I use an embossing tool to curl the petals in flower making. However, I wondered if anybody had created a tool for that purpose that clamps on to the end of the petal, then can be released after the curling has been completed. Picture a mini version of a curling iron.
Archivers sells a petal curling tool, but it is a round topped embossing stick. You roll it over the petal on a cushy surface and the petals curl. I think they have a video on their website.
I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere a person using tweezers to clamp the petal and hold it while curling. These were the straight, very pointed tweezers, such as what stamp collectors might use (i.e., not the type with the slanted ends you'd use for your brows).
I myself have used a slotted quilling tool when working with very small petals.
Where can I get a quilling tool? Does Michael's, AC Moore or JoAnn's sell them? I have asked at JoAnn's here but they don't sell them from what the sales girl told me.

I just bought mine at Ben Franklins. I am pretty sure you could also get at Michael's but I haven't looked since I found mine already.
I have also used the end of a large darning needle with a big eye. You know what they say , "necessity is the mother of invention" lol
Oh! Good Idea! ;) I agree with you on this one!
I would also suggest putting on a rubber thimble or two or put on a latex or rubber glove on your twirling hand to help grip the needle.
Thanks for posting the info on that hybrid petal roller, Mary Ann. A few days ago, I posted directions for making baby roses from Nesties scalloped ovals, and I used a bamboo skewer to roll them. The slotted end of that Imaginisce tool would probably work great for that, and the ball end would curl the petals and shape the leaves. I'll check to see whether my LSS carries it.
Thanks! I added that Imaginisce tool to my Buy/Wish list. Hope the size of the slot works for a variety of flower designs.
I bought this tool today. I was using a heavier paper and my quilling tool slot wasn't working for me. This works great! Not sure if I will use the ball end, but just having the longer handle and the larger slot is great!
Could you find a doll curling iron? You could borrow (steal) one from a toybox. I collect dolls and I am always using their little accessories in my crafting project. You won't believe the treasure trove you can find with dolling accessories.

that's what I've been using but just ordered a flower tool kit from atjoansgardens.com can't wait to get it and get busy. e

I ended up ordering that one right after she posted her video. Can't wait to get it.
Recieved it today & I LOVE it!!! I have 100 flower roses to roll (whenever I get the time) for a Topiary that I'm making for my bedroom. I rolled 2 & love the ease of this tool...sooo much better than rolling with the end of a thin paint brush & faster too! I have so much to do first so the topiary is last on my to-do list, I'm hoping to have it done by May the latest. I want to add it as part of my Spring home decor after I get around to doing my spring cleaning.

I notice some commenters on here who have slot tools whose slots won't accomodate some papers. To those folks: Do you mean you're finding that the slot is too narrow for the thickness of paper?

I ended up ordering the hybrid petal roller on eBay. My LSS, Archiver's, and Archiver's Annex were all out of stock. That always happens when a product is recommended on these forums. ;)

Yes, for me, the slot in the tool of a quilling tool is too narrow for my thicker paper. I bought the pink petal roller. Is there a difference between the petal roller and the hybrid petal roller?

I wondered the same thing. On the Imaginisce site, the Paper Petal Roller says "Sold out--see Hybrid Petal Roller Tool". The Hybrid Petal Roller says "works for both fabric and paper." I wonder if the company is no longer making the original tool since they now have the fabric flowers.
I just found this thread and after reading through it was wondering the same - what is the difference between a petal roller and a hybrid petal roller? Anyone know?
Coronado Island Stamps sells a metal clamp in their "Bloomers" tool collection that works great to hold onto the start or bottom of your rolled flower. Anyone with a medical background will recognize it as a hemostat:
