Default Tell me your money saving tips that ended up costing you more LOL

I am always falling for these money saving ideas that end up costing me more in the long run I loved the idea of making my own stamp cleaner but by the time I bought all the ingredients it cost me twice as much. Of course
i can make a ton of the stuff, but i don't think it works as well as SU or stazon. So i ended up buying the stamp cleaners anyway:rolleyes:

Becoming a Stampin' Up! demo. I told DH I would never buy a store card again...that being a demo would save us money.
I still spend the same amount or more than I did before I became a demo and maybe I don't save any money but at least I get more for what I do spend ;-)

LOL! I can't remember where I first heard it but one of my favorites is:
Why spend $3.00 on a card when you can spend $300.00 and make your own card....

'Stamping is cheaper than therapy'

Stocking up on paper when it is on sale will save me a bundle later! Right! You have to use that paper before the next sale that will save you a bundle! LOL

Buy large paper stacks! Recently, I needed an black ink cartridge for my printer. I am standing in the ink aisle looking at how much my color ink is going to cost to replace it when her time's up. I realized I could buy two DCWV paper packs on sale for the same price as an ink cartridge. If I buy the printer ink I can make my own paper and probably save money in the process too. I won't have to store the paper packs. I hardly use the paper stacks in the first place.

Granted, when I bought the packs I shared them with my Mom and her friends. I want to make my own paper.

Buying cheaper tools so I could try them out and upgrade later to better quality. I do this with a lot of things in my home. This idea works out great. Most of the time my cheaper ideas fit the bill. Cheaper idea if upgraded can be given a new home.

Crafting tools this rule does not apply. Injuries, broken tools and frustration is not worth it. Now, I save and purchase the best. That's the old adage spend money to save money comes into play.

Most of my frugal ideas work out great.

Just last weekend, I drove all over the region looking for an item so that I wouldn't have to pay shipping for it by buying online, I don't usually fall for that faulty logic, but I was CERTAIN that some store in the area carried it. Came home with unintended purchases and an empty tank of gas and STILL have to order that darned stuff online!

Not stamping related, but...

...planting a vegetable garden. After buying the tomato cages, soil amenders, plants, seeds, and fertilizers, not to mention all the watering, I would have saved money if I'd just bought at the farmer's market once a week.

Note to self<---I will not succomb to this temptation when spring comes!

...buying something because it's such a great price. If I don't need it and will never use it, then I paid too much!

I was raised to be frugal, but I never bought the "you'll save money in the long run if you make your own cards" line my first SU demo used. I do this because I enjoy it, not to save money.

My favorite is my father's idea that driving out of your way to save a penny a gallon on gas is somehow saving money. Sometimes he visits me in NJ (from PA) just because he wants to fill his tank.

Making my own stamp spots. I just bought plastic bead canisters and a cut and dry ink pad to make my own blank ink spots-they didn't come out too good so now I still have to buy some online.

Pretty much everything listed, LOL!

Our Hallmark closed and I thought I'd make my own cards rather than finding a new Hallmark store to save money. It's been fun, though!

Any ad that encourages you to "spend more and save more' with a discount. That annoys me and I don't fall for it. No: if I spend $50 extra dollars I just spend $50 extra dollars. That is not saving no matter how I look at it. Where do they come up with that logic? I guess some people just don't think it through and the marketing stragtegy works.

I tend to be pretty frugal... cheap even. I got a cheap pair of winter boots in November and are they ever cheap. I should have just bought good ones and they would have lasted me at least a couple more winters. I don't spend much on myself. And I guess sometimes it shows.

You know I burst out laughing in my local Newsagent last week when I was looking at stamping magazines because on the front cover of one it had:

"Make your own cards and save money"!

And you know, when I first started cardmaking, that was my intention......ummm, well, hmmmm........;) Now I just make cards 'cos it's fun!

I told my husband almost 6 years ago that if I signed up as an SU demo, I would never need to buy anything after the $300 starter kit. I think most quarters I have made my own $300 minimum...

I come from a family of crafter's. I knew when I got into paper crafting this wasn't going to be a frugal hobby, lol. I remember standing in the stamping aisle at Hobby Lobby with my little shopping basket to put stamps in. My DH kept handing me stamps. He's a really big enabler. All stamps were 40% then. I was like "These are really expensive! This isn't going to be a cheap hobby!" I kept telling my DH to put stamps back and I will go draw it at home. These two stamping ladies in the aisle with me were in hysterics. I will never forget it.

You know having that mindset I have some really cool stamps now and hardly any mistakes.

Yep, just like a water heater, you need a pressure relief valve to keep the whole thing from exploding and turning into a rocket. Sometimes even a $3 pack of bling keeps me in line. (Last spring I put myself on a spending diet to save money for a stamp convention in early June. When I went to that convention, I bought stuff that I'm still not entirely sure why I thought I needed it.)

Figuring the cost of a garment on a cost-per-worn basis. When I was a poor student I spent $2.00 on a little jacket at a thrift store. Later when I was able to shop at regular stores and figured purchases on a cost per worn basis, I thought about that jacket and how many timea I'd worn it. Theoretically I made thousands on it. But somehow I never saw that money! Needless to say I don't figure my clothing budget on that basis anymore.

Buy 3, get 1 free at Bath and Bodyworks! I sometimes really only need 1, but I never pass up a multiples deal!

I also always make sure my SU! orders are more than $100 so I get a better deal on shipping. Or other places, I'll meet the minimum order for free shipping.

I also pay by credit card for everything. I'm obsessed with collecting AirMiles! That can add up when you just whip your card out without thinking!

Yep. I never realized just how much stuff I "needed" until I started looking at all the beautiful galleries!
