Default fabric organization

I'm reorganising my fabric. Well, not exactly, but I took all of the fabric that was on the bookcase off and now wondering what would be the best way to put it back. Sorted by type? Sorted by colour?
How do you do yours?

Mine is done by color.

And since there's a lot of it and it's in drawers, I have split the colors into larger pieces and scraps (which are in strips or squares). In other words I have a large full drawer of purple-red-pink-orange and a smaller drawer with strips and squares in the same color. Same for blue-green and brown-natural-yellow and black-white-gray.

Are you a quilter?

I decided to show you what my ideal fabric stash would look like:
CRAFTY...Craft Room Envy / shelves

I have some more pics of fabric storage on my pinterest boards called craft room envy and crafty storage.

For almost 3 decades I had all my fabric stacked on 3 small shelves of my linen closet. Finally, last year, I measured the shelf spaces and got 6 storage totes with locking lids and now have my fabrics sorted by fiber content (felts and flannel, neutrals cottons, silks and novelty, etc). Love them, the shelves each hold 2 containers and everything stays neat and out of the dust. No more fabric falling on the floor and I take a container to a well lit area to find a fabric. The closet is at the end of the hall where it's quite dark.

I'm in the process of reorganizing my fabric and am going to do mine by color. Saw an idea on pinterest where the fabric was folded in half lengthwise and wrapped around cardboard to make "mini" bolts. I bought a set of adjustable metal shelving to put in a closet. The smaller pieces are going to be put in large ziploc bags by colors and hung on pants hangers. I think I'll put my fat quarters in plastic shoe boxes, also by color.

how neat is your fabric storage, most of them are sorted by color, with your showing,i think it the most useful method for fabric organization.

I just went to your pinterest boards and I feel a terrible stomach flu coming on -- so I can go home and tuck in and just explore! We're supposed to get snow tomorrow - I know what I'll be doing! I've been off the SCS boards for eons it seems and this is such a wonderful welcome back!

P.S. I AM a quilter! Fabric envy!
