Hi there! I am having one heck of a time with ribbon these days! I put up a curtain rod in my space and it holds lots of ribbon. Only problem is that when I go to grab one, the ones near it start spinning and before you know it, I am not crafting anymore but now spending my time rolling it back onto the roll! How do you keep that from happening?? I thought about getting little binder clips and clipping in between each one so that they are a little more stable but I don't know if that will do the trick. Any suggestions? Thanks!

how about getting pins (I like the ones with the round colored heads) and pinning the ends into the roll, then when you are ready for a color just take out the pin and cut your ribbon. I would keep a piece of foam or small magnet on the wall to keep the pin so you dont' lose it.
I find pins leave rust marks. Tape leaves residue.
paperclips might help but might cause a wrinkle.
Two things I can think of are using double sided velcro strips wrapped around or cutting a slit in the rolls and passing the end through to lock it off, like a cotton reel.

Well, I got some of the small binder clips and they work great. Problem is that they take up lots of room...for each roll, a binder clip on each side takes up about 3 rolls worth of space. For now, this is fine because I only have probably 8 rolls of ribbon, but as I get more, I am going to have to come up with something new. I have this vision in my mind of little clear plastic clippy looking things that I have seen somewhere but I don't know what they are or what they are used for. I will have to start going through my husbands tool dresser to find what they are!

If you get brass pins or stainless steel pins, they won't leave rust marks.
I paperclip my ribbon to the tagboard circle, right on the edge. It doesn't leave a crease at all. The only problem is the cheapo rolls don't have room to fasten a paperclip to.
If I was using a rod like you are doing, I would probably use the pins. But I'd get a good quality fine pin from the sewing department, not from general crafts.
I had the same problem! I had my spools on dowels in a plastic box. I moved them to larger dowels that I hung across pegboard hangars. I couldn't come up with a solution to fix the problem. I also didn't want to go with one of those ribbon totes with the holes. They are cute, but I kept watching people fight tangles. I ended up putting my spools (overflow ribbon) in drawers and anything three yards or shorter went on a Ribbon Ring.
I love the Ribbon Ring--even though I think it's completely overpriced for a few large O-rings and bunch of pieces of flimsy plastic. I have a lot more ribbon than plastic pieces. Even as frugal (cheap) as I am, I will soon break down and order more.
Every solution for ribbon storage I've seen previously took up too much space and/or required expensive "stuff" or had some other setback to it, so I ended up dong what you see in the attached thumbnail. Before I did my "color drawers", I had the same concept going, but the ribbons were in clamshell cases like the SU wood-mounted sets come in. If I'd seen Becca Feeken's solution before I'd already done this, I'd have followed her lead, for sure!
I followed Becca's blog and I did the same thing to my ribbon. I now have over 200 rolls of ribbon stored in an 9x9x9ish ---three-drawer plastic cabinet. So much simpler and I purchased a travel flat iron from the drugstore to iron any wrinkles out as I use the ribbon.

Stupid question--what kind of curtain rod did you use? I love the idea...I have it on a dowel rod right now and it's kinda messy and the rod is not standing up to the weight of the ribbon and I'd love an idea to replace it
Have you considered switching to a different style of ribbon holder? I did the rod style for a while but, like you, was having trouble with it.
I posted a picture on another ribbon organizer thread that is made out of wood and has shelves with small lips to prevent the ribbon from falling off. This way I can take the spool out, use it, and easily put it back!
I think I do like Becca's system! I just showed it to my husband, I think it will save me some trouble. I could swap out my current curtain rod for something sturdier and put my punches on it! Thanks for the tips!

I have done the dowel then curtain rod now I use rain gutters screw onto wall that way when i run out of a robbon I dont have to take them all off to remove the empty roll in the middle  and for my yard ribbon that is not on a roll i attach each to a safty pin and put them on a large ring and hang out in the open so i can see it and use it
I was fortunate enough to have gotton a few of the Clip It Up Ribbon Organizer when Scrapbook.com had them on sale for $9.99 during this last holiday season. I haven't put them up yet though....LOL!!
Not sure if this will help with your situation as I'm having a hard time picturing the curtain rod deal...but these clips are plastic, so it won't leave marks:
I also have used the Cropper Hopper Embellishment boxes to store my "designer" ribbon that I only have 2-4 yards of....The end of the ribbon hangs out of the box so that you can see what ribbon it is.

I do pin down the ends. Use stainless steel pins so they will not rust
I can totally sympathize with the spinning dowel and piles of ribbon on the floor, ha ha;)
I have my ribbon on 2 curtain rods (the dowel style that you can expand by twisting it) and I use pins to hold my ribbon ends in place. Just for the reason you named....when I would unspool one, the one or two next to it would start to unspool and it drove me crazy! LOL
I was also going to suggest using a rubber band on the roll -- I would get the big wide ones so they wouldn't leave a mark. I ended up taking most of my ribbon off the rolls and used the ribbon ring system. Those are now attached to a wire dress form -- she has quite the colorful skirt!
