All of the common ones like Happy Birthday, With Sympathy, Thinking of You, Get Well, Happy Anniversary, Best Wishes are good to start out with....then you can expand to the holidays as they come along. Stampin' Up has a couple of sets that contain them all. Happy stamping!
I love to buy sentiment stamps in different fonts and sizes. The one I look for are: thank you, happy birthdate, thinking of you, hello, witness sympathy, etc. look for wording that you think you would use often. When I first started stamping, I found a set of small size font sayings-thank you, etc. I used them directly on the card, punched them out and attached the to the card front, punched them out and matted them, etc. I made, and am still using this set, many cards with these sentiment.
The punches were squares, circles and ovals in various sizes.
Sincere Salutations from SU has all the basics covered. I use it all the time, and with 3600+ items in the gallery, it looks like a lot of folks do. I also have had decent luck finding stamps in the $1 bin at Michael's that had basic sentiments.

The "Mixed Messages" set by Papertrey Ink is one of the first clear sets I bought. I loved it then, and I still use it frequently on my cards. If you are looking for an all around, all purpose sentiment set, I highly recommend it.
