Default Anyone else not get Washi tape?

Is it just me?? I don't get the big deal over washi tape. Maybe it's that I have about a bazillion pounds of paper in my house and could just cut a strip of dsp and get similar look...

Help me to see why I need this stuff.. I don't want to be the only weirdo not using washi tape LOL..

It's not just you, I don't quite get it either. It is cute stuff, I won't argue that - but as you said, I'd be just as likely to cut a strip of paper myself.

I guess if you were using it for various other things too, that requires actual *tape* (wrapping gifts & such), it might be worth buying it. There's the convenience, I suppose, of not having to cut paper & put adhesive on it.... but still.... For me, personally, there are way too many other goodies I want, that I can't see spending the money on the washi tape.

LOL - if you're a "weirdo" for not using the "latest hottest" item - then I must be the queen of all weirdos. I've rarely "followed trends", or been the type that just HAD to run out & get something, just because it was the "hot thing to use" at the time. I like what I like, and that's what I stick with. I like looking around for new stuff & if some new thing really catches my attention, I'll happily try it, but only because it genuinely appeals to me, not because it's "the popular to do".

But then... *shrug*... I guess I always have been a bit weird anyway LOL!

Not just you, I don't get it or need it either and usually cut my patterned paper into strips too. But I'm not really into trends except for embossing folders and dies - but that's a different story!

Like Ravyn, I like what I like and don't necessarily embrace all the trends but this one really just escapes me. I'm curious to see what I'm missing ... gotta be something because people seem to love it :-)

Default For the longest time I didn't get it either until now...

Hi ladies, for the longest time I didn't get it either, - what is the purpose of washi tape - at least until now that is...

Yesterday I made a set of Kimono shaped party invitations and had a difficult time gluing a contrasting cardstock on the neckline and down the front edges because the paper is so stiff. But today seeing this thread made a lightbulb go on - what if I used washi tape instead... it already has adhesive and a pretty pattern. But most of all - it is flexible - making it easier to get around those angles.

Yay - now I want to buy some!

I lived in japan for 4 years and have a ton of it. Of course, it was (and still is) way more popular there than it is here. I have about 30+ rolls I got before I left in 2010.

What I love about it...i can make a card in 5 minutes. Super easy, fun way to give a card a little bit of texture and punch with really no effort!

With that said, I don't tend to ever jump on a bandwagon! There are lots of things that were the 'it' thing I never bought...and have not missed! Use what you have...that is the important thing in my eye!

I guess throw me in with the weirdo who doesn't really get into crafting trends. I do like Washi Tape. I don't own any, ROFL! I make my own. I get a kick out of the trends. I remember Washi Tape in the 1980's when I was a young girl shopping at the Hello Kitty store. I had a ton of it back then. This geek Kawaii girl always gets so excited when she sees Kawaii washi tape.

The greatest technique the other day with Washi Tape. You can put Washi Tape around a wooden embroidery hoop to really jazz it up: Good Egg Embroidery Hoop - featuring Elmer's products - MASTER CRAFTSTERS. I thought that was brilliant for those into Hoopla art.

Well, I don't really get Washi Tape's appeal either. It is just sticky-backed strips of coloured paper essentially, isn't it! I can appreciate the look of cards using tape with ripped edges (like masking tape), but it's a messy style that just isn't what I'd make.

Plus, in Australia, the tape I've seen is pretty expensive, so I'm not even tempted! Hooray!!!

I don't get it either. I can see why some people do, but I haven't found the appeal of it for me. And can I just say I also don't get:
chevrons
glitter
and what is the flippin' big deal going on with mustaches?

I had some and never really used it. Then I started SMASHing and can't live with out it. For quick easy layouts and actually taping other elements down on the page in a cute way, it is genius!

I get Washi tape - just don't use it, because I am on an "austerity plan" (i.e. no crafting purchases) right now. I like the look of the translucence of it, but I can easily accomplish that with a patterned vellum paper, or if I don't mind a more opaque look, will just go for a strip of dp.

However, I do like the convenience of it - just rip it off like tape (can also cut it if you don't like the ragged edge).

I don't personally see the need to get any washi tape either. I don't use the million yards of ribbon I have now, I have enough patterned paper to start my own store, and I mostly make one-layer cards now anyway!

I am a HUGE fan of washi tape so I'll try to explain the appeal for me !

What's funny is that about 30 seconds before seeing this thread, I bookmarked a site that has some on sale for a week and would love to get it. I have just about all of the A Muse Studio washi tape already.

First, it's repositionable so that's nice. It stays put once it's pressed down snug and after a period of time, but as you place it, you have a lot of flexibility. And you can also just tear it with your fingers. Not a big deal but that's nice. Also, you can just trim it off right at the edge of your cardstock, which is especially nice for a one-layer card, or whenever your design doesn't have a good panel to wrap ribbon around.

The other thing is that it is not completely solid - at least most of the ones I have. The metallic ones, like silver and gold, are less transparent. But I love that you can usually see through it a bit. Sometimes it changes the patterned paper or stamped pattern underneath just enough to take on a whole new look but still is 'tied in.'

Also, a lot of them have a unique sheen to them - it's hard to describe but there's a very fine 'texture' and interest to the surface.

It serves a similar purpose as a band of ribbon or a strip of cardstock, but it's just a lighter touch especially for more clean and simple designs.

I had been using much less ribbon on my cards already when I purchased washi tape the first time and I was thrilled that I could use a similiar design element without the bulk. I guess part of it is that I like the neatness of it.

Like so many other products in this hobby ~ some will like it, some won't ;^) . I know what attracts me to washi tape has nothing to do with trend, but rather the qualities of it that I just love. I can't imagine not having it as an option!

I don't have any but I always like the cards I see made with it. The most recent blog entries I've seen using some are at Julie Ebersole's blog here: Paper Trufflez

She is the "queen" of Washi tape IMO...scroll down to the entries from 4/17, 4/18 and 4/20. Julie loves this stuff; and not only uses it for decorative purposes on the front of her cards but often, if you watch any of her videos, she will use small pieces of it to hold a die in place before running it through her die cutting machine. Washi being repostionable is very useful in that context. If you've never checked out her blog...go take a peek!

I'll never get it-figuratively and literally-because the stores in my area will never get around to ordering any of it.

I posted this link yesterday in another thread, to Dawn McVey's blog. You can see some examples of how to use washi tape there. Also, Target has cute washi tape for only $4 for 4 different rolls. Dawn has pics of the tape on her blog:

My Favorite Things: A Few of My Favorite Things...the next edition

I got some and plan to give it a try as I've never used it before.

I don't have any yet but I want some, I like the "sheerness" (is that a word? LOL) of it, it has a look similar to vellum but with lots of fun prints, I'd say its very different look wise then just using strips of colored paper IMO.

I'll have to leave my opinion until I actually see some in person - used on a project. I have so much stuff that I really don't even want to know about anything else. :(

Michaels has washi tape now if anyone wants to check it out. Their Recollections brand. They call it craft tape.

I may just go to check out Michael's washi tape ... or is that like opening Pandora's box LOL? Just what I need is another addiction. My friend called today to ask if I had any navy ribbon .. I asked "what width, material, sheen, opacity"? I might have a problem...

I was going to say Michael's shouldn't be too big a problem since they almost never have anything new and I had to troll the clearance eisle yesterday to find something to buy other than one roll of washi tape and some SMASH stuff...but they do always have a HUGE selection of ribbon. You may be asking for trouble if you can't stay out of the ribbon section.;)
