The project is very cute. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be practical for me. Some time ago, I hung my ribbon spools on dowel rods. It didn't take long to learn that it was not the right choice for me.

When I pulled on the ribbon for one spool, sometimes the spool next to it also turned, which made the ribbon unwind. And then ribbon exchanges and by the yard purchases meant that I had a ton of ribbon (and lace) that wasn't on spools.

I ended up going with the ribbon ring: Ribbon Storage Ribbon Organizer | Ribbon Ring
For a few metal rings and some pieces of plastic, it's way overpriced. But it works! It keeps my ribbon organized, easy to see and easy to access. And it's super easy to take to crops.

If you have the wall room to hang a frame like this, you might want to consider rain gutters mounted to the wall. I purchased an 8 foot length of gutter and four end caps at a home center and my husband cut it in half and mounted it to the wall for me. It is the perfect size for spools of ribbon to stand up in. I think this is a cool and trendy idea. I don't have a lot of ribbons, but I'm sure I'll find a way to utilize that concept.

I like the Michael's ribbon, wrap organizer in theory but the dowel rods bend and that would drive me nuts!

I saw the Ribbon-Ring storage method on a blog and I am going to try it. I love the fact that you can put the colours together however you want. Also I can hang it from the multiple door knobs that I have in my room or I was thinking of purchasing some vintage door knobs and hanging from them. I would like it to end up being decorative in my craft room as well as functional.

I saw another one very similar using the Jetmax Cubes 3 drawer with the drawer divider and using foamboard cut 2 x 3 wrapping the ribbon around and using a rubber band to hold it in place. I can not think of website. I myself just started converting to this system as well however I am using chipboard that I have and paperclips to hold it in place.

I found two huge clear glass Anchor Hocking cookie jars with lids (about $10/each) at Walmart. I wound all of my ribbon on the old fashioned type clothespins ... Sold colors in one jar and prints in the other. I can see what I've got and they look pretty.

I have had several methods of ribbon storage over the years but these are the ones I have come to love. The first is the white rain gutter system my husband put up for me and the second is the wooden clothes pin storage in the IKEA jars. Both work very well for me and are close to my work area. I also did some of the smaller pieces of sheer ribbon on the metal round clip. I have a file that cuts out the cardstock with the slits to hold them and I hang them off the pegboard on my revolving storage unit I got free at a convenience/gas station. I store loads of stuff on that, ex: Stickles, glues, chalks, hardware, tools, embossing folders, die cut folders, punches and the list goes on. The best part is it revolves next to my work station.

I wold think the dowels would sit too close to the wall for most of my ribbon spools. There would need to be an extension.

I tried putting my ribbon on a dowel a while ago and I found out quickly that I'm the type that likes to have the actual spool in front of me.

So a whole back I found this TUTORIAL that I really like! We're building our home right now so I get to plan my stamp room from the start and my DH is helping me to build a few like this. I can't wait!

I have done a cross between the ribbon ring and Amazing Paper Grace...I cut pieces of card or milk bottle, punch a hole in one short edge and wind the ribbon on, fix with a hair elastic and hang off the ring. It is getting a bit bulky though.

To create a copy of the ribbon ring tags, how about cutting a piece of milk/juice container into a rectangle, punching a hole and putting a couple of slits 3/4 of the way across to slide the ribbon into?

I did this with my ribbon too. The only thing I don't like about it is when I got to use it, the ribbon has folds in it and I'm kinda too lazy to iron it :(

I am redoing my craft room right now and had all of my ribbon on the ribbon organizer tags from the Ribbon Ring system. I had them hanging on little clips which were then hooked up to 1/2" book rings. The book rings hung off a tension rod just inside to the right of my reach-in closet. The system worked for over three years but with my new set-up, I want the ribbon front and center as I am now longer using the closet for craft storage or a workspace.

I am debating if I should continue with the Ribbon Ring organizing system or start from scratch with another system (like the one on Amazing Paper Grace). I am liking the idea of everything being neat, organized and compartmentalized. With the Ribbon Ring system, my only complaint was that I had to sometimes fuss with two other ribbons sometimes getting uneven while I was pulling one out for a card. And I'm a bit particular about keeping things precise so to see uneven lengths sometimes drove me nuts. LOL Otherwise, the system was great but I'm not sure it's the best one for me anymore... Decisions, decisions!!!

That is fantastic. My mom is a doll dress designer, and she has around 20 (no joke) large storage containers with ribbon stored this way. She's always wound her ribbons and lace on chipboard and stored by color.

I've been storing mine in clear jars, each ribbon in a little clear baggie. Not ideal, and when we finish the attic and I start from scratch with my craft room, I'll probably change it. But it works, for now.

I just bought two ribbon carousels from wwwribboncarousel.com They are really great and hold all my ribbon rolls as I usually buy my ribbon in bulk. It sits in my view now and I can figure out what color I need or even what color is inspiring me to work into a card.

I have a low rectangular wicker basket with a hinged lid. It's actually a picnic basket I re-purposed. I just keep the ribbon on the spool and neatly make rows. They are easy to get out and put away. The lid also has strong elastic that I think was for napkins or silverware. My ribbon from SU that is on long cards is just placed behind this elastic.
I love how quick and easy this method is.

This rectangular box system works so well for me I went out and bought a cool little suitcase type box from Hobby Lobby to put additional ribbon in.

The ones I have setup like Amazing Paper Grace, I used a bobby pin, (hadn't thought of a paper clip) I also wrote the Colour and ribbon type ( I am an SU hobby demo) also used the coordinating cardstock to wrap ribbon onto.

The ribbon on cardboard (ex ribbon originals) I have in old punch tins.
I also have some in a fishing tackle type box, but you would need a divider for each sample, cause the ribbon unravels onto the one beside it.
I have some in retired SU Ribbon holders, but since I love sorting them by colour, it is kind of annoying having ribbon spools different Sizes in each container (that is the circle size of cardboard ex cording small roll, grosgrain big roll).

One tip I found handy was if you have your ribbon still on the spool, cut a slice in the cardboard, slip the end of the ribbon in it so it doesnt unravel or get tangled on another roll, similiar to a spool of thread.


IF I only settle on one system, for me the ribbon has to be able to be removed from the container and without unrolling other ribbon.

I had this problem also and solved it by using stick pins to secure the ends of the ribbons. :cool:

I too started this way.. but O M G I am getting disappointed in just how long it is taking me to do this.. I am wondering did you find an easy/fast way to wrap them? I have SO much ribbon I'm ready to go and dump it at the goodwill!! lol but that is too much money to do that...

The one way that I found to wrap it was my husband & I came up with using the apple peeler corer slicer from pampered chef.. you know the three little prongs? well he drilled 3 holes in an end of a left over wooden block and so it wouldn't crack he wrapped 2 tie wraps on it.. and we put it on the prongs.. so with using foam board I could place it on the end.. it sounds awkward.. but it worked.. until the holes wore.. and the block kept falling off :(

I had my ribbon stored in several different ways through the years, but when I lost my dedicated crafting space, I realized my ribbon storage solution was taking up too much room. I knew I needed to rethink it and make changes.

One of my friends had her ribbon in ziplocs for a crop and I had the idea that this might work for me, since I had such a limited storage space. So I bought a $3 box of gallon-size Ziploc bags. Now I sort my ribbon loose, in the bags, by color family. I have 11 bags, one for each color of the rainbow (R-O-Y-G-B-I-V), plus three bags for neutrals (blacks/greys/silvers; whites/creams/beiges; tans/browns), and one for odds and ends.

My ribbon, floss and fiber has been sorted like this for over 4 years now, and I absolutely love it! It's inexpensive, easily portable, and doesn't take up much time at all to maintain!

I have to admit that at first I was worried about my ribbon getting all wrinkled and tangled in the bags, but it really doesn't. I just soft wind each ribbon around two fingers and place it down in the bag. After each use, I squeeze the air out of the bag, and the ribbon stays clean, fresh and in place.

I'm afraid I must have a ribbon obsession, and keeping all my rolls organized and viewable was driving me crazy! Fortunately, I saw an idea somewhere that lead me to plastic-covered wire wall organizers...usually used in kitchen pantries. I found mine at Lowe's. The large ones were $20, I think, and the smaller ones were $10 each. I loaded all my ribbon by colors and OMG, it's sooooo nice to see them out, to be able to match the ribbon with my project, yet they're all corralled in one place:

I also found some clips (I think at JoAnn's) that allow me to clip leftovers, or even project ideas, to the rack. This method has worked extremely well for me. Although it takes up an entire wall, it frees up my desk space, which is a premium, and keeps it out where I can see what my options are.

NOTE: We've moved since this photo was taken, and I've now got a third four-tier shelf, so all my ribbon is stored without the double-decker effect. Much easier!! =)
