Default TLC56 - Polished Stone

This week we will be doing Polished Stone. This is such an awesome technique.

Here are a few examples:
by hgrohs
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
by cobrielle:
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
by Crysta:
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Here is the link to Beate's tutorial
Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers

Here's what I shared with my stampers once upon a time:
Supplies:
 Glossy White cardstock
 Various colors of reinkers
Applicator (wood block (1"x3") with strip of the stiff side of Velcro glued on and a strip of felt)
Rubbing Alcohol -- 91% or 99% is best. 70% alcohol can be used, but the paper will curl.
Rubber gloves, if you dont like getting your fingers messy

Technique:
Saturate the felt strip with alcohol. Squeeze out excess alcohol. Lay strip onto wooden block and press to adhere the strip to the Velcro.
Apply a dime-sized amount of ink to the felt, and repeat with 1 or 2 more colors in a line along the applicator.
Pounce the applicator up and down all over the glossy side of the cardstock.
Thats it! Let dry for about 5 minutes, and then stamp as desired.

Tips:
When using metallic inks, be sure to seal the paper with a spray-on fixative. Otherwise, the metallic inks will smear. Also, when stamping on top of metallic polished stone cardstock, Staz-on works much better than Classic Inks.
Every piece will turn out different, even when the same colors are used. The effect varies due to the amount of alcohol on the felt, the amount of ink used, the relative proportions of colors of ink, the way you dabbed and pounced, and even the humidity of the day.
Instead of pouncing and dabbing, try smearing the ink on the cardstock in swoops and swirls for still another effect.
Cotton balls can be used instead of the wood block applicator but it messier, and rubber gloves are definitely recommended is a lot!

Some of My Favorite Color Combinations:
Creamy Caramel, Barely Banana and More Mustard
Forest Foliage, Close to Cocoa, Silver
Lovely Lilac, Tempting Turquoise, Brilliant Blue

Some color combinations to try:
1. Only Orange / Really Rust
2. Mint Melody / Garden Green / Goldrush (looks like real marble!)
3. Only Orange / Really Rust / Baroque Burgundy with Gold
4. More Mustard / Barely Banana / Gold (very nice)
5. Old Olive / Mellow Moss
6. Creamy Caramel / Close to Cocoa
7. Real Red / Summer Sun
8. Mauve Mist / Sage Shadow
9. Lavender Lace / Almost Amethyst / Platinum (very nice)
10. Summer Sun / Mellow Moss
11. Mauve Mist / Mellow Moss
12. Brocade Blue / Marvelous Magenta / Gold
13. Baroque Burgundy / Mauve Mist / Silver (beautiful!)
14. Forest Foliage / Creamy Caramel / Platinum (looks like real marble!)
15. Forest Foliage / Baroque Burgundy
16. Bliss Blue / Green Galore / YoYo Yellow
17. Night of Navy / Marvelous Magenta (this one is really dark)
18. YoYo Yellow / Tempting Turquoise
19. Real Red / Eggplant Envy (gorgeous)
20. Mellow Moss / Bliss Blue
21. Pretty in Pink / Going Gray / Silver (very nice)
22. Eggplant Envy / Real Red / Goldrush (gorgeous)
23. Summer Sun / Cameo Coral
24. Cameo Coral / Close to Cocoa / Black (goes well with Vintage stamps)
25. Lovely Lilac / Taken with Teal / Brilliant Blue
(This list of colors was copied from Sharon McCarys website: http://www.happystampin.com/colorcombo_polishstone.htm)

If you need to make a trip out to get the rubbing alcohol, be sure to get the 90% or higher. The 70% will work, but your paper will curl a lot more.

Another way to seal the metallic inks is to seal clear embossing powder...I haven't tried it, but I bet it looks really fabulous.

I can't wait to see what you all come up with this week.

Great challenge for me Beth...Thanks...I've been wanting to give this a try. I don't have several of the items needed...so if I have time to stop by the store, I'll get what I need...I may not have time to do this today, but I will get it done sometime this week, if not today. Thanks so much for doing these challenges...I just love them!

I just did this last week for the sketch card, my technique is a little different but the results are the same. I also don't have the correct gold pen. Such fun Beth!

Jeanne, it is a little early for drinkin'!

I LOVE Polished Stone... here are a few of my faves from my gallery (none of them have metallic, but that's because I'm to impatient to let it dry!):

When I have done this I have sealed with the cheap aerosol hair spray, the cheaper the better, just a real light coat on it, it seals the metallic ink, I have used the metallic reinkers that SU sells (encore) and they work great, used a Krylon pen before but the ink dries too quickly. I have also done this without the metallic ink in it and it looks great too! I have always only used a cotton ball to do this, but got gloves at the dollar store, and the work great for this!

Oh, I really like the idea of a wood block applicator. I have tons of velcro. I'll have to see if I have any white felt. If not, I may have to make a quick trip to JoAnn's.

For those who don't have metallic refills, I think you can dtp splotches of metallic ink from the pad onto your glossy cs first before you dab your colors & you will get the same effect. It's been so long since I've done this & I have a fading memory.

I finally tried this technique for January VSN, but with Alcohol Inks -- WAY easier, LOL! Here's the card I did then:

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

And I'll try to play some more today! For those of you going out to purchase supplies, Ranger (Tim Holtz/Adirondack) makes a little wooden applicator with the sticky stuff that holds on felt pads (and the pads & alcohol inks, if you want to "cheat" a little!). I've gotten them at my LSS and ReCollections. Not sure if other major craft stores carry them or not (I'm thinking maybe Michael's carries them, too). Thanks for the great challenge today, Beth!

I also just use a cotton ball, and it works beautifully. This is one of my very favorite techniques - looking forward to making a new card to submit for the challenge.

This looks like fun! I just saw someone demonstrate this at the LV Regional Conference. I don't think she used any metallic reinkers though. I don't have any either, but it seems like a lot of people have done it without them. I do like the idea of the weathered BG with metallic EP. I'll have to see if I can carve out some time to do this one! Thanks Beth!

P.S. When are we gonna stamp????

I'm waiting for it to dry. I have 3 fingers that are Orchid Opulence and one that is Tempting Turquoise (Thumb is a combo of both). At least I'll match my bowling ball tomorrow.

Barb, what liquid did you use with the PearlEx? I don't have metallic re-inkers and I was thinking of the PearlEx, but wasn't sure what to blend it with. Jerri

I want to play. Will try to get a card up here later. I have only done this technique once a while back. I can't wait to try again. Thanks for the color combos, Beth; that should help a lot!

I did this technique recently and used the metallic reinkers. As everyone said, it just does NOT dry and I sealed with with acrylic sealer. But I might've used too much, because THAT took forever to dry and stunk up our garage! Then when I stamped w/ StazOn, it was SO sticky that it didn't leave a nice impression.

I'm leaving the metallic inks out this time! <G>

Here it is with the PearlEx. Kinda cool. I used my heat gun to speed dry it.

Believe it or not I had some Ox Gall Liquid. I have no idea what it is other than for adding flow to watercolors. I really don't use it, but figured I give it a shot. I've mixed them with a little water before, but you still have to set it with acrylic or hairspray.

I like to use metallic paint pens -- all you have to do is dab a little in dots on the paper and the alcohol will blend them along with the reinkers.

This is one of my favorite techniques and will definitely be playing along!
