter. The worst is buying a cutter and no help community. It makes you feel like your alone in the woods. Don't ever buy a cutter because it's the most popular. A lot of Cricut users learned the hard way doing this when the Cricut didn't turn out to fit their needs due to limitations on the cartridges, no SVG support, etc...

The most popular cutters right now are- KNK Zing, Sizzix Eclips, Silhouette Cameo & Portrait, & Bosskut Gazelle. There are a couple of other machines. The above ones I listed have wonderful customer service, lots of helpful tutorials, & frequent updates on their software. These three things I find are critical in buying a die cutter.

I have a Silhouette Cameo, Bosskut Gazelle & my modified Cricut. My DH & I took one of my old Cricut's and tweaked it to make it run like one of the high end cutters. We are geeks. I really enjoy the technical aspects of die cutters.

I've been contemplating swapping out the step motor and head assembly on my CraftRobo to see if I can get it to cut heavier materials. Yup, I'm a geek too...

I would love to hear how that works out. That is so cool! ! I never thought about changing out the step motor on a Graphtec machine. That is a brilliant idea. I keep modding out the Roland machines. DH did make a new blade housing for me to replace the sucky one that Silhouette should be ashamed of themselves for providing.

Silhouette Cameo all the way! I love mine. I also have a Cricut as well with the old software that isn't available anymore, but my Silhouette has way more features. The best part is the ability to print and cut.

Silhouette has some great deals on the Cameo and Portrait bundled with the software for SVGs. The sale just started today!

Here is the coupon code and info:

I need to wait until I have my Zing first. I don't want to mess with it until I have another machine to use if I bugger it up. ;)
