Default scrap work table

Hi Scrapbook friends,
Need some help with ideas about a scrap work table. I was lucky enough to take over my son's room as my very own scrap room! It's painted now (bubblegum pink!) and am looking for the right sized work table. I'm thinking possibly something about 40" by 50" and am having a hard time finding a surface that size. Need help from all the scrap girls!

This table gets my vote!

Sewing Tables : Hayneedle - Shop at Hayneedle

I don't have enough space in my room to open both leaves -- but one is plenty!! And then I can fold it down when I need to use the space for something else, like a guest room, and it rolls right out the way.

The drawer is really deep and long -- I keep a lot in there, and there is a shelf underneath.

The table opens and folds closed easily and was easy to assemble.

It is tall -- perfect for when you want to stamp standing up. And then I also have a drafting chair that I can adjust to any height. And I can lower the drafting chair enough to slip it under the table if I'm not using it.

I ordered mine from Hayneedle (the store I linked). I couldn't be happier!

Hope you find what you're looking for :^) .

Have you checked your local second hand stores? That is a common dining room table size so maybe you could get a cheap one and paint it.

I got my table at Kmart. it was back in the camping section, there is no middle seam where it folds, it's about 5-6 ft long. I love it!! And it was under $40.

Thanks for the ideas! Checked out the table link - looks very versatile as you can adjust the size. And I shall check out the second hand stores - I'm not afraid to paint! I live in Canada and we don't have K-Mart stores anymore but I will check out the camping sections. Definitely need a table without seams. Thanks girls!

this is the table I bought for myself. Hubby works with blue prints a lot, so I thought he could make use of it too.

Amazon.com: Studio Designs Vision Craft Station ( Silver/Blue Glass) 10053: Office Products

I also went with glass b/c I figured I might be able to use it as a "light box." My idea is to twist the gooseneck lamp under the glass. I haven't tried it yet, so I don't know if it will work. just a thought.

You can always check a home improvement store; do you have Home Depot or something similar in Canada? I'm thinking you might find some counter top pieces left over from bigger jobs in their "bargain" bins. Then you can just mount it on a wall or on top of sets of shelves or drawers if that suits you better.

I use the BJURSTA dining table from IKEA. It's got two leaves that slide out from the ends. With the leaves in, it's about 35" square. With both leaves extended, the table is about 50" long. Of course, it's never the small size. I use every single inch.

I got mine from a Linens N Things that was closing. It is a square approx. 4'x4', adjustable height and on wheels so I can move into the light or other work area. Works great for my basement space. Love it.

I use our old kitchen table. Its the perfect size and I didn't have to pay for it (was my hubby's before we met). Its just a plain rectange, unfinished wood table. Fits perfectly under the window so I can look out on the nice days while I work.

Default table

My husband built my table using plywood and wood beams. He had them already so it didn't cost anything. He painted it white. I love it. He even cut a hole in it for my scraps and hung a trash can below it for me. It is not fancy but knowing he made it for me means the world to me. It is the place I feel most connected to him since he passed away.

Ohhhhhh I have often longed for a hole in my table for trash. It's so nice you have something so special and meaningful for you and especially something that you use so regularly.

You might want to take a look at your local Craigslist. You can find all sorts of tables & desks there for decent prices. I found an old drafting table on Craigslist for $50. It weighs a TON, & wasn't fun getting it down into the basement, but I love it! I can raise & lower the surface (& tilt) if I ever want to start stamping while standing. I've got the pencil tray along the front. (Though I do occasionally need to pull the tools out & vacuum out all the little paper bits.:p)

My cousin was moving several years ago and she was going to throw away her oak table and chairs set - I called her and took it off her hands - it is great - seats 6 comfortably 6 if need be! Free is always great - but i bet you would be able to find something that you could use at a yard sale, moving or garage sale - Craigs list too! Good luck!

I think you have some great suggestions here. I will just say after going to a scrapbooking retreat, they had tables that folded up- plastic tops, you know the ones I am talking about. I hated those tables. They had to much bounce in them to get my brad setter to work, I ended up having to put it on the floor to punch my hole. A good solid wood table works best!!!

I have a piece of countertop sitting on three 36" high bookcases (one at each end and one in the middle, but set to the very back of the countertop). I had it made for a very reasonable cost, and it is 6.5 feet long and 32" deep. You can often find standard depth countertops already made. I like the option of standing so mine is tall enough for that and I have a swivel bar stool for sitting.

I too have a very large table made from old hollow-core doors. We had to be very frugal when putting my room together and my DH cut two doors down to about 3/4 the origianl length and mounted the rough end to the wall and then built me legs. Perfect for me and my daughter or anyone else who wants to come create with me -- very large and very affordable. We happend to have a bunch of doors from when they replaced them all at my husband's work with fancier ones, so they were free but I have seen a TON of them at the ReStore Habitat for Humanity Stores very cheap also. Also the door handle holes are perfect for putting the cord to the power strip that sits on the top of my desk down through to the outlet. My desk is about 5 foot square.

Default large table

I went to the local lumber store and got a piece of plywood 4x8...had it cut in half and secured sets of table legs to them. They can be folded up and moved if I need them to be, and there are 2 for easy moving (couldnt get a whole sheet up my stairs) Sometimes you can find the legs at a thrift store, the lumber yard, or someone throwing out an old table..you just need the folding legs.

