What to use that looks & feels like sand

Hi,
My grandson takes his quad and goes to the sand dunes. I am making him a card with a quad on it but can't figure out what product to use that would mimic sand. Does anyone have any suggestions?:confused:

Sandpaper? Ya know, the stuff from the hardware store to sand down wood?

Would it sound dumb if I said "sand"? Clean sand will stick to double sided adhesive or a wet adhesive like Elmers (sample attached has sand stuck on with Glossy Accents). A child's play sand pit or a bag of builder's sand are not usually hard to find and you only need a spoonful. Just make sure it's dry before you work with it (I put mine on a bit of foil and put it in the oven for a while).

Otherwise I'd have said the same as Holly - a coarse sandpaper, maybe with a torn edge.

You can get craft sand at places like Michaels. I've used it on cards before and just applied it with wet glue and sprinkled it on. I wouldn't use beach sand or stuff from outside. It might have little critters that will die and then might smell.

Thank you for the replies. I knew about sandpaper, of course, but didn't want to use that. I will check out the craft sand at our Michaels, I didn't realize there was such a thing. I appreciate all your answers.

One slight caveat: if you use regular glue, don't make it too thick on the area; it will make the sand dry "wet" (dark) as opposed to dry/light. I used glue for larger areas, as the double-sided tape leaves a distinct line where it meets when placed side by side.

I'd advise against using any foodstuff on a card as it can be an invitation to rodents or other little critters to have a nibble - not a good ending to your creative hard work!

Thanks for the tip on the glue. Would a glue pen with a wide tip work for the sand?

I used those super small bead things that are with the glitter and flocking. I am not at home so I can't look. They may be called microbeads. I used mainly the 'sand' color but added a few black and clear as well. I used it with a LA LA LAND stamp so the faux sand was fine. If you were making a "nature" card it might not work as well.

I think so. I just know that too little and not only will the sand/glitter not stick, but it will look skimpy. Too much and it will be clumpy and dry dark.

I went to the trouble of getting some dirt from my yard, sifting it to get it as fine as possible (it was for a narrow band), heating in the oven to kill the cooties & critters, only to have most come off the double sided tape (it looked like a dusty strip):rolleyes:

I really didn't use a lot (maybe 1/8" high, spread around with my fingers)... but Geezy Wheezy! It acted like cement when dry (even though I smoothed it down). I'd say you'd need more than just smearing some glue with your finger, but not as much as comes out of the glue bottle top, if you were to make lines over the area and smooth it down a little. Does this make sense?

Another addendum: I'm sure you know that if you use regular craft glue, it will be wet and take awhile to dry. After smearing your glue and adding and tapping off the excess sand, lay the card flat, place a piece of copy paper over it and then lay something heavy on top (make sure that there are no wet spots of glue for the paper to get stuck). This will assure the card dries flat.

Just experiment on scrap paper that will be the size of the area you need for your card.

Thanks again for the great tips. I have a zig glue pen but I also bought a Martha Stewart gel adhesive with a circle tip, it doesn't work well at all, so I used my zig glue pen and it worked fine. I also tap the sand down with my finger after I put it on and that helped it stay on after it dried.

There is a sand color Ultra Fine Flower Soft that looks like real sand when applied to a card or scrapbook page. It's applied with glue. Hope this helps.

IF you just want a sand look & NO REAL TEXTURE, I use the SU spritzer tool! It gives a textured look; I used tan colored paper & a Creamy Caramel marker!

I bought a 1 1/2 lb. jar; it's just called Sand at Hobby Lobby for $1.99.
It's very fine sand and works great on cards of which I use...Zip Dry paper glue or I'm sure you could also use double sided sticky tape.

jodaisy, I too use Flower Soft Ultrafine 'Sand' which I got from Our Daily Bread designs ..........HERE is a card I made for my DH for our 20th Anniversary using the Flower Soft.

I also have embossing powder that mimics sand, which I bought at JoAnn's many years ago....I'm sure you could do a search and find it. If all else fails, you could use a course sponge and ink to create a sandy look. Good luck!!

If you actually want the 3D effect of sand - Flower Soft's Ultrafine 'Sand' is the easiest way to go. Looks identical and doesn't have the weight of 'real' sand. I love the product.

I have used the Mudd Puddles on a lot of projects and it is great to work with. It dries with as much texture as you want. I did not have a problem with the paper curling up while drying. When I bought it several years ago they had about 5 or 6 different types of sand to choose from. The kids loved putting it on a page for their scrapbook

I love this product tho I think Mudd Puddles is the manufacturer. I have Malibu and one other sand colour and mine has no shell bits in it though you can also purchase jars of shel bits and whole shells. So easy to use, almost no mess! You apply it with a small trowel or Popsicle stick. Only caution: If you don't use it often, add water every few months or it will dry out.*

If you mix sand with paint you literally get stucco (that's what the painters do on houses); so you can do the same for your card houses (either card fronts or house boxes).:cool:

Thank you all for your help. I ended up going to Michaels and getting the craft sand and glueing it on. I couldn't find a good applicator for glue so I used my Zig glue pen and it worked pretty good. I got more glue than I wanted on in some places but they thought it was great because it looked like sand dunes. I'm not sure about it but had to get the card done. :o
I'm going to attempt to send a pic of it so hope it works. Anyway, he was really impressed:o

Nice job! It looks like sand or dirt, which is great for off road depiction.

We made a lot of sand jars using salt mixed with dry tempera paint. You can also use finely ground chalk (use coarse sandpaper, and color with chalk to grind it), but will get lighter colors.

I love mudd puddles and it worked wonderful, now the problem is I only used 1/4 of the jar, when I went to use it again it was hard as a rock, anyone have any input in how to soften it? The jar was closed tight. thank you
