Default Spellbinders decorative inserts

I seem to be missing something here! are these sets composed of separate dies and can these dies be used alone or do you also have to have the classic edges? If they are separate dies, do they actually cut the shaped edges they show? Help, before I waste yet more money!!

This is from the Spellbinders website:

Classic Decorative Inserts One feature three Spellbinders™ Edgeabilities die templates that cut, emboss, stencil and pierce decorative borders and edges. Each pattern repeats at one inch intervals. Combine Classic Decorative Inserts with Classic Edges to create custom border designs.

They coordinate beautifully with the edges and I love using them in those combinations. However, they can be used separately as well.
