You're actually not doing anything wrong. That is probably the file type they are. There are a few different free programs you can use. You can use Inkscape, GIMP, or Paint.net (windows only) to open up the image and then you can resize, recolour, and or edit the image with these programs. You can then save as another file type (eg jpg or png) that you can use in Word.
Irfanview is another good basic editing program that has opened every file type I've ever tried.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. I like that one too because it will give you thumbnails of just about every file type - windows doesn't - especially all my photoshop & psp brush files.
