Trivet Sealer????

I'm sure I had read somewhere - but now can't find it - that there is a sealant you can buy to use with Trivets that is heat resistant. I think it was from Walmart and the name was like a lady's name - Maybe Nancy something????. when i read it i had thought i would just go search for it but i live quite a ways from wal-mart or any other shopping place and my husband is going on a tool shopping thing with his buddies.. I can have him pick it up if i know the name but he will not be impressed with my vague description and will never find it.

How long do you need to let the sealant dry before moving on to the next step? How many coats do you use for your final seal?

Hi there-
My mom is doing trivets for Christmas so I told her to get this spray. She called from WalMart to ask about it and she said that it was the blue label one but it said not to use or store around heat. To us putting a hot pan on it goes against the warning label. Does all of your guys spray say that also or are we looking at the wrong stuff? Thanks for any advice!

I'm not at home to be able to check my label, but that is probably correct. The problem with using the spray (actually spraying it) or storing the can neat heat is that the can is pressurized so that it can spray... and the stuff under pressure is flamable. I would think that once it is sprayed onto something and dries that it isn't a problem to have heat near it. Maybe I'll try calling the manufacturer to ask though... just to be sure since I'm planning to use it on some trivets myeself as well.

Uggh. I just called the manufacturer, and I was wrong. We should NOT use acrylic spray (of any type or brand) for this project. She said it's a common question this time of year, but the acrylic spray isn't good because with heat (a hot mug or a hot pan) the acrylic gets soft... and the thing that you've set on top of the trivet/coaster is abrasive against it and will just scratch off your design and the acrylic.

What a bummer... I don't know what I'll do now. Maybe just do the heat bake and not seal for the trivets. Any other suggestions???

Thanks so much for calling!! I need suggestions now also! Would it work to stamp in Craft ink and then heat set it only? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

good question - I have only done the 4X4 tumbled tiels and the smaller 2X2 shiny ceramic tiles...

You could use Staz-on and sharpies and bake - I use my coasters to put my hot mugs on but I haven't ever tried placing a pot on them since they are so small 4x4...

You could try staz-on and sharpies - I don't know if craft would work.

I did a trivet over a year ago and I've had no issues using it. It hasn't stained, burned, scratched, NOTHING. If you are using thin coats it won't heat up enough to do anything. A hot pot or spoon has never done anything to my tiles. It truly amazes me the different answers you get from different people.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Sharpies won't work with the stamp sets we are using so it looks like we will be trying it with the craft ink. I think I will also try with the sealer since Kymbers has had such good luck. Thanks again!
