What "creative" ways have you used your stash to get yourself out of pickle?
It is back to school time here and last night one of the teachers said we needed 5 dividers for the binder. Well I have already done my school shopping so I just raided my stash. I had some goldish yellow Recollections cardstock that came in a pack, I hole punched them. Used some Georgia Pacific cardstock to make two inch long tabs (3in wide scored down the middle, rounded the folded edge, and secured to the gold sheets starting a half inch from the top of the first one and then at two inch intervals on each respective sheet). I don't think I will ever buy a divider again. I just wish I had a child that liked to stand out with quirky cute I have loads of designer cardstock I'm not feeling!
I know I'm not the first (or last) mom that will do this but how have you used your stash to get yourself out of a pickle?

My brain is slowly closing down for the night just now so can't think of any time when my craft stash helped me out of a pickle. I know that just recently I needed to cut some chicken wire to go around a plant that the darn rabbits keep eating and couldn't find the 'proper' wire cutters and had to use the ones in my beading supplies. Glossy accents have come to the rescue several times in a non crafting area - great for keeping a hem in place when there was no time to get needle and thread out!
Not so much "pickles", but dd regularly raids my stash for homework assignments.
If only she'd put everything back in my stamp area when she's done ...
I had to use the little hammer in the old SU! Crafter's Tool Kit to loosen the retainer holding my friend's spare tire up under her van. It was rusted on and wouldn't lower. That hammer did the trick. ;)

I also had to use my craft tweezers to get a label out of the spine cover (I had put the wrong one in).
DD has won some awards and gotten some outstanding grades on school projects over the years using stuff from my stash. She, too, would leave my area a mess when she was done! She's in college so maybe my stuff is "safe" now.;)
Back when my oldest son was in middle school, he misplaced the button covers for his tuxedo shirt which he needed for a band performance. Of course, he didn't know they were missing until he was ready to walk out the door! Mom to the rescue with black card stock, a small circle punch and some glue dots. His very picky band director didn't even notice the substitution.
My stash comes in handy all the time... I particularly love having the ability to make a quick gift look extra special by using all my paper goodies. I keep bags of Dove chocolate on hand as well as Ghiradelli squares. A cello bag filled with chocolates, some pretty paper & a lovely sentiment made into a tag & bag topper, and I have a nice little gift.
My neighbor's daughter had some oral surgery a couple of weeks ago. I took an empty vitamin bottle that I had washed & saved, covered it with pretty paper & embellies, and filled it with lollipops -- SO cute and so appreciated! Had I remembered, I would have probably picked the child up a book -- but I didn't remember and the lollipops were a huge hit... Love that!!

How the heck do you keep from eating all those Doves and Ghiradellis?? Chocolates don't last around here!!
Well, this isn't exactly raiding my stash, but once I needed a big envelope (9x12). Tore the place up looking for them, certain that I had some. Well, I didn't. So I got out a grocery paper bag, cut and folded it into the shape of an envelope and used the ATG gun on it. I made sure to buy some big envelopes later though, since I do prefer to use the paper bags for trash or recyclables.
I teach the little ones during Mass at our church and have more than once gotten a call at 7 am that the scheduled teacher couldn't make it. Having a stash is great, because it's easy to whip up a simple little craft. One of my favorites was to punch a wreath shape with a 2 and 2.5 inch circle punch, then a bunch of little flower shaped punches for the kids to make a little floral wreath ornament. I'm dealing with a 2 to 5 year old audience, so I ran the wreath shapes through the Xyron for easy sticking. It was near Mother's Day, so I used scraps of pastel card stock, but red, white and green at Christmas time would work too.

You've got that right! We usually purchase a couple of cases of cans of pure maple syrup in the spring. A little handstamped tag that says "You're So Sweet" makes a quick "Whoops, I forgot" gifty look so much nicer!
You'll love this - I have to make another set! One of the teachers didn't mention they wanted them in their class binder as well until we read through the syllabus.

I thought your kids were all done school? Or just the oldest?
My high school kids are on their own for school supplies. But they don't start school until Sept 4!

Just the eldest. I miss England where all I had to do was dress them (uniform) and pack their lunch. The teachers picked their supplies through the school, no worry about not getting supplies as everyone in the class would have the same. *sigh*
The university one is worse in a way. Besides kitting out the room have had to buy random school supplies so has it available with being so far away.

Don't American schools supply all these basic materials for school work? Are the schools hard up or something? So glad we don't have this here in the UK

I think the States is the same as Canada. The schools supply the textbooks. Students are expected to supply all the consumables ... paper, binders, pens, pencils, dividers, duotangs, markers, crayons ... the lists are sometimes very long and often very 'exacting' ... specific brands, etc.
And yes, the schools do not have the budget to cover these things. It's been quite a while since they were supplied.
But then, most schools (at least here) don't have uniforms.

Our school also has uniform (strict dress code to be exact but not that different to when they were in school in England).
And yes it actually all has to do with the schools being run by taxes i.e. the government and the supplies using capitalistic consumerism or it would need a government supplies contract bid etc. I mentioned this to a teacher once that I would have no problem paying the money to the school and the teacher bulk buying the "right" supplies but apparently that falls under the bid issue as well.:rolleyes:
