Default Want to learn card design / composition

Hello -

I have been "following along" in making cards for 10 years now, but every time I try to make a card on my own - it just plain stinks! the colors are wrong, no balance - embellishments are either over board or too weak! ARGH!! You'd think after 10 years, I'd have figured some of this out!

Is there a course or instruction book I can buy?? Any sort of classes to look for? Can my local demonstrators help me?

I have ALL the necessary materials, just can't "do" anything with them on my own!

Advice please.

TYVVVVVM!!

I think we are most critical of our own designs. It seems I get the most compliments on ones I question. Do you play along with challenges? They are fun to play with and give the card some structure.

Hi and welcome from New Zealand! I get books and magazines on card making out of the library and I get inspiration from the cards that appeal to me. I don't design my own cards from scratch (wouldn't know where to start!) but I use a design I like and allow myself some lea-way with the actual stamps and embellishments I use. So don't be too hard on yourself. Keep tweaking a design until you are happy with it - move things around until you are happy with the balance. Don't be too quick to glue things down!

Hi and welcome! I'd start by just picking something you like from the gallery and copying the design and adding your own stamps and details. I learn the most when I start out to recreate something beautiful!

Cindy - Thanks, I am my own worst critic! My cards seem so very plain & childish - I will play along with a challenge or two!

Stephanie - designing from scratch is what I'd really like to learn more about - don't know where to start, though.

Hi Lydia - the gallery is a great place to start, thanks very much!

Keep the tips, ideas & advice coming!

Some people discuss the thinking behind the design of a card and make reference to the basic design principles (rule of thirds etc) when they post on their blogs. Susan (LateBlossom here on SCS) springs to mind as somebody who often talks about the design process and is willing to share cards that didn't succeed as well as those that did (sometimes even showing how applying a simple change to the former turned it into the latter). She's a clean and simple stamper which is a great place to start even if it's not your natural style as there's nowhere to hide with a CAS card! You can find her blog here.

Thanks, Joanne! It's funny, but the blog post I just put up shows TWO failures and then the success. Yikes, sometimes it takes a while to get there....

To the OP...most of what I learned about design I picked up from Cathy Zielski's scrapbook design books, wiggydl's blog, an online class with Julie Ebersole, lots of copying of cards I liked (including some of Joanne's amazing creations!), and simple trial and error. Every card I make (good, bad, or in-between) teaches me something, and my style is very simple, very clean and minimalist. I'm in awe of stampers who can make a ten-layer card look perfectly balanced, harmonious, and beautiful.

I show some of my mistakes on my blog because seeing the before and after is sometimes more helpful than anything else in illustrating a point.

In the end, though, there are lots of ways to learn design, but the main point of stamping--unless you want to be a pro--is just to have fun. At least, that's my opinion!;)

Joanne - Thanks much for the links & advice. Very helpful..I really want to improve my card building skills, I am too basic...

Susan - Thank you for the names & reference! Great info! I have always been afraid to "waste" perfectly good paper - guess I need t get over it & start playing!

Thanks to each of you!
