Default Postage question regarding cards

Can I mail a 5x7 card with just a regular stamp or will that require more postage?

Thanks for your help.

That size requires more postage. How much I don't know. Best bet would be to walk it into the post office unless someone here can answer with a postage chart for you.

I had mailed out some 5 x 7 cards that were a little bumpy, not much, and it was 90cents at Christmas before the price increase. There were 3 layers of cardstock all together (SU paper), so it was a little heavier than most.

A friend taught me how to do this. Go to USPS.com
Choose calculate a price
From there enter the information and at the bottom choose letter.
You may have to weigh it if it's heavier than a letter or has a lot of hard embellishments on it. Fair warning, the PO counted a BOW as a rigid object but when I figure myself I do not.
Click on the question mark next to letter to see the restrictions.
This helped me a lot and hope it helps you too.

If it weighs less than 3.5 ounces and is less than 1/4 inch thick it will require one first class stamp. 5x7 is not oversize. If it is non machine able it will need extra postage.

bound4london is correct about the size - the envelope can be up to 6-1/8" x 11 1/2" and 1/4 inch thick and still be only one first class stamp - but it needs to weigh 1 ounce or less.

If you really want to dig into it, this LINK takes you to the postage manual from the USPS - the chart on sizes. The quick reference chart is actually on pg 63. You'll notice a note about DMM 1.1.1.2 showing what requires the non-machinable surcharge of 20 cents - that is located HERE and is on the first page.

My post office actually gave me one of their measurement templates that has all the sizes and even a little slot to stick it through to make sure its 1/4 or less.

If your like me then just throw a postage stamp on it, shove it into the mailbox, and hope they mail it. I send out cards that a really puffy at times with "one" postage stamp and they still take it. Maybe they just don't care? That's okay with me!

Well then, you have been real lucky. I have put 2 stamps on cards and have had them returned for postage due. After the second time, I walk into the post office.

Lol! I guess they would rather send it on instead of send it, then send it back, and send it again! They have been known to be on island time (lazy) at the beach..... I have even gotten the music cards (store bought) from friends which have a gift card or money inside and say, Extra Postage may be Required with only one stamp. Who knows? (Just wait, next time I send a card it will be sent back asking for more postage.)

I lived in Hawaii for three years and the post office sure did scrutinized each and every PIF envelope and hand made card I brought in. Each and very person behind the counter was different. Most were very accommodating to my hobby but one was not. So much so that I was an Irritant to him, so I avoided him as much as I could.

They measured, weighed and question what was in each and every envelope. There was no laziness about it.

 I'm sorry! I didn't realize you lived in Hawaii. I was talking about here, as I live at the beach also. We are very much on "Island Time". Can't go to Walmart here during Summer, it takes forever to get out! Sorry I didn't mean it like that. Meant to be talking about where I live.... :(

The only problem with this is that sometimes the post office on the other end charges the excess postage to the recipient! I'm so paranoid about it that I usually put the extra postage on even if I think the card is ok without it.
