coloring digis -copics

sometimes when I color my digis w/ copics the image smears why?

I either heat set the ink, or let the image sit for a day or so before coloring with the copics, or it does bleed. Have you tried using a heat gun on the image to help "set" the ink?

Thank you for the suggestion Craftysister! I will try heat setting the image before coloring-hopefully that'll resolve the problem.

You can also try changing your print options to print on "best" or "photo". If you have newer printer with a separate photo black ink cartridge, this will make the printer use the photo ink rather than the regular black ink. Sometimes the different ink doesn't smear when using copics.

If those things don't work, you can take in your printed images to an office supply store and get photocopies.. those are laser copies and the ink won't smear.

I use an old HP Laser printer and I have no issues at all with printing and coloring digis.

I've let mine sit for, oh say a month, AFTER heat setting and it still smears. I haven't had a chance to go to Staples to get a photocopy done. I am not really close to Staples. I have a whole stack of printed digis that I can't use.

You can still use them and colour with pencil crayons and oms if you have them. You could also watercolour them, but I would go light with the water if they're on regular cardstock.

actually I guess I should have said that. I didn't try the copics because I was using prismacolor colored pencils and OMS and that smeared. I was scared to try the copics after that

I would try your copics. It may not smear. If you have a yellow copic, try that one. It seems for some reason that yellow will smear more than the other colours. You never know... Its worth a try. You could be colouring away to your hearts content.

I tried coloring with the copics and it smeared. I did order new paper today so I'll try that too. I was using PTI and now I am going to try Cryogen from paper temptress.

It is always my yellows!

Thanks for the suggestions. I am in the market for a new printer, does anyone have any suggestions on ink and paper that doesn't smear with Copics.

I have an HP all in one 6500 and I use Hammermill Color Copy Digital paper. I have no problems with bleeding and the Copics color/blend beautifully on this paper.

Here is the only digi I have done so far. Look at some of the tiny spots I had to color on the foliage and rope. Absolutely no bleeding . Plus the blending worked perfectly on all of it
As you can see the bonnet is yellow and the baby bottle is white so any bleeding would have been apparent.

I have an injket printer and I don't have any problem with smearing. I just let my paper sit for about 10 minutes before I start coloring with copics; I don't heat set. Maybe the problem you're having isn't your printer at all but the paper you're using?

I use either Cryogen White (you can buy it through papertemptress.com) or GinaK's Pure Luxury Cardstock 120# (buy it through her website)...depending on the image and the number of layers of color and amount of blending I'll be doing. Cryogen can withstand a LOT more coloring and manipulation than GinaK. And both of these papers go through the printer beautifully.