My work table is from Ikea. It's not as wide as you mentioned, but this thing is 6 feet long and I love it! The price was a lot less in the *stratch and dent* section too. I hung a bag at the end so I can just push the scraps right into the trash. LOL --- and no, my room is not always this tidy - I did a major clean-up and snapped the photo. The table was back to the usual mess just a day later. LOL

my work space is from Ikea, I like to stand when I stamp so I use a Kitchen work space counter. I also have a desk from ikea that I use for the computer. it is lower, it is cheap from ikea. I use two saw horse-like things that are set to the lowest so it can tilt or be set higher.
I am posting pics but I want everyone to ignore the mess (please)

SuG - I like that nice hefty counter! I like to stand also most of the time. I forgot to mention for the original poster- my favorite part of my work table is that I can pull out the drawers from BOTH sides of the table - very handy. Ikea is a great source for selection if you are lucky enough to have one within driving distance. Don't forget to check out those garage sales this time of year. You never know what you might find. Good luck!

Moonpie..."bling epicenter"......I love it!

And I love your table. It is beautiful and functional. I would have a hard time collecting too much "stuff" on the top. I would probably be forced to keep it clean...Just like you!

I use hollow core luan doors for my workspace. I put them up on bookshelves and under the table I can store carts full of supplies. They are light and very sturdy! I also put two doors over my pool table (I am a basement crafter) when I need more room like when frends come to craft!

Yard Sale!!!! I found a 1930's metal table with leaves on each side that easily fold up if I don't need them. Because I'm fond of it, I've covered it with a vinyl tablecloth for when I'm working to protect it. I love it! Perfect size--about 40x50 with both leaves out-and just the perfect heighth so I don't have to hurt my back scrunching over!

Hubby assembled a very functional and fairly inexpensive work station that sits in the center of my room and includes a ton of storage space. We bought 8 Jet Max Cubes from ACM & Michaels (on sale or with coupons). They are stacked two high at the four corners and form the base for the table. Does that make any sense? Then he had a sheet of melamine (~$30) cut to the size we wanted at Home Depot or Lowes. You can get some sort of finishing to go on any raw edges. And then we attached the melamine to the cubes with industrial strength velcro. It is very sturdy, but if the tabletop gets messed up over time, we can remove it and replace with the other half of the melamine. Then in the cubes on either side of my legs, I keep my most used products/tools (in the top two are my idea books, scor pal, white card stock, pages in progress, i-rock, cropadile, various adhesives, clear blocks for my stamps, and stamp cleaner. Then in the 4 drawer cubes that are on the bottom, I have small embellishments separated by color - so one has pinks, one has reds & oranges, etc.) Good luck! I'm sure you will love whatever you choose!

Freecycle! My craft room is almost totally furnished with free stuff - apart from a lovely dining table which we bought from ebay for 99p ($1.60) I love not having to worry about damaging expensive stuff and also love keeping stuff out of landfill. I have a few photos on my blog (which unfortunately I can't link to yet :( ) which were taken when the room was new and not as 'busy' (for 'busy' read total mess!!!) as it is now.

I have three kitchen tables, one in my kitchen and two in my upstairs that I use to scrap on. I got one from my niece when she got a new one (it's a small one with "wings" on each end which I'm actually going to put in the kitchen as the one in there is a bit big) and one from a friend who was moving and one from a garage sale my sister found for me when I was moving back to Michigan. The one I paid for was $30 with 6 chairs (and it's quite nice) and the other two of course were free.

My DBinL left a bunch of tool cabinets in my basement when I bought their house and since it's been 7 years and he hasn't moved them out yet I'm planning on moving my craft room to the basement and cleaning out and using the tool cabinets to hold my supplies

They look great! But, that space is WAY too neat and tidy!

Default Tables

When we got a "new" dining room table (our neighbors were getting rid of it), I got the old one. It is metal, not sure if it has a leaf or not. I found a drafting table for my brother at the thrift shop. It is not very big, but folds so the top is parallel to the legs, so it doesn't take up much room. I usually stamp on the dining room table. I use an extra-large format magazine under what I'm stamping, coloring, etc. to keep it from getting dirty and/or getting rough spots in the coloring. This strategy might help for tables with cracks from folding or leaves as well.

My scrapbook table it a door, actually 2 doors. I love it! I bought 4 cheap laminate white bookcases at B** L***. We put 2 hollow core doors (the flat cheap ones) on top. It is great for standing and I have tons of storage space underneath. I use a tall drafting office chair to sit in. You could also use a bar stool. I love it! It is always completely covered with STUFF!

Default cutting table turned stamping center

A few years back, after the youngest finally moved off to college by DH decided that I needed my own sewing center. We found a great tall cutting table at Joann's with a cupboard area on one side, 4 or 5 drawers on the other and two leaves that flip up or down on sale for *gasp* $50! We brought it home, I assembled it, and one week later I discovered STAMPING! The rest is history. Only one drawer holds sewing para/para - oh what the heck, sewing stuff and the cupboard section holds the machine when not in use. I can spread out all over the thing or fold it up if I must make room for the extra twin bed in my craft room. I can stand or sit on a counter sized 'bar' chair. And two people can work at it if necessary. What a deal!
