I've seen several posts where forum members are seeking Stampin Up "old style" punches. I'm curious, why do members prefer the old over the new? Do they cut differently? Is it because the older ones are more comfortable to hold? Other reasons?
My guess is that they want the stamp shape and SU has retired it - for example, a friend of mine really wanted the little punch that punches out a half moon shape - I think it was called a slip punch? Anyway, SU retired it. She ended up getting it on EBAY.

My thought was the trouble many people have had with the quality of the new punches. I sure hope mine hold up well. I'd be really upset if they stopped working.

Alli, I think you might be right. I did some checking and it seems that Stampin' Up had loads of problems with its new punches. Supposedly, those being sold now are okay, but I'd be leery of buying a "new" punch second-hand for fear it may be one of the early problem punches.
I love the new style, especially the storage factor. I know there have been issues with them, but I have been lucky and had absolutely no problems....probably just jinxed myself.

Me too! I love the old style punches better than the new ones. I've already pinched my fingers in the new style punches and so did one of my customers (during one of my card classes).
I think the newer punches are heavier. I have mixed feelings about the new style. Sometimes it is harder to use them flipped over depending on the image. Have difficulty holding the paper to save against wasting. Just got the XL full heart and the stocking ones and they both cut nice and clean. Have had problems with some other new ones with partial fuzzy edges. Can't really complain because it's not that bad. I can trim the fuzz with scissors but it bothers me. (Just me!)

For all the better storage ability and larger shape options of the new punches, I too prefer the old ones. They are more comfortable to use and seem more "ergonomic" with no pinching issues. Plus I've had a couple of the new style ones jam or the spring mechanism has broken.
I didn't say that the punches were having problems, just that some older people have trouble using the newer ones. Some older people have weak, arthritic hands which make it difficult for them to use so the older punches are easier for them to use. I agree, Bahb, that SU punches are better than some of the less expensive ones that are out there.

I've read where people have pinched their chest or stomachs with the new punches. I had this happen at my last workshop. A good friend gave herself a mammogram! Ouch...so it does happen!
I lean toward liking the older style better also.

Wow -- I hope I'm not jinxing myself but I haven't had any problems with SU punches, old or new. I hope mine continue to perform well! I don't favor the old over the new style - they both work equally as well for me. I haven't given myself a mammogram but I think that says something about my physique!
I seriously was ready to sell all my old style punches that are available in the new style just for the storage factor. I use rails on the end of my scrapping island, and the new ones look nicer stacked in a rack...I thought.
However after using both, I really prefer the old style. I am not a fan of the extra step to unlock the punch, and I find it harder to hold onto when I flip it over for accurate punching around something.
Now what I really dislike, is having two areas for different styles of punch storage...I forget what I have when it's not all in once place.

I like the new style for storage purposes, but that's about it. I really prefer using the old style ones, I've had the closing mechanism jam on me a couple times and it wasn't easy to get apart.
I just got the lace ribbon border punch yesterday and it's the first time I've ever had any trouble with an SU punch. My demo did tell me to use it on scratch paper a few times and it does seem to be getting better, but I had a lot of trouble getting my paper out of the punch. Finally, the last page I punched up came out perfect, but I did really have to wiggle the punch a couple times. But it sure beats a couple Martha Stewart border punches I have, I can only use cheap, thin cardstock in those.

For me I love the old style but they are just such a pain to store... I have no wall space... I have had 2 of the older style punches break on me... the snowflake punch seems to be the one I have issues with now in the old style.
I love how the new style can stack and take up much less room!
I find the new style a bit harder to line up when you stamp first, like with the dec label punch. I figured out if I half pushed it down, then got the paper into final position, it worked better. If you just line it up and punch, the paper moves.

This is my guess too, I have a couple of the new design and the paper seems to slip out of the punch easy. The new ones store well, but I prefer that old style to the new.
I do not have a problem storing the new because I have cheap towel bars I purchased to hang on the wall in my craftroom and it works and looks great!
I'm not sure I have a preference. All my basic shapes are in the old style but the unique shapes are in the new style. I'm not old but I do have a bit of arthritis already and I actually find the new style easier to use. I tend to grip them between my fingers and palm to squeeze and to me it requires less effort. I like that with the new style you can punch while holding it in your hand, you can punch with it right-side-up on the table, or you can punch (most of them) with it upsidedown on the table. You can't do that with the old style.

Mine, old and new, are stuffed in a drawer. Sick of struggling and I want to layer them too so I now turn my stamp images into cut files with Make-the-Cut. I cut the pieces then stamp while they are still on the mat.

Been trying to find a "V" shape plastic piece that the old style SU/EK Success punches used to make a corner design. When it was removed, you could use the punch repeatedly to make a border. Thy used to come with every such punch you bought, but were interchangeable, so you really only needed one. So I gave all mine away but one and now I have broken that one. Anyone who still uses the old punches and has extra of the "V" shaped pieces you would like to sell, just let me know. I'm getting desperate!!!
