Un-mounting stamps, what do you use to remove the glue from the rubber?
Hello fellow stampers! I know that I just read this recently but can't seem to find the the thread on this.
I have now decided to un-mount the rest of my stamps (mostly SU) down to the bare rubber. (Can't believe that I'm actually doing this but I'm glad I am!!!) I have a set where the glue from the foam is on the rubber. I remember reading not to use goo-gone, but can't seem to remember what I can use.
I also have some stamps that are non SU with black foam and can't even get that stuff to budge!!

Believe it or not I had the easiest time using the freezer method. I took it to the extreme though and instead of putting the stamps in the freezer for a little while, I left them overnight. They came off fairly easy once you get one part of the stamp lifted. Other people also mentioned putting them in the microwave I think for about 20 seconds. Then if it's still difficult you just keep putting the stamp back in for short periods of time until you can get it off the wood. I also used a butter knife to get the stamp to lift and found it a handy tool. Good luck.
I just finished unmounting all of mine (all SU!) and had no problem just rubbing the excess glue off with my thumb. Sometimes the rubber would come off and leave a thin layer of grey foam but that rubbed off with my thumb too. Thumbs of steel, I have.
I tired the microwave but the freezer worked better for me and you just have to use your thumb and rub! I did almost 350 sets and it was sooooo worth it!

I love the freezer method. With some of them the stamps came off so easily. I didn't have to work on them at all. I think the older ones were the stamps that required a little work. I found the longer they were in the freezer the easier they came off. One night my husband opened the freezer and all along the shelf there were stamps. He asked me what the heck are stamps doing in the freezer - lol.
For the really stubborn foam (non-SU stamps), I've used UnDu, even though I figured it wasn't the best thing for the stamps.It was just so easy to get that nasty foam to come loose with it, and I had a bowl of warm soapy water that the stamp went straight into as soon as the foam was removed, and the rubber came out just fine. I wouldn't let your stamps soak in it or anything, but it worked like a charm on some that I had already tried microwaving and freezing without any results.
If you use the microwave, start with 5-10 seconds at a time. In my experience, the wood gets hot fast. Don't want you to have to call the fire department and have to explain that you were just trying to unmount some rubber stamps! lol
Haven't tried the freezer but just might with some foam backed stamps that get ink on the 'open' area and ruin the stamped image. Will cut away the excess rubber before attaching to Tack ' n Peel (?).
When using the microwave, I seem to have better luck if I stick a mug of water in with the stamps - it seems to keep the wood from getting so very hot, and the humidity seems to help the adhesive let loose a little better.
Wow!! You people are the best!! I guess I should of mentioned that I did put my stamps in the microwave to do this!

Also looks like I will have to give my thumbs a work out!
Half of my stamps are still on the foam with A.T.I.O.O. and I think eventually I will finish those off to the bare rubber as well. (This is how I first started my un-mounting process. Never realized really how many different ways you can do it!!) So much easier I think to have them down to the rubber and use the tack n peel on the blocks.)

I just removed some rubber stamps from blocks using the freezer method. I put them into the freezer overnight and they came off the blocks and left the rubber foam on the block. The only problem was there was a layer of glue on the back of the rubber still. I tried cleaning it off using Dawn liquid soap but it was still there. I then dried the stamps and began picking at the glue and slowly at first I got a small area clean of glue. I then rubbed my thumb over the glue and it began to peel back, albeit in clumps and slowly. I now have all the stamps done except one which is being very stubborn. This particular stamp was glued with the rubber directly to the wood... no foamy layer. I’ll keep trying on this one.

I just tackled this last week when I needed to replace the EZ-Mount backing on a cling stamp. I used 91% rubbing alcohol first, but it was still taking more effort than I cared for. I switched to rubbing the back with Goo Gone .... shazam! (Pssst! Let it lay on the glue for a minute.)
Since I used alcohol and orange oil on the rubber, I just followed up with a quick bath of Dawn & warm water for rubber kindness. ;)
Thank you for your quick reply. I ended up letting them dry totally then with my husband's help we rubbed the glue layer off with our thumbs...not sure how good that was for the side of the thumb ... but it worked. I read somewhere not to use Goo Gone... but they didn't state a reason???

I'm sure that's possible, but I've used Goo Gone in the studio for years. And, I gave the rubber a bath afterward so new EZ-Mount & stamping could commence. ;)
