Default What would a kid do

if they didn't have access to a whole room of art & craft materials? We started on DD's valentine box yesterday, and used all sorts of things down there. I can't claim 100% originality - I was inspired by a couple of boxes I saw on pinterest - but it is hands down the best box we've ever done. And we've done some amazing ones. It's not done - we still have to add markings to it but it was drying.

Yet another reason to continually add to our stashes.

too cute! It is funny my kids sort of shyed away from being crafty *sigh* but I have been able to whip up a couple things quickly when they needed them but mostly functional *another big sigh*. We moved here too late (old) to get into the Valentine thing.

Yes, the cat. That's Bob. He doesn't normally lower himself to be there, but occasionally he will. He's quite snuggly this weekend - he just took a nice nap with me. Normally it's DH's cat, Dora, who is the helper kitty. She especially likes to sit on whatever paper I'm using.

Default Here is the finished project

The markings match her horse's markings, and she's thrilled with it.

I was just thinking this yesterday! What would my son do without all my stuff? He had to make a paper about boy scouting and you should have seen him! He had out like 10 or so punches and glue and my scrap box of card stock. He had a good time and his picture turned out cute. He was evening using a spritzer tool. I forgot to take a picture of it though.

My DD has used a lot of my craft supplies for her school projects--she even created a poster on global warming that got her to eventually be chosen as 1 out of 10 U.S. students to go to Denmark for a consensus on global warming.

My supplies have allowed her to be a lot more creative in many of her projects.

My married DD still comes home to use my stuff. She is planning to move in May and she was asking her DH "What am I going to do without my mom's stuff when we move?"

Tonight, one of her friends frm school came over for the first time. DD called her to ask if she wanted to bring her valentine cards over to fill them out and friend said she didn't have any. That made me sad. By the time she left, she had all of her valentines made and ready to go tomorrow. The girls spent an hour downstairs doing them - and I wasn't allowed. She was beaming when she showed her dad when he picked her up.

My boys (ages 8 and 10) often use my supplies. In fact my oldest recently had to do a project featuring a candy island and most of the residents were digital stamps that he colored and cut out. His teacher pointed to his as an example for the other kids. He was so proud.

I always wonder what non crafters do when their children have posters or projects to make. Do they go out and buy glitter, letters, cardstock, two sided tape, etc when the kid has to make something? My two have used a ton of my supplies for their projects.

Very cute box! she should be proud of it.

That's exactly what they do! My younger sister has 4 kids ages 3-14 and she doesn't do any crafts and calls me long distance in a panic every time they have a project - she lives in IL and I'm in NV. I've advised her on everything from paint for T-shirts, what to look for to build an Indian village scene [leather, suede, feathers, etc.], what type of glue to use, and too many others to mention!

I see parents all the time in the craft stores buying supplies for their kids to do projects. They always have this sticker shock look. I was in JoAnn's one day and this high school girl was buying items for a school project. The Mother was talking about the project. She spent over $50 dollars on supplies. Mom looked so ill about it.

Parents have also approached me in the stores asking me if I know about certain art supplies. That happened to me last week. They seem so relieved when I help.

I have friends come over and ask if I can help their kids with projects too. You don't have to ask me twice, lol. I love kids and creating things with them.

Another reason why I am happy to hand off coupons.

Last year my eldest had to do a 3D floor plan for Spanish and label it. The Spanish teacher actually told them where to ask for off cuts - there is a framing place in town that let them have mat board. What I will say is it depends on the school. Ours has a higher percentage of federally subsidized lunches than most so the staff seem to be more aware of costs for projects. We also have students living in million dollar homes so both extremes.

It's super cute!

I have rescued quite a few panicing parents with either advice or coupons to help out. I have also shooed them out of Michaels and sent them to the dollar store for most of the product lol!
